Spreader is well made and storable

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was quite surprised about how well it was made. Many spreader settings to allow a precise amount of product being applied. It also has an edge guard so a person can regulate the amount of product being spread from side to side. Scotts Turf Builder Mini Spreader folds up so it stores easily. The spreader is well made and should give me many years of service.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Good Directions, Quality, Value

After running to the store to purchase a (what I thought to be a reliable brand) I found the Scotts® Turf Builder® Edgeguard® Mini Broadcast Spreader. I had to persuade my wife into let me purchase this spreader as I already own a tow-able version from a different manufacturer. I got it home and raised the handle. Placed the spreader to the appropriate setting. We were off to the races, until half way through my first bag which covers 4,000 sq ft. When a granular pellet decided to get under the rotary feeder and jam. After this occurred the all-plastic connection between feed rotor and spreading rotor broke causing drive assembly to fall to the ground. This will cause an abrupt halt to spreading fertilizer and caused a massive pile on lawn that will most likely kill my grass in the surrounding area. I thought I would at least write my experience with this product and I am wanting customers to be aware of this happening. I luckily did not injury myself on this product when the drive assembly dug into the turf, however I was very close to landing on it.
Pros: Easy to Use, Value
Cons: Didn't work as expected, faulty plastic drive assembly
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Excellent little spreader

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The spreader is just the right size for my yard. I have about 900 sq. feet and I finish spreading the products in less than 10 minutes at a normal pace as instructed. It is easy to handle and easy to store.

Spread Pattern Makes Dark Lines

I wish I had read some of the reviews before I bought this spreader. I now know that others have the same problem that I have experienced. There is a fault with the spinner/spreader. More fertilizer is distributed directly under the spreader in a one-foot strip. The result is dark green grass strips every five feet with non-fertilized areas in between.
To make matters worse, I was spreading Scotts fertilizer with Halts which is a pre-emergent to reduce crab grass and other weeds. I won't have any in the green strips but the rest of my 10,000 ft lawn will have plenty. I can't reapply the weed killer. The time has passed to apply it in order for it to be effective.
There is no excuse to sell a product with such obvious faults. Especially from a company who professes to be an expert in lawn care.
Cons: Difficult to use, Didn't work as expected, does not spread evenly., small wheels short handle
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Directions are a little hazy.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The drop spreader works very well. It is not always translatable for settings for fertilizers and lawn chemicals other than Scott.

Found the site too late

I have been using Scott's products over the years and have not been entirely happy with the results. Some good, some not so good. So I hired a liquid fertilizer company instead. After two years of them treating my lawn I felt I could do better. So out came the "Classic Drop Spreader".
I measured the lawn, read the product specifications and set the spreader accordingly. I should have used a whole bag but instead I used about 40%. That is how badly off the settings are. I had no idea that you have to calibrate the spreader. I believe I know why I was not getting satisfactory results in the past. The spreader was not working correctly.
I will try to calibrate the unit and try again. If that doesn't do the trick the thing is going to Good Will.

We're saddened to hear about your unsatisfactory experience with the spreader. Your Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader was initially calibrated at the factory, however, a spreader's calibration may change or slip over time or during periods of heavy use or shipping.
You may check the calibration by first adjusting your micrometer setting to 8. Turn the spreader over so that you are looking at the outside of the bottom of the hopper. Use your foot to hold down the trigger. With the micrometer set at 8 and the trigger squeezed against the handle, the front edge of the projecting ridge on the shut-off bar should be aligned with the calibration line located on the 2nd or 3rd tooth from the center.
To adjust the alignment, use a small wrench to turn the black calibration screw at the lower end of the control wire leading from the micrometer rate setting barrel. Adjust the screw until the calibration line and raised ridge meet. If you have any difficulty checking or adjusting the calibration, contact us and we will be happy to help walk you through the adjustment.
