[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There was a day when the agitator (toothed rod that churns the material), and the Flow and Shut Off Bars were steel. This was problematic with corrosion. However, plastic (which the Scotts Drop Spreader uses for these parts), has its own problems. The Shut Off Bar deforms under the pressure of the material, and this results in more material dropping onto the lawn, and it results in the spreader staying open when the handle is released, so that product continues to drop. This is particularly a problem with pelletized products. The market needs a well engineered drop spreader for serious homeowners. The shut off should be a separate device from the spreader calibration plate, The spreader adjustment needs to be a positive mechanical setting. All of these parts need to be Stainless Steel. The drop swath should be 24". The hopper can still be a good grade of plastic.
Pros: none
Cons: Didn't work as expected, cheap material and engineeering
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I read a lot of reviews and there are numerous that complain of a "calibration issue." I chalked it up to ticked off customers and decided to give it a try. Using Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard, my friend gave me half a bag. With this spreader set at the recommended "6" it dumped a half a bag on my 600 Sq ft front yard. Didn't even get to the back (maybe additional 1000 Sq ft). I'm now flooding my yard to try and not completely scorch it. Would not recommend and won't buy their stuff again. Probably destroyed my yard.
Pros: Easy to Use, it's green
Cons: Didn't work as expected, dumps way too much product, probably fried lawn

This spreader like the other drop spreader reviews is terrible. I just spread a 16,000 sq ft bag of turf builder with grab grass killer and the spreader dumped all in 1,600 sq ft area. I had this spreader a long time and now I remember why I did not use it. Their products for weed killer and fertilizer is great but the tools they have to spread this is less than fair.
Pros: i
Cons: Didn't work as expected, Difficult to use

We are sorry to hear about your experience with the Scotts Turf Builder AccuGreen 3000 Drop Spreader. From your description It sounds like your spreader may be out of calibration. Your Turf Builder AccuGreen 3000 Drop Spreader was calibrated at the factory. However, a spreader's calibration may change or slip over time or during periods of heavy use.
You may check the calibration by first adjust your micrometer setting to 6. Turn the spreader over so that you are looking at the outside of the bottom of the hopper. Use your foot to hold down the trigger. With the micrometer set at 6 and the trigger squeezed against the handle, the front edge of the projecting ridge on the shut-off bar should be aligned with the calibration line located on the 2nd or 3rd tooth from the center.
To adjust the alignment, use a small wrench to turn the black calibration screw at the lower end of the control wire leading from the micrometer rate setting barrel. Adjust the screw until the calibration line and raised ridge or front edge of the shut-off bar meet. If you have any difficulty checking or adjusting the calibration, contact us and we will be happy to help walk you through the adjustment.
We appreciate your taking the time to share your experience and will forward your comments to our quality control and marketing teams. If we can be of any assistance please don't hesitate to contact us by using the following link. http://tinyurl.com/7ag7a3n

Terrible Drop Spreader

Bought this spreader last fall when my 12 year old one broke. Didn't use until today. Wish I had read the reviews before I used it. Who would have thought that Scott's would make such a bad product? How hard is it to make a drop spreader! I didn't realize there was a problem until I ran out of a 5000sq ft bag at under 3000 sq ft!! I look it up to see if the setting is wrong and find out the they are all bad! Too bad I can't return this piece of junk! Now I'm also stuck with a way over fertilized yard too. No more trust in Scott fertilizer products or their drop spreaders. With all these problems they should have been recalled. Can't even guess how many other lawns are ruined!!
Pros: lemon
Cons: drops 2x-3x expected fertilizer
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Paid £30 in 2002 but I did hope it might outlast me.

I do not like condemning things, but please note that in my experience you will be lucky if this drop spreader works for longer than two years, assuming that the materials used have not improved since I purchased mine in 2002 having used it 3 times a year. The reason rusting steel. The first failure is the steel bar running through the plastic agitator, rust swells this steel bar up and it stiffens and eventually freezes the drive wheel up, the other wheel is just free running. So for the past 11 years annually I have cleaned the rust of this bar. Don’t waste your time rust treating or painting it as it will wear away very quickly where it passes through the hoppers plastic side, this is a friction bearing and it will rust up again. Finally I think from when it was 3 to 4 years old the plastic regulator shut off bar started sticking. This also has a steel bar fitted in it, corrosion causes this to fail. Rust expanding deforming and cracking it open, causing the regulator bar to stick open. Aggressive reshaping with sandpaper on the unique plastic profile of this bar is a short term fix before it goes to land fill. Very sad. Please tell me you now use just plastic or stainless steel tubing.
Pros: Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective, drops it low to the ground accurate up against bo
Cons: didn't last as long as expected, after its 2end year it failed
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Big disappointment regarding this product

This spreader constantly needs me to bounce it or move it around so that the stuff inside leave to container and get on to the ground. It is a pain to use and whatever is inside does not spread evenly and the grade of descent is not steep enough to have all the product get to the ground evenly. Takes me much longer than it should to use the product as I have to make sure the stuff comes out and does not get caught. Bad design, hard to use and overall very poor.
Cons: Didn't work as expected, Difficult to use, took too long to use, bad design, cumbersome
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Check Calibration Prior To Application

As a precautionary measure, check your spreader's calibration prior to applying fertilizer. I wish that I had.
After my trusty Scotts spreader finally succumbed to this AZ sun after many years, I purchased a Classic Drop Spreader on 05 April 2014. I wanted another Scotts AccuGreen 2000 because it can get into tight spots but couldn't find one. Went straight home and dumped a full bag on just my front lawn. Burnt the green right out of my grass, it is still trying to recover, lots of water helps.
I found the calibration instructions and it was an easy 2 minute fix. My bar was off over 1/4". Now it seems to work fine. I still plan on buying and using Scotts products as I always have.
