Fun build, nifty mechanics
on December 26, 2021

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed building this together. There's definitely a few tricky sections in the build, but we didn't experience any traumatizing moments as reported by some of the other reviewers. We're both very impressed with the mechanics for the sliding door and the pop top, however, the front doors could probably use a top hinge to be more secure. The finished camper looks great next to its red predecessor. Overall, it was an awesome purchase! Highly recommend!

Great Product

I do not understand why people are having such a hard time building this Lego set. I am 10 years old and love building Legos with my dad. This was one of many sets we have built together and I was a little nervous at first because of the negative reviews. However, I had a lot of fun building this Volkswagen van and will proudly display it with my other Lego Volkswagen Bus and Bug.

Worst lego set ever
on August 22, 2022

Very disappointing experience. Definitely the worst lego set I have every build. The set fall apart so my times. I considered myself an experience builder, having built lego sets for 15+ years including a lot of 18+ sets from the past two years. Beyond disappointed!

Excellent, well-engineered display set
on August 26, 2021

Volkswagen Van is an excellent display piece, packed with details. It's also entertaining to build - every Lego piece is functional, no silly fillers.
External details, such as handles or rear-view mirrors, are more than appropriately attached for an 18+ set.
Kudos for the engineering work that went into optimizing the Volkswagen Van set. I can imagine the Lego folks had as much fun designing the final experience, as I had actually experiencing it.

Not top tier, but not awful

Like others have said, this build was okay at times, but frustrating at others. Mostly, the issue was with the hatch back. That is so delicate, that it made the subsequent steps nearly impossible. I ended up taking it off until the very end when the pop-up top component was ready to be installed.

Not what I expected

I bought one for myself and my 15 year old son, it was his birthday, and we build together when we can. I have been building since I was 3. Some of the reviews refer to difficulty with the front falling apart. I see where they were coming from, but I've had builds before where I had to be careful, until there there were more pieces to strengthen the model. Once those pieces are on, the front is very stable. I almost didn't buy this set, and warned my son about the low rating. He really wanted it, and convinced me to get it as well. He had no trouble with building the front, and he has a condition called 'dyspraxia'. Lego actually went a long way to help him overcome some of this condition when he was very young. He wanted to build so badly, despite the trouble he was having. By the time he was 8 he built the creator Ferrari, entirely by himself, it was a 9+ set. I know that it is just a suggested age, but for him it was a huge milestone. He later built the creator James Bond car, which has some very complex mechanisms. We had great time building this set. On a side note, I happened to own a '72 T2 VW Kombi bus. It was fun, but cold in the winter, and could reach speeds of 65 mph, with my foot to the floor, and a good tailwind.

Beautiful to look at but not a joy to build
on August 30, 2021

I've never reviewed a set before-- maybe I should make a point to come praise the many I love-- but this set inspired me to do so.
I first have to say how much I love the look of this model once it's finished. I opted not to add the flower power stickers and think it looks great that way. It's much bigger than I expected and looks lovely on the shelf, especially next to the T1 and my other cars. The inside is not as interesting as I'd have expected based on the T1, and some details, like the curtains, seem undersized and don't stand out like they could.
I was skeptical of all the reviews I read that took issue with the build-- I feel like I always have a tougher time with vehicles and assume many others do as well, so I took them with a grain of salt.
But it turns out they were right.
The build was fine a lot of the time, but really became frustrating as it progressed. The build steps aren't always logical, which happens often enough that I'm used to it. (Like asking us to add a 1x1 plate to the back of a longer plate after it's already on and there's little room to work, even though it could have been added at an earlier point.) This model has more of that than usual. And this model is pretty fragile during the build. It's necessary to turn it and lift it often, but that's a danger zone. You breathe on it wrong and things come apart. The build sequence often means you're putting pressure on points that either aren't ready for that or never were going to be. Adding one element dislodges another. Sometimes elements feel superfluous (e.g. near the windscreen) and keep falling off when the next piece is added-- I even had to shake some dislodged bits out of the model and ultimately opted to leave them out because it took me long enough to figure out where to put them back that I concluded they weren't necessary. The sliding door instruction wasn't intuitive and the pop top doesn't sit flush as it should. Even once I was finished, tiles and plates were coming up at spots when I know for certain I'd placed them snugly and correctly.
I'm not new to LEGO. I've been building since the early 80s, have built my own original models for years, and really do love a good challenge with cool techniques and surprises. But this model ended up being less fun to build than I'd hoped. I hate to think what a first-time builder would have gone through in trying it.
I do recommend it for those who love VW, Creator vehicles, and just plain nice display pieces. But it for sure is a build that's not so much tricky as flawed and that can be frustrating.
I don't mean to bash the designers-- they did a great job bringing the shape to life-- but this one just doesn't hit it out of the park, unfortunately.

Took me 14 hours and it was a great experience!

I had not played LEGO for over 20 years.  Recently saw TV show LEGO masters and got interested in trying again.  Super thankful for all the other reviews pointing out potential challenges with this build because I got careful with those steps/areas.  My lessons learned: I took my time, just a few hours a day over five days so that I would not lose my focus; (2) I made about 10 small mistakes, and almost all of them were from not paying attention to pieces that must go in a certain way; (3) Bag #9 was the most tedious for me because as many reviewers already said, the front of the van was flimsy and fragile, so instead of pushing hard for the pieces to go together, I switched to tapping gently for the pieces to become attached to the main part of the van; and (4) the instructions did not show the best angle to assemble the pieces to the body of the van, especially toward the end, and I needed to figure out how to hold or move the body of the van by only the sturdy parts (i.e., typically avoid holding the van or applying pressure to the front and the back of the van).  Overall, while I am not at all an experienced LEGO builder, I think because I am typically detail-oriented and careful with handling fragile items, this model came together perfectly at the end.  I do not have any gaps between the roof and the van, and the parts that could move seem to be functioning as intended.  It was the building experience I was hoping to have!
