A sleek, portable pump option

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was so excited to use this pump because I used the original meddle pump in style around the clock for 15 months for my first son. I admit, I’ve fallen in love with another brand for my second son, so it’s been amazing to try this out as part of the stellar parent review panel - I got this unit for free in exchange for my honest review.
Hot take: Very portable unit and will make a lot of sense for most people. To get the most out of this pump, you will need some time for the after market parts makers to catch up. This pump is best for someone who is new to pumping and not looking to use existing medela parts (think of it like old pump in style [PIS] to symphony, rather than PIS to newer PIS). If this pump is covered by insurance, I think it’s a great option, but this is very pricey out of pocket.
The unit itself is very small and compact, but the flanges and connectors are also very large, so I’m not sure that traveling with it is all that better. This pumped milk as well as or better than the pumps I have (I did direct comparison to one wearable and one non-medela home use “hospital grade” pump. It can’t compete with the symphony.
The good: Small, sleek design and very smartly done. It seems like you could safely share this pump with others as there is no backflow (YAY! Big improvement over last PIS) but they note this voids the warranty. There are fewer parts to clean and replace - yay! It is very similar to wearable pump styles and very easy. I found it easy to clean and sterilize however I’m still unsure that the nooks and crannies in the plastic housing won’t cause problems in the long term. The tubing update is sleek and great and easy to make a single. I really like the flex shields, but they run small. I always wear a 24mm (have for years across every brand I’ve tried), and with these I was like “oops, must have grabbed the 21mms”... nope. I didn’t. I guess I need to buy the next size if/when available? The plastic tops allow for privacy which is so nice in a shared lactation facility, like at a ball park for example. Because it’s not clear though, it’s harder to tell when it is clean and if things need adjusting. I didn’t ever get moisture in the tubing.
The weird: I don’t get the loop. Show me how this loop helps, please! The bottle stand is a missed opportunity. Suction please! Let me do stuff with one hand! As is, they don’t help that much.
Downsides: You are not able to use existing medela parts that you may have. This isn’t all bad because these are smart and intuitive parts. Unlike other pumps, there is no night light, no timer, no visual representation of your setting and you can only adjust the suction strength and have the “let down” frequency and “regular” frequency. It vibrates quite loudly (I measured up to 60 db) on hard surfaces (better on soft surfaces). It won’t fit my playtex or direct-to-bag adaptors super well which is a BIG bummer. That’s the biggest downside. It doesn’t have an internal battery, but on the set that includes the bag and cooler they include a battery adaptor - it uses A LOT of batteries. I couldn’t bring myself to see how long batteries would last. I found this slightly less comfortable than my go to pump but it was slightly more effective which I have a hard time acknowledging - I think this could be completely mitigated if I could adjust frequency and strength and have a visual for my settings like my other pump. I wish it had a handle, or rings so I could attach a shoulder strap.
Durability: Holds up well, seems strong.
Longevity: No issues yet!
Aesthetic: Modern and sleek
Cost of Ownership: VERY affordable! Only one piece to replace regularly, really.
Also of note: Hefty side plug may not work in some power strips but its great for a regular wall outlet (2 prong)
Accessories: Bag isn't my style, but it works (wish it was bigger), cooler is great but not tall enough for bigger bottles. Appreciate the battery pack for travel!
Bottle side: fits standard bottle openings like other Medela pumps, not wide mouth (you can get an adaptor but it won't fit on this pump.
Overall, this is a HUGE improvement over the old PIS, and I’m super happy to have it as an option. It's honestly so much better and is a great choice if it's covered by insurance. I’d be lying, though, if I said I loved it more than my current go-to pump, but that one has a handle, more suction options, a timer, visual settings, night light and an amazing built in battery (I also paid a little bit out of pocket for mine and didn’t get the accessory set like pump bag, cooler, etc). I would not be able to pay full price for this pump at the current price.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Update!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this breast pump from the Stellar Product Testing Panel. Since I have been pumping and nursing for a year I was really excited to try a new pump. My favorite part of the pump was the micro vibrations. I feel like that sped up my letdown and at this point I just want the quickest pumping session possible. For me personally, it was hard to gauge if my milk output increased with the use of this pump because I already have an oversupply, however a quicker letdown was really nice. I also like that the tubing is joined into one long cable and I like the size of the actual pump along with the stands for the bottles. I am working from home, but pumping at my desk so a smaller pump and less tubing don’t interfere with my desk space. The stands are awesome because with pumping at my desk, if I am stuck pumping during a meeting (on mute) I can keep the storage bottles on my desk until the meeting is over so I can store it without fear of them falling over due to top heavy cables. The silicone flanges were comfortable and I liked that 21mm flanges were included. I felt like it was easier to clean too without any hard to reach nooks. The bag and freezer pack are nice bonuses. The two things that I dislike the most about this pump was that it did feel like it was a little bit louder and the other thing is that there is no digital screen or a dialed to let me know exactly what setting I am on aside from remember how many clicks I was at the last time.

