Good product and value

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had a couple of these spreaders. The first developed problems with the gauge used to regulate the flow and with the wheels sticking after about 10 years of use once or twice a year. I've had the second about the same amount of time and while I haven't had any problems with the gauge yet, the wheels sometimes get stuck. I've learned to be very careful to hose down the spreader after each use--still only once or twice a year--and to use lubricant on the wheels from time to time. When they are functioning properly, they are easy to handle and spread whatever product I have in them very evenly.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Value, Quality
Cons: Didn't work as expected

A good general use spreader

The Scotts Turf Builder Classic drop spreader provides a good, consistent coverage for application of fertilizers, seed, seed/starter mixes and even - in a stretch - salt pellets onto the sidewalk/walkways in the winter!!
Very simple - line up the arrows to know where you have and haven't fed/seeded; nothing worse than a lawn with stripes, right?! Best used in non-windy areas or days, so the application falls into the lawn where you want it -- no reason to do it on your neighbor's lawn, right?
Pros: Quality, Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective
Cons: needs calibration every few years

It might not be the spreader

Two weeks ago I bought a replacement drop spreader and a bag of weed and feed which has a setting of 5 3/4 for the spreader. After about 50 feet I realized it was dropping far too fast and I would run out in less than 1000 sq ft. I took it down to 4 3/4 and it was still dropping far too fast; dropped it 4 - still a problem. Finally took it to 3 3/4 and was through the bag in less than 2000 sq ft. I call the support number and the young lady was gracious enough to refund my cost of the fertilizer, but was no help on why I was having a problem.
Then I went on line and found this discussion - who knew that the spreader has a calculation mark! The lady at the support desk never mentioned it. I checked and it lines up perfectly at 6; my mark is in the center, not at one of the edges.
I bought another bag of Weed and Feed and set the drop at 3 - it does still seem to be a little fast, but was acceptable. I will make the opening a little smaller next time.
There are a number of things that need to be checked to figure out what the real problem is
1. is the calibrated setting at 6 incorrect and the opening should be much smaller than it is at 6
2. is the 5 3/4 opening incorrect for the Weed and Feed product and should be more like 2 3/4?
3. Is the Weed and Feed product manufactured incorrectly and it is too granular
I have an unopened bag of Step 3 and the directions on the bag read that the setting should be 5 3/4 - I do not know if the product is more or less granular than Weed and Feed.
I think Scotts needs to do some quick research here and find out what the root cause (cute - initially unintended, still cleaver) of the problem is. Then they need to let us know how to fix the problem
Until then I will have to use the drop spreader at a very low setting.
I am not yet ready to give up on the spreader - and for the amount of money I am not about to throw it away.
Scotts response here will determine if I continue with the Scott products.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When I was shopping around for a new spreader I can across this Scott's brand one and I couldn't be happier! It doesn't get stuck/clogged and it evenly spreads the seed. Easy to use and would defiantly recommend.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have had my spreader for almost 10 years.
Most of the time it is left outside.
It still works fine and I will replace with same type.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Quality

Decent spreader so far 5 star opportunity lost on Calibration instructions

Drop Spreader accuracy. Calibration is the major complaint of most. It resulted in product waste, unhappy customers and returned product........ Easy fix by Scotts:
Instructions should have pretty pictures, or drawings.................... **Pointer to the 2nd green tooth from the center showing the little Circle with a line through it. Label it Calibration Line. (consider value of a contrasting color for the Calibration Line)
**Pointer to the front edge of the projecting ridge on the shut-off bar should be aligned with the calibration line (consider the value of a contrasting color for the Calibration Line)
**Alternative could be a you tube video.
Always have the least knowledgeable folks you can find test your instructions before releasing them
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: instructions lacking

Great Product...Except

I have been purchasing Scotts products for many, many years and have always been completely satisfied. I prefer the drop spreader over the rotary and purchased this one to replace a much older version. This product works well..except..the tab on the pull handle which opens the hopper, keeps coming out from the catch designed to keep it in place. As long as I push the tab back in place, it works as designed. Otherwise, I would have walked around thinking I'm spreading a product when in reality only a small portion is coming out.
Pros: Value, Easy to Use, Good Directions
Cons: Didn't work as expected
