Unstable

Worst Lego set ever. Designed for someone with 4 hands. Unstable. Even when instructions are followed, roof doesn't close correctly.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great VW Van

This was a very good build. I liked it a lot. the front end was a little loose but I figured a way to get everything connected. to those having the roof gap issue look at step 496 where you are installing the roof especially the two green arrows at the front of the top. These two gray connectors have to pushed in all the way at the top of the cab to get the top to install all the way and not leave a gap. Once again a great build that I recommend.

Love this Build… with a little tweaking

I was really excited when this set showed up earlier than expected! It was such a fun and involved build. I’m an avid tent camper and I was at a gathering last year where a few folks were actually driving these vans. I always appreciate when LEGO showcases the outdoor community!
Things I loved: 1. Attention to detail of a Camper Van experience: the fridge; propane cupboard; engine housing… building that blew my mind! 2. Aesthetic was perfect! That “Taking-it-easy” Sky Blue really drew me to this product along with the sleek look of the Studs on the Outside style. 3. I love the juxtaposition of tech and creative building (this is my first build like this). I liked the “form and function” approach of this build.
Where some tweaks could happen: 1. I was surprised that the driver and passenger doors didn’t have and anchoring at the top hinge. They open and close beautifully, but it seems in any, as a builder, there would be something securing the top hinge.
2. The trunk (boot) is really hard to open. I rebuilt it twice to ensure I had all the bricks in place. Just seems clunky.
3. The sliding door is a bit clunky, as it doesn’t close cleanly. Once it’s in its bay, it’s flush, but it seems there could’ve been one more reinforcement to remedy this.
Again, thanks for this iconic build! I am no engineer, nor do I plan to be! Just wanted give my feedback on a fun and worthwhile build! Enjoy 2022, Everyone!

Nice Set

I’ve been building LEGO sets since the mid-eighties. I paid extra special attention to the piece placement in this set to try to avoid the issues others complained about with the roof. I did not have issues with that particular element but overall I found the set frustrating because it did want to fall apart when I tried to attach the windshield section and I had to rebuild that a couple times. I can’t get the engine compartment to open without force. In the end I got it together, just don’t breathe on it! It really does look stunning on a shelf and I love the little folding chairs and all the tiny little details with the fridge and the folding seat/bed. I would recommend this with reservations. I wouldn’t have someone buy this for their first ever build.

So close to amazing

TLDR: Fun build, beautiful car, would recommend for more advanced builders. My only gripes with the build were purely aesthetic and not due to any fatal flaws with design or construction.
Before buying the camper van, I was a little apprehensive given the widely varying experiences when it came to the build, with many complaining that the design was flimsy, unbuildable, or flawed. While not perfect, I will say I had no problems with the actual construction of the van. I felt like, if you took your time and followed the instructions provided, you would end up with a successful build. Nowhere along the way did any parts break off, or things end up terribly misaligned, and if you've built a LEGO technic before, this building experience should be a breeze. I think the final product is really fun and beautiful and an excellent addition to my display :)
Now for the drawbacks. While my complaints are few and far between, my one gripe was with the roof. The way the roof is designed, there is a long technic piece obstructing the full closure of the roof (as many in other reviews have described). It's a little annoying and could have been prevented easily with some Q&A. However, the actual fix for it is quite simple. There are two 7-hole blue technic pieces at the back of the roof construction that with the design outlined in the instructions obstruct the closure and cause the roof to bend if you force it flat. However, if these pieces are replaced with 5-hole long pieces, the roof will close without a problem. I feel like this was definitely an oversight on LEGO's part, but it's an easy fix if you have spare pieces from other sets you can take from. If you don't, the biggest downside is that the roof won't fully close, which is far from a drawback. I've included a picture of the section I'm referring to and how the piece replacement now allows the roof to lay flat.
