Efficient little pump

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I consider myself somewhat of a pumping expert - I nursed and pumped for baby #1 until he turned 1, and I am on the same track for baby #2 who is 8 months. This is my first Madela, and I liked it, but it left me wanting more.
I consider myself somewhat of a pumping expert - I nursed and pumped for baby #1 until he turned 1, and I am on the same track for baby #2 who is 8 months. This is my first Madela, and I liked it, but there's some room for improvement.
Here's what I liked - -The pump is super small and easily portable & it comes with it's own cute bag & cooler, icepack and extra storage bottles which is awesome -Built with a closed system (I had never tried a Madela pump previously bc older versions had open system) -VERY efficient - I was impressed with the output. Equivalent to my other hospital grade pump. -The flanges are very comfortable. There's a rubber/flexible rim so that it lays more comfortable on the breast -Assembly and cleaning of the pumps was easy -The vibration used is pretty comfortable -I liked the automatic settings, it takes the guesswork out of it. You get 5 min for letdown before it moves to the next setting automatically which mimics baby's natural sucking pattern -Madela seems to do a nice job of creating a community and offering resources for their nursing/pumping mamas. Making milk and feeding babies isn't always easy - it's a labor of love - so I like that this brand recognizes that and tries to provide some support.
Here's what could be better - -This pump is LOUD. I've been working from home due to COVID and my husband knows when I'm pumping with this pump vs my other. I can make a work call (weird, but you gotta do what you gotta do) with my other pump and no one can hear that I'm pumping. -The battery pack takes actual batteries. Why didn't they just install a rechargeable battery like their competitors? -There's no timer. You will need to use your own timer unless you let the pump just shut off on it's own. My other pump has a timer, so I kept forgetting to set one and then lost track of how long I'd been pumping. Not the end of the world, but just fyi. There's also no nightlight if you like that feature as well. -While the vibration was somewhat comfortable and the milk output was good, I was only comfortable on the lowest setting.
I received this product as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel, but my opinion is my own.
Overall, if you want a compact, portable pump that comes with stylish and practical accessories for work or travel - this is a great option!
I would recommend this to a friend!

A good hands-on pump

This is different than all other Medela pumps tried! I was unsure when Stellar Product Testing Panel sent it to me to review if I would like it but I have been pleasantly surprised. If you are in the market for a hands-on pump this one is quieter than most, and pumps just as effectively as all my other pumps. I love how compact it is, and that it can be battery-run! With it's stylish little bag and cooler being able to hold everything you could need for on-the-go pumping I have found it a practical and convenient setup. The pre-programed settings were handy, and maybe more useful if you are a first time pumper. My favorite thing about this pump is actually the shape of the breast-shield! It is an oval shape that contours to your breast for a more secure feeling fit than all of the round-shaped ones. All in all, if you're looking for a corded pump I have only good things to say about this one!

Stick with the PISA!

Let me preface this review by saying that I am fairly experienced in regards to pumping - both with Medela pumps and other brands. I am currently nursing/pumping for our second set of twins - babies 7 & 8. I have owned several PISA pumps over the years. I have also owned Freestyle & Sonata pumps and I have used Symphony pumps in the hospital and also at work (RN.)
I started reading reviews for this pump towards the end of my pregnancy since I was already familiar with the production needs that come along with twins. I was excited about the potential of the MaxFlow technology so I took the plunge and ordered this pump.
I give this pump 2 stars because (1) it is absolutely great from an aesthetic standpoint, and (2) I loved that it is a closed system & easy to assemble/clean. Functionally, however, I would be better off using it as a decor item.
Setup is reminiscent of the Sonata. Simple assembly with minimal parts does result in easier cleaning & less effort after a pumping session. Everything is intuitive and attractive - I just wish it worked as well as it looks.
I was impressed by how quiet the motor is. The breast shields are comfortable as well. My issue begins when it is time to take care of business. I immediately noticed that the suction was almost nonexistent compared to the PISA or other Medela pumps. I can see my nipples move with the vacuum - but the sensation comparable to a tickle rather than a healthy latch!
I am able to achieve letdown with this pump simply because my breasts are very responsive thanks to being trained by two hungry babies. That being said, it does not empty my breasts - the output appears to be purely passive. I have to use a different pump to do the job after each attempt with the Pump in Style MaxFlow.
I have gone back to using a PISA with an old motor (from our first set of twins) so that I can pump for my 6-week-olds.
I really wanted to love this pump, but it definitely doesn't work for everyone! If you are looking for a fail-safe pump I still recommend the PISA.
**I want to add that I have tried boiling, reassembling & even using replacement tubing prior to writing this review.**

Confused

I just switched from the medela symphony rental pump the hospital gives out over to the medela pump in style with max flow. I noticed with this purchased medela pump I don’t feel like I’m emptying out all the way and my nipples are moving around with the same breast shield size. I’m wondering what I should do to fix these issues without having to buy a different pump. Is there anyway to use the 90 degree angle flange on this? I’m thinking that works better for me to empty out and not have moving nipples.

I actually prefer my old Pump in Style to the MaxFlow version for a couple reasons. One, I HATE these connectors and membranes because of the opaque design. I like the see-thru version so I can actually see if I’m getting milk out and how much - is it drops or is it still squirting out? You really tell even by trying to move the bottle all around to try and see what’s dropping in. Also, to say that this pump is fewer parts simply isn’t true. You still have a bottle, a connector, a membrane, and a flange, all of which still have to be cleaned regularly. I wish any pump could figure out how to make these easier! I think these membranes take longer to dry because of all the ridges in them too. It makes it easy for water to sit in them. As far as the pump itself, I don’t think I get any more Milk than I have with any other pump (I have the old PIS and a Spectra. I hate that you can’t see what suction setting you’re on like you can with the old knob style. All in all, sadly I think Medela really missed the mark with this “upgrade”. :-(

1 star ONLY for Medela's customer service

If I could rate JUST the pump, I would give it negative stars. I had a premature baby and my pump broke 2 days after I started using it. Milk started going into the tubing, got into the motor and I lost suction. NOT fun when we're trying to keep your milk supply up for baby.
My lactation consultant did a full comprehensive exam of my pump in the NICU & she said I was the fifth person in a month to complain of the pump suddenly breaking. This is a brand new pump (since October 2020) so I think Medela is still trying to figure out the kinks.
I gave 1 star because Medela customer service was AMAZING. They did a quick "troubleshoot" over the phone just to make sure my parts weren't broken or anything, but they agreed to send me a new pump at no charge since it was under warranty.

I was very excited to try this product. I have both the Spectra S1 and the Medela In Style with Max Flow. Some pros are that the product is small, closed connection, and there aren't many parts so clean up is easy. The biggest disappointment for me is that even though it's portable, it still needs to be plugged into an outlet. The pump comes with a battery pack but it requires 8 batteries. For me personally, I need something light and portable that I could take to work and not have to look for an outlet. Overall though it is a good pump with adequate suction.

It has been a week

I have a premie in the NICU and have been using the pump for a week. Tonight the suction on the pump has stopped working. So now I am going to miss out on 3 pumping sessions because there are no stores open for me to go purchase a pump. I went w a brand that I was familiar with but apparently I should have done more research. Been using this pump from April 3rd until today the 10th and it has failed. The pump is also loud and rattles across my nightstand I had to start sitting it on the bed next to me to keep the noise down.
