Backplate to feeder assembly missing?
on July 22, 2024
Posted by: PatBoiler
Jury still out. Purchased six months ago, but this morning was first use. Could not find recommendations for setting, or equivalent to other Scott product settings. Did see all the troubling reviews, the one that solved their problem with Duct Tape was invaluable. Before starting, I looked for the problem. Totally obvious, at the rear drop, there is no backstop to the feed. Used a strip of "masking tape to cover the 1-1/2' by 4" gap to serve as a backplate. Test drove down the street to check the spread pattern. Appeared uniform, no 3" tail down the middle as shown in the complained lawn photos. My guess is the manufacture didn't see that a small backplate is required for assembly. Yeah, spreader doesn't work correctly without the backplate. Design will be modified to use a small plastic strip screwed or pop-riveted to the base. Screw may be a better solution for removing plate for cleaning assembly.
Spreader was modified and appeared to work on the lawn, will need to wait a week or so to validate the solution on the lawn.

Works well with design tweaks
on July 30, 2024

I've been using this for a couple of years now and there are some tricks I would like to share.
1. You can go a little heavy if you follow my suggestions.
2. The wheels are hollow and will accumulate the product you are spreading if you apply while the grass is wet. You will get stripes and dead patches. To solve this, I covered the wheels with gorilla tape on both sides so the product I am spreading doesn't accumulate inside the wheels. Weed and Feed directs you to apply when the grass is wet.
3. Rinse and dry the spreader periodically during and immediately after use. You will also want to lubricate the differential with a lock lube (not WD40, not grease or silicone) this will prevent premature seizing of the differential and keep the internals clean and free of product and dust/dirt.
Several people have to sign off on the design prior to production and sale. The open back wheels are a big design snafu. Great for dry applications, damaging for wet applications.
Be careful out there!

Leaves stripes every single time. First I thought it was me, but after trial and error I finally read other reviews and this is a well documented problem. Do not recommend.

Terrible Drop Spreader
on February 1, 2025
Posted by: Dave 006
Purchased brand new from Scott’s directly. All other complaints are valid. Wheel locks up , so product won’t go thru chute, very cheap. Scott’s did refund me, obviously many issues with this drop spreader. Had my old Scott’s drop spreader for 25 years, they are not made nearly the same anymore.

No documentation. So, guess how to use it

This product has no documentation. So, I will have to discover the correct settings by trial and error. The product label directs you to the Scotts.com website, which has NOTHING at all on it. Where is the documentation?

The spreader settings for your Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader is determined by the individual Scotts product that you're applying and will be on the bag itself so that there is no guesswork involved.

Design Flaw
on April 21, 2025

The design of this spreader needs work. The main problem is the product you're trying to spread hits the inside of the wheels. The right wheel more than left. As the fertilizer, pre-emergent, etc continues to fill the wheels it overflows the lip of the wheel leaving lines of fertilizer in your yard resulting in dark green strips all throughout your yard. It is not spreading the product in an even manner. So you have green lines in your yard for months or you don't get the coverage you need with your pre-emergence more fertilizer. I went as far to cut frisbees and place them on the inside of the wheels hoping it would deflect the fertilizer and not leave the lines which it may have helped some but still have the green lines from build up of fertilizer.

We're sorry you were disappointed with Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader. We recommend checking that the axle and rotor plate are not bent or broken. If either of these parts have bent it can cause product to collect in the wheels. We would like to understand more about your experience and what we can do better. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 877-332-0755.

Edgeguard uneffective novelty

have noticed it is innacurate as far as the settings go. kind of on the lean side of the scale. the edguard features does not work that well. still seems like it is throwing product over/around it. probably a good design on paper but not in the real world. has not broke yet on a large lawn. bought the smaller one to try and cut a corner or two. have used for seeding and fertilizer projects. just set the setting and extra click or so and u will be allright.
Pros: durable so far?
Cons: Didn't work as expected, edge guard feature a novelty more than function
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
