Found the site too late

I have been using Scott's products over the years and have not been entirely happy with the results. Some good, some not so good. So I hired a liquid fertilizer company instead. After two years of them treating my lawn I felt I could do better. So out came the "Classic Drop Spreader".
I measured the lawn, read the product specifications and set the spreader accordingly. I should have used a whole bag but instead I used about 40%. That is how badly off the settings are. I had no idea that you have to calibrate the spreader. I believe I know why I was not getting satisfactory results in the past. The spreader was not working correctly.
I will try to calibrate the unit and try again. If that doesn't do the trick the thing is going to Good Will.
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: Didn't work as expected

We're saddened to hear about your unsatisfactory experience with the spreader. Your Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader was initially calibrated at the factory, however, a spreader's calibration may change or slip over time or during periods of heavy use or shipping.
You may check the calibration by first adjusting your micrometer setting to 8. Turn the spreader over so that you are looking at the outside of the bottom of the hopper. Use your foot to hold down the trigger. With the micrometer set at 8 and the trigger squeezed against the handle, the front edge of the projecting ridge on the shut-off bar should be aligned with the calibration line located on the 2nd or 3rd tooth from the center.
To adjust the alignment, use a small wrench to turn the black calibration screw at the lower end of the control wire leading from the micrometer rate setting barrel. Adjust the screw until the calibration line and raised ridge meet. If you have any difficulty checking or adjusting the calibration, contact us and we will be happy to help walk you through the adjustment.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us using the information that can be found by following the link below, and we would be more than happy to further assist you in any way that we are able. http://www.scotts.com/smg/gosite/Scotts-v2/help

Don't use without testing first!

My recently purchased unit came from the factory mis-calibrated. It dumped nearly twice as much Scotts fertilizer as specified. The result was a severely burned lawn around the edges, which I just paid $750 to have replaced. So learn from me, and before you even open a bag of fertilizer, flip the unit on its back and test the calibration per the manufacturer's instructions.
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: Didn't work as expected

Fire Ants

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We fight the fire ants at our home every year, inside and outside. I use my Scott's Spreader to fight them from the outside. This spreader makes it so easy. Just pour in the fire ant poison, set the knob at the right setting, squeeze the handle and go.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Quality

Disappointed...again (see my EdgeGuard DLX spreader review).

1) It won't hold a calibration through even one spreading session. 2) A wheel fell off the first time I used it -- it turned out that a cotter pin was improperly installed. 3) The open backsides of the wheels catch the fertilizer and then tend to dump it when you make a turn, burning the grass. 4) The handle length is too short for a tall person. You have to bend over the whole time -- uncomfortable, sometimes painful! 5) The handle width is too narrow, if you have long arms you'll have a hard time walking a straight line on most lawns.
Pros: hopper won't rust
Cons: Messy, Didn't work as expected, Difficult to use, won't stay calibrated, wheel fell off, wheels catch fertilzer, hurts my back, hard to push in straight line, poor design, poor value
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this spreader about 15 years ago and besides the handle breaking, which Scotts replaced free of charge, I sure got my moneys worth. Easy to calibrate after the handle was replaced.
