[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this to overseed my lawn in early September. The bag said that I would start to seed the seed germinating within 7-10 days. After 12 days I didn't see anything, so I was frustrated and bought penygnton grass seed. A week later I started seeing results and two weeks later I had the thickest lawn I have ever had. I am guessing that both grass seeds worked. I would just make sure that Scott's makes it clear that the seed may not come up within 7-10 days.
Pros: Effective
Cons: Problem with label

Should have read the reviews before purchasing this product. DO NOT buy it. Followed directions to a "T". Temperature was perfect, watered as recommended, covered with straw, added Scotts fertilizer….2 weeks, nothing. Big waste of money.
Cons: Didn't work as expected
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We are sorry that you have experienced problems while using Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. Generally, we recommend seeding in late spring when temperatures are warm not only during the day, but at night also.
Temperature plays a critical role in seedling germination. Soil temperatures for northern (cool season) type turfgrass seed (Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue) must be at least 55 degrees F for seed to germinate. For best results, daytime temperatures must typically be in the 60-80 degree F. range and not going below 50 degrees F at night. Seeds will not germinate if the temperatures are cold at night, or are fluctuating from high day temperature to very low night time temperatures. The best time to seed cool season grasses is early to mid-fall.
One major "enemy" of a newly seeded lawn is herbicide. Make sure that no weed control or weed prevention product has been used in the area, as those products will also prevent or inhibit germination. When used on newly germinated lawns, herbicides will kill off the new grass.

Can't Believe It's The Same Lawn

My lawn took a beating with the high heat and lack of rain this past summer. I decided to dethatch and aerate this fall and overseed with Scott'[s Turf Builder Sun and Shade seed and Scott's Starter Fertilizer. Five weeks later, my lawn is a thick, deep green and looks as good as any I have ever seen. I used to have a professional lawn service treating my lawn and when I called to terminate their services and told them I was going to try to do it myself, they told me since I couldn't get the commercial grade materials, I would not have success. Boy, were they ever wrong. My lawn never looked so good. I would match it against anyone's.
Pros: Value, Quality, Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective

We apologize for the inconvenience you’ve experienced when using Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. This particular product usually has a lot of success stories from users, but it is helpful when we get reviews like yours to help us produce quality seed. Here are a few tips to consider when growing in the future. For Cool Season grasses like Bluegrass, Ryegrass, and different types of Fescues soil temperatures must be at least 55 degrees (+12.7 Celsius) for grass seed to germinate and can take between 4 -21 days to see germination. Warm season grasses like Bermudagrass, Centipede and Zoysia, which germinates in early summer, requires soil temperatures between 75 - 90 degrees (24 - 32 Celsius) and can take between 5-28 days to see visible germination. Watering also plays a defining factor in germination. We recommend watering 1-2 times a day until germination is visible and then watering 1- 1 ½” per week as needed. Both excessive watering and not enough watering can slow down or even stop germination of the product. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at http://tinyurl.com/mds8zo5 and one of our representatives would be glad to assist you. We hope this issue has not caused you to lose faith in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix, as we use reviews like yours to maintain and improve the quality product that you and other consumers have come to know and love.

We apologize that our grass seed did not provide the results you had expected. It's certainly frustrating to go through the effort to prepare an are for seeding only to have the seed not germinate. There are several reasons why this may happen. Watering too much or not enough, improper temperatures, inadequate soil contact, or using a weed control prematurely can all influence the germination rates of seed. If you haven't already, we ask that you contact us directly so that we can discuss our guarantee and the product in more detail. We are sorry that you have experienced problems while using Scotts PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix. When planting new seed, it is important not to use any weed controls on that area until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times. After the fourth mowing the grass is considered mature enough to endure a weed chemical. If a weed control is used before seeding, refer to the label for reseeding times.
