I like the portability

I like that this pump comes with a nice bag to carry it in and it is super portable. the rechargeable batter lasts longer than batteries with my old pump and I can pump anywhere with this model. Its nice an quiet.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This pump is amazing! I’ve had other pumps before and I don’t think none of them have been able to do what the Sonata does, the pump itself is heavy but luckily I don’t really take it places since I mostly use it at home. The battery does last me about 4-5 pumps before I have to charge it which is nice! I also do love that I can easily pause my session and then continue on with a simple push of a button! This is great for moms who are mostly home I feel like and have time to sit and pump or moms that need a more durable pump, definitely worth the money!
I would recommend this to a friend!

By far my favorite medela breast pump and I have 3 different ones. The suction is perfect and it’s super quiet.

Sonata Worries

I am a labor and delivery nurse. I drive an hour and 20 minutes one way to work was hoping to use this pump on my drive. I have not yet gone back to work so I haven't had a chance to test out how well the battery charge works yet, but will start trying it out with a charge without being plugged into the wall to see how long the battery holds up. After reading the reviews about the battery not holding a charge well I am worried I will not actually be able to use it the way I intended to for my drives into and from work.
Also the LED screen numbers only light up part of the numbers at times with the screen aleady not working well on day two of using this pump I'm worried what else will not work well?
Also can you tell me is there a car adapter available for this pump so that I can plug it into the car for if or when the charged battery stops working? I have milk supply issues and I can't risk not getting my milk out on time I am really counting on being able to use this pump primarily in the car and need to know I will be able to rely on it.

Pumping in direct sunlight or extreme low light may impact the display brightness and legibility. If you are pumping in either of these environments we recommended you use the Pumping Screen, on the MyMedela® app, to assist in reading your current breast pump session settings and time. Our Sonata battery will offer you approximately 1 hour of pumping time. We do not recommend pumping while driving as this could pose a safety risk. There is not currently a vehicle adapter option for the Sonata Breast Pump, but we appreciate you sharing this feedback. Your reference number is 208828 should you have any questions.

Poor design and function

I bought this because of the portability factor, but the battery life lasts for only 2.5 sessions and there is no option for charging on the go. It has to be plugged into an outlet to charge. Less expensive pumps by Medela CAN be charged in the car, so that has been a big pain and disappointment.
Since this is the only electric pump I've ever owned, I'm not sure if others are the same, but the milk storage bottles, while attached to the pump parts, spill SO easily. The bottom of the bottles are rounded, making them tip at a sneeze. Plus, if they somehow get knocked over while still attached to everything, milk spills all over. In other words, there's no seal to protect the milk supply.
This pump was really expensive and I don't think I'd buy it again if I had the choice.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Battery and suction issues

I can't recommend this pump to anyone. I love the look and features of the whole set. It worked great at first, until I tried using it without it being plugged in. It is always fully charged, but cuts off in less than 5 minutes. Sometimes, it won't even turn on if it's not plugged in. Now, the suction is not what it used to be. Wish I could get a replacement, but somehow my pregnant brain lost the receipt. Pump has only been used a few months and I'm pretty sure it's about to die on me. Guess I'm just stuck with it.

Do not purchase if needed for more than 1 year

I bought this pump after my first child and it worked great, I had a few minor issues but overall was happy with it. Great suction, the ability to be portable was awesome! I was hoping with the hefty price tag (insurance didn't cover) it would last more than one child. However it did not, and the warranty does not cover past one year so now I am stuck having to purchase an entirely new pump. Extremely disappointed because the pump worked great... until it didn't and conveniently was no longer under warrantee. My pump needs a new battery all other aspects work, but there is no option to replace without purchasing an entirely new pump.

The best???

The Sonata is my second Medela pump. I used a Pump in Style Advanced for my first two babes and it wasn’t going to make it through nursing a third. The Sonata is supposed to be the best option out there, and it’s good, but it’s not amazing.
It is quiet. It does make cute little music noises (you can turn them off). You don’t need a car adapter or a battery adapter - the battery is built in, which makes it easier to pump without needing a power source. It is powerful. It does come with the cutest bag that Mandela offers. I have not had to replace any membranes (I had to keep spares on hand with the Pump in Style.)
It’s got BlueTooth so your phone or device can sync with your pump. I think that’s overkill, and possibly a way for Medela to just collect data on how many times a Mom pumps, how long she pumps, and perhaps her output.
It is NOT a closed system. It does have terribly heavy breast attachments: I literally feel as if I have five pound weights hanging from each boob. The breast attachments have pop on lids that are very difficult to remove: I feel as if I’m going to dislocate my thumb at the base joint every time I clean them!
The pump bag only comes in black. There is only one option for the pump bag. The pump bag holds the pump, the parts and the cooler bag - and, if you’re lucky, a pair of earbuds. That’s it.
I honestly wish I’d tried a friend’s closed system Spectra S2 before I’d spent the money on the Sonata. I think it would have worked just as well for 1/2 the cost.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
