Spreader became detached. Reattached multiple times and it's useless. 3rd time spreading and it's not repairable. EXTREMELY disappointed! And as posted in another review the handle is for someone 5'2". I have lower back issues and I can barely use this.

Poor Design & Quality

Used for first time today. Product is obviously cheaply build but it still functioned OK. The hardest part was keeping the EdgeGuard in the "off" position as it wanted to creep from off to on as you walk. This causes the spreader throw to change and will create streaking in the lawn if not monitored. I had to use a piece of duck tape to keep the EdgeGuard in the "off" position. Kind of hokey for a product from a major brand. A couple other criticisms: 1) The hopper is fairly small so this is mainly for use on a quarter-acre or smaller home lot size. 2) I purchased fertilizer from my local Ag store and not a Scotts Brand. Called Scotts customer service for help in computing spreader settings on non-Scotts products. Not very helpful as they don't have setting information on other major brands of products. I guess its their way of making it difficult for customers to use other brands.
Cons: Didn't work as expected, Difficult to use

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Scotts Turf Builder Edgeguard Mini. If the deflector is not staying in place, check to make sure that the cable that goes from the on/off switch is tight. If the cable is loose the deflector may move as the spreader moves over the lawn. We do make a larger version of the spreader (Scotts Turf Builder Edgeguard DLX http://tinyurl.com/p5gbynf) the hopper on this spreader will hold up to 15,000 square feet of product and is designed for larger lawns. Unfortunately, we are not able to test all lawn fertilizers with our spreaders. We suggest that you either call the manufacture of the fertilizer you are using or use the following test to find the spreader setting.
Spreader Setting Test: Place enough material in the hopper to cover 1000 square feet. Place the spreader setting on a low setting (usually one-forth of the spreader setting range). Spread the material over a 50 ft x 20 ft area (1000 square feet). If there is material left over, increase your spreader setting. If the material runs out before you finish, decrease the setting. While this is not a scientific method of getting a spreader setting, it will help to make sure that you are spreading enough material on the lawn. Keep in mind that it is better to under apply than over apply when it comes to fertilizers. An over application of any fertilizer can cause damage to the lawn.

I have used this spreader for three years to spread various Scott fertilizers. I have nothing but good to say about the broadcast spreader. With proper care this spreader should last me several more years. Thank you Scott.

Shaft on distribution plate broke from friction

Shaft on distribution plate broke from friction, bought it spring of 2015 used 4 times just broke on me, distribution plate just drops out from under unit. Looks like I'm out $40. On the other side of this I do like the concept of the edge guard less waste and less mess to clean up.
Pros: Easy to Use, Effective, Good Directions
Cons: Didn't work as expected, bad material

After using my Scotts "Speedy Green 1000?", I was reccomended to purchace this Edge Guard Mini to "clean-up" the edges of my lawn last spring. Sadly the setting dial is not accurate, and chose to give it another chance on a later date. I decided to give it another try this spring but adjusted the dial by adding 10% more, now the dispensing was ALOT better! And it did a much better job controling over spread around my trees and driveway.
Pros: Good Directions, Effective, stores nicely!
Cons: inaccurate dispensing dial
I would recommend this to a friend!

for my small lawn (under 1500ft2) this spreader works fine in keeping seed and fertilizer on the lawn and off the sidewalks.
