[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have a very shady spot that is hard to water and this seed is starting to cover the area. It's been 2 years but no other seed was successful at all. I'm confident this will be the year where I have grass that sustains for many years
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Quality

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I don't have a sprinkler system. So I have to get out there with the hose whenever I can. Even with the inconsistency of watering my lawn came in thick and green.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Since I was a kid my dad has always used scotts, with good success. Not because my Dad used scotts not I have to, but that Scotts products really work. My neighbors spedd thousands for landscapers and chemical companies per year to keep their lawns looking great, but go down to my local hardware store in town pick up some Scotts and beautiful lawn here we come!
Like Scotts turfbuilder products I've always used scotts seed.
It works the best and price is good. I've used special garden center seed but hasn't produced a lawn that Scotts does.
Keep on do 'in what you do 'in Scotss and my kids and grand kids will be using your products for years to come.
Pros: Value, Quality, Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective, best seed

Need seed that does not require a lot of water to germinate

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] While the seeds eventually came up with "tons" of water, it got the job done. The seed was advertised as a water efficient seed, I believe it took a lot of water for the seed to germinate. Also for those of us who have the scott lawn service you have to watch them to make sure that they do not spray the newly seeded area with a weed killer when they treat the rest of the lawn.
Pros: eventually gets the job done., average
Cons: Didn't work as expected

I have used this grass seed for the last five years and have had great success with it. This year I built a drainage system and seeded over it and mixed with Scotts fertilized garden soil. I also seeded several bare spots on my lawn and when nothing appeared after three weeks I bought another bag and additional soil. It has now been an additional three weeks and I have about 40% germination. Typically the grass appears after 7-10 days.
I will now have to wait until fall to sod or try a new product brand and hope for better results. I'm very disappointed because of all the work I put into my lawn.
Pros: Easy to Use, Good Directions
Cons: Didn't work as expected
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
Response from ScottsBy AmandaConsumer ServicesJuly 2, 2016
We are sorry that you have experienced problems while using Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. Water is an important factor in successful seeding. The newly seeded areas must be kept constantly moist for weeks on end. Allowing the soil to dry out even for an hour during the critical germination phase can result in seedling death. This may require that you give the seeded areas a light watering two to three times a day for the first few weeks. Seeds must come into direct contact with the soil in order to germinate. If seed is laid on top of old grass, you will have about a 2% germination rate. Seed also needs exposure to sunlight. A heavy cover of straw, soil, or other material will cause the seeds to rot, or severely limit germination. Cover seeds with no more than 1/4 of an inch (.63 centimeter) of topsoil or lawn soil. Two "enemies" of newly seeded lawns are herbicides and lawn diseases. While you have very little control over the outbreak of a lawn disease, do make sure that no weed control or weed prevention chemical has been used in the area, as those products will also prevent or inhibit germination. Finally, temperature plays a critical role in seed germination. Air temperature must typically be between 60 and 80 degrees. Very hot weather will also inhibit seed germination. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience please contact us to see what can be done. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I always use this product. It works. Every year certain areas of my lawn tend to die either from insects or heat. In early fall, I aerate my entire lawn and over seed. I apply a starter fertilizer. You must keep the seeds moist in order for them to germinate. I find that a lot of people complain that their seeds didn't take. I have seen people throw the seed down and never water or don't water as frequently as recommended. Because they didn't follow through with a proper watering schedule, the seeds dried out and/or the seedlings died.
I recommend watering twice a day at first, morning and early evening for 10 minutes with sprinklers or hand hose water until you feel that the top inch of soil is moist. Maintaining that moisture on a daily basis will keep the seeds moist. Do not over water. Over watering can generate poor results and also you can risk washing away the seeds. Also, pay attention to the weather. Obviously, if it rains there is no reason to water that day. Sometimes in the early fall, we can experience above normal temperatures. You may have to moisten the soil three times a day instead of twice. Once the seed grows about an inch or so, you can cut back on the watering to once a day, preferably early morning because the sun can easily damage or kill the new seedlings. Grass seed may take a couple weeks to sprout. If the temps are too hot or too cold, this can delay sprouting. Seeding may be tedious, but the results are rewarding!