All around great pump— best milk output by far!

I have been a dedicated Pump in Style user though two babies and almost 3 years of (total) pumping, so when I was sent this by the Stellar Product Testing Panel I was SO excited. The first thing I noticed was the sleek new pump itself which felt so much more updated from the original.
I also was very excited about it being a closed system which eliminated the hassle of trying to keep water out of the tubes.
I found this to some how pump even more efficiently than the original (maybe it’s the micro vibrations?), and the comfort fit shields were SO much more contoured and eliminated the awkward compression of traditional shaped shields. After using this pump for a few weeks, my supply had consistently gone up from my daily pumping, which was a welcome surprise.
Overall in my experience there is no better at home pump than the Medela Pump in Style when it comes to getting the most milk for your time and effort, and also for its durability and lifespan. Thanks to the upgrades made with the new model with Max Flow, you can be sure this pump will have you comfortably pumping and getting the most milk as long as you need it. Because the new model is smaller and more enclosed, I feel even more confident that it is hygienic and durable, particularly if you need to pump on then go, you’ll appreciate the new compact pump.
If you want to make sure you get the most milk from each pumping session, and be comfortable while you do it, the Medela Pump in Style is a sure bet. I recommend this whether you’re a first time mom or planning for your next baby, this is a great all around pump.

I love this breast pump!

I really love this breast pump. I had been using a different popular one before this one and this one is way more efficient and easier on my breasts. It doesn’t pull nearly as hard, but still produces the same if not more milk. The setting variety was great and it was really easy to find a setting that worked for me. I loved the fact that the pump had few pieces to clean. That was the issue I was having with my previous pump. I exclusively pump, so cleaning in between each pump is important to me. These are so easy to clean. My favorite part is that it’s lightweight, and I can’t literally carry it anywhere. I love the bag that came with it along with it as well. I would recommend this pump to all the pumping mamas out there! I received this pump from Stellar Product Testing Panel.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Pump in Style with Max flow was the least intimidating of any pump I've ever used!
I love the programmed settings and and that it came with its own travel bags and accessories!
I am used to manual pumping and this gave my hands a break! I got the same if not more out of this one as I would with my manual
Bonus points because it was easy to clean.
I received this pump to review through the Stellar Product Testing Panel

Nice extras and easy to use

I expected a lot more from this pump. With all the extra features, I assumed that it would greatly increase my output, but I actually noticed a decrease in how much milk I was able to express in comparison with other pumps I have tried. The pre programmed settings were nice to have, but didn’t make much of a difference for me. The sleek design was appealing and I liked that were weren’t a ton of buttons or settings visible. It’s very lightweight and I appreciated the cooler and carrying bag it came with. I received this product to review from the stellar product testing panel.

An improvement from its predecessor

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the Pump In Style (original) with my first baby and I felt it did a good job for what I needed it for (occasional pumping), but I disliked having to clean all the parts all the time and the tubing getting hard water stains in it. I was told this was the difference between a closed system and an open one. So, this new Pump In Style with Max Flow is a closed system which means less parts to clean, but also an overall more hygienic pump. The flanges also now include a rubber seal around them with makes the fit better, more comfortable and less likely for you to spill milk. I am all for these new changes! I liked the presets and was able to find one that worked well for me. I pumped just as much as I do with my other pump. I am very satisfied with the changes Medela has made and think this will only make the brand more popular. I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family. I received this product complimentary from the Stellar Product Testing Panel in exchange for my honest review.

Overall a nice pump
on September 12, 2020

I received the Medela PIS Max Flow as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel and for the most part I was very pleased with it. The pieces are great quality as usual, and very minimal at that. Which of course is an added bonus since we Mamas don’t have much time in the day. Less cleaning is always what I look for! The flanges needed different sizing. For me, they fit. But I immediately thought it was odd to not include other sizes for those who may not be a 21mm. The flanges also have a tint to them. They aren’t clear. So when you are pumping you can’t see if your rubbing against the side. Big concern for me and a habit of mine to always make sure my nipples don’t get raw from the sides. I may not be new to pumping, but I still like to see what’s going on, you know? The bottles have stands which I thought was nice as I didn’t have to be extremely over cautious about the bottles spilling and all that precious liquid gold going to waste! The pump itself is beautiful, I love that it came with a carry bag! The suction is perfect and not a loud machine at all. One downfall to the pump... When you take it on the go, it’s battery operated! Big big concern for me. I don’t like buying batteries. I could see myself somewhere and the pump just dying on me mid let down. Having to remember to pack extra batteries in the bag is just another extra thing to remember. A rechargeable battery by usb cable or something would have been a much better option.
