Functional and Eye-Catching

An incredibly fun build. The technic insides are super interesting to put together as during multiple stages of the building process you can play with the innards, slowly understanding how it's all put together until it all finally clicks.
Really the one drawback is the beginning when you have to put all the keys together but after that, it's an unmatched process. Plus, IT ACTUALLY WORKS and the color choice is fantastic.

Poor quality control, missing pieces
on January 1, 2023

Purchased the typewriter for the family to construct over the holidays. Halfway through, we discovered it was missing pieces and therefore we were unable to complete it. We ordered the replacement parts through Lego's website but were informed it would take up to two weeks just to ship them out. Needless to say, everyone was very disappointed with Lego's poor quality control and lack of prompt customer service to make things right. For a premium priced product we expected much better. In the future, we will certainly explore other brands/products for family entertainment before we even consider buying from Lego again.

Fun to build
on July 7, 2021

I had a lot of fun building this set! I was worried about the more technical elements, as I've not done many technical builds but the instructions were really easy to follow. I did run into several issues during build/play. When building the key mechanisms (the parts that move) I was missing one of the spacer pieces (I believe 6338422) but I was able to use one of the extra single-spacers (like 6271165) and that worked fine. One of my other build issues came when building the part that holds the rest of the "keys". There are two curved pieces (6344820) that are mostly aesthetician which would NOT allow the keys to fit evenly. The corners stuck out just enough so that the keys couldn't attach to the tube with even spacing, so I ended up removing the curved pieces. My final issue comes with playing with the typewriter, the wheels on the roller do not have enough grip to actually roll the paper up, so if the paper is in it barely holds on to the bottom and frequently falls out. Not the biggest issue, as the set is beautiful on its own, I love the silver accents, the ribbon, and how all the keys look together, but it is a bit of a bummer to not be able to feed paper into it. Overall I'd recommend this to someone who likes very aesthetically pleasing builds that aren't very technically challenging, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for a "working" typewriter.

Beautiful acquisition for writers

I didn't grow up with Legos, but I did get to play with them at family and friends' houses a couple of times. This machine was little bit difficult for me (I had to assemble, unassemble and reassemble it), because I forgot parts that were a bit hidden in the fold of the instruction book, or because certain parts were similar, and separating the pieces without damaging them was sort of difficult. While I didn't enjoy the process as much as I'd hoped, it's definitely a great acquisition. I really like how it looks; it has a beautiful mint colour, with red, gray and black details. It's ideal for those of us who love to write (but prefer to write by hand or on a computer, for practicality); it will appeal to those who like to display retro pieces in their spaces, and also, there is always a bit of pride when you have something handmade. I love that the typewriter was created by a Lego fan, just as the rest of the Lego Ideas designs :) Congratulations to Steve Guinness and all the team behind this typewriter. It turned out amazing n_n

Great Concept/Defective Set
on August 8, 2021

I am giving this set 3 stars, in spite of the fact that I was unable to complete it and have initiated a return. This is a beautiful set and was fun to build, until bag #5, when numerous missing pieces became apparent, and overall bagging from that point on was out-of-sequence. It was disappointing, as I've never encountered so many issues with a LEGO build. But I chalk it up to a rare anomaly somewhere in production. Had my set been complete and properly organized, I've no doubt this would have been one of my favorite builds!

Can be improved.

I had the best time putting it together. The product and the mechanical designs are perfect but the actual execution may can use some evaluations. I realized that at the beginning when you put the arms together on the rods, the pieces that hold them in place can be hard to space. I noticed afterwards that if the spacing is not even, the keys don’t type properly. Then the carriage may just be a tidbit too heavy for the mechanism that carries it below (the spring and the rollers) because I heard it rubbing against the track. When I have a chance, I am going to ‘maintenance’ it to redo a few things to try to test my theories and see if it will get better.

Typewriter Christmas
on January 16, 2024

My grandson, who is 12, has been eyeing and wishing for the Lego Typewriter for a couple of years. Finally gave it to him this Christmas. He is thrilled with it and began immediately building it. Almost finished building it and loves the mechanics of the typewriter. He prefers to "display" his legos versus playing with them.
