This spreader fails on every level

Bought this spreader after my previous Scott's spreader rusted through. Since this was all plastic figured would never have to worry about rust, however, this spreader spreads at a rate that is over twice the amount suggested by the Scott's settings on the bag. This is very helpful for Scott's bottom line by dumping twice as much product on the ground but it isn't good for the lawn or my wallet.
Cons: Didn't work as expected, poor quality, cheaply built, expensive to use
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

How to Calibrate Scotts Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader.
1. Set micrometer to 6
2. Turn the spreader over so that you are looking at the outside of the bottom of the hopper.
3. Squeeze the trigger with your foot.
4. Locate the calibration line (small, embossed line on the bottom of the hopper the 2nd tooth from the spring in the center).
5. With the micrometer set at 6 and the trigger squeezed against the handle, either the raised ridge (if present) or the front edge of the shut-off bar should be aligned with the calibration line.
Note: If the hopper is missing a calibration line - using the setting of a 6 they should be able to pass a 9/64" drill bit through the opening just to the right of the center. (First opening to the right of the spring.)
6. To adjust the alignment, use a small wrench to turn the black calibration screw at the lower end of the control wire leading from the micrometer.
7. Adjust the screw until the calibration line and either the raised ridge (if present) or the front edge of the shut-off bar meet.

What cheap junky spreaders and they are expensive. The tines don't adjust or wear out so spread of product inconsistant.Made of all cheap plastic tht cracks (the hopper) and falls apart. Really dissapointed...had mine only ae couple years. Wish the products could be applied in liquid form using hose end application. I find this easier. Really think quality is awful.
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: falls apart/cracks, tines wear out

calibration off; get rid of plastic

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] calibration is off as every one of these reviews shows. Even Scotts knows it, they now suggest setting the dial to 8 to check if bar is lined up. Also I find the plastic spreaders hard to follow when putting fertilizer on dry lawn like step 1. also grass has to be short during step 2-4 or else wet lawn clogs up spreader holes. I don't think they want us using spreader but rather their lawn service
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: Didn't work as expected, calibration, no weight for wheel
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

ALWAYS CHECK CALIBRATION FIRST

This is a basic all plastic spreader. For plastic the quality seems to be average. The one thing you MUST do is checked the calibration. To do this scroll through the reviews until you find the one with a customer rep. response. This will walk you through the steps to make sure your spreader is calibrated. Otherwise you may dump a bag meant for 15,000 square feet on less than 5000 square feet. Not good. Scotts please make this easier!! I would have preferred to research and find out if this was the best spreader for the money but we live in a small town far away any big box stores so we just made do with what appeared to be the best one at our local Ace hardware store.
Pros: Effective
Cons: calibration needs checking!

Good drop spreader but poor match of meter setting to product delivered

I have owned the previous version of this drop spreader and loved it. A big selling point of the Scotts lawn products and the drop spreader is you should be able to trust the recommended amount of fertilizer and trust the setting on the drop spreader to deliver it. I read the reviews that stated the poor match of the setting on the spreader to the actual delivered fertilizer. My results today were the same with my new spreader. For Bonus S weed and feed a setting of 5 1/2 was recommended. It is very noticeable that is way too much. I tested for a while and ended up with a setting of 3 to deliver the recommended amount. That is quite a ways off. I rate the "set it and trust it" as poor as a result. However, the spreader is good and does the job. I still recommend it. The calibration nub was was on the mark as described by Scotts, so that wasn't the problem. Now that I know the rate for that product I used, I wrote it on a card and will keep it on the spreader. I will do the same checks on the next product and write it down. If Scotts sorts out the problem I won't worry about it any more. If you want to adjust the calibration to match the numbers on the products you wouldn't have to worry about it. I chose not to do that yet as I do not know if it is a change in granule size that may be causing the problem and that may not be the same with all products.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective
Cons: poor match of setting to amount of prod. delivered
