This product is a complete failure.

Using Scotts fertilizer w/o clumps, I struggled to apply to lawn. This new version that replaced my old Scotts, has plastic wheels & shorter mixing impeller. Material just wouldn’t feed correctly. I’m sure the reason is the flimsy drivetrain. I have always been pleased with Scotts products until now. Please tell the design engineers that they may have saved a buck, but will lose customers.

Horrible design- does NOT work

Have exchanged this 3 times already since last year, and am now convinced that it is just a bad design:
1. agitator is too small, and product is constantly clogging up in the hopper bin.
2. does not distribute product at all at any setting below 7
3. when not clogged, product distributes to the inside of the wheels (and cakes up there), not to the lawn which makes for very uneven distribution and creates stripes in my lawn
4. plastic wheels kept falling off (only w the first one already returned/exchanged at Lowes)
5. Edge Guard not reliable ... jams and does not really do anything to control the distribution spread
Have been a loyal customer for years and never had consistent problems like this. Need to start shopping for a new brand of spreader.

Awful spreader

I bought this spreader last June (2022) but never had a chance to use it. I opened it a few weeks ago to spread fertilizer and was excited to give it a try. My old Scotts spreader had lasted 20 years but finally rusted out and the cable open the hatch got stuck.
Out of the box, this new one looked great. I loved the idea of a larger capacity and of the edge guard to keep the fertilizer out of my flower beds.
Well, as soon as I started to use it, that excitement turned to frustration and then turned to anger. For over 3 hours I wrestled with this poorly designed spreader to spread fertilizer on a lawn that usually takes 45 mins max. Why?
1) the edge guard jams up the wheels and prevents them from turning. Not only does this mean I cant
use the edge guard feature, but I had to hold down the handle to keep the edge guard up the whole time. It still wasn't good enough because with every turn of the wheels, they hit the bottom of the edge guard and made a loud clicking sound the ENTIRE time. And with every single bump in the yard, the edge guard would fall down and stop the wheels. This happened every few minutes. I have a hilly yard - I cant just push a fertilizer filled spreader whose wheels don't turn.
2) The settings are completely off. I was putting down Scotts fertilizer that said to use setting 3 1/4. I tried but soon realized that nothing was coming out. I had to turn the setting up to 11 just to get fertilizer to come out!! And when it did, it didn't broadcast it evenly AT ALL. It shot out to one side in clumps and not at all to the other side and only a few feet so I had to try to estimate how far to do my runs.
By this time I was fuming with anger and almost just picked up the fertilizer by hand to spread it. I continued to fight with this stupid spreader until I got the fertilizer down. And resisted just smashing the spreader to pieces in frustration.
3) a few weeks later, my lawn looks like a striped mess. Lines of green and yellow. My lawn does not win awards but it has always been decent. Now, its embarrassing.

I have searched and searched but it seems that Scotts has a monopoly on spreaders. I don't know what to do to replace this one because I no longer trust Scotts products.

We would like to gather some additional information about your experience. Please check that the rotor, gearbox or agitator is not bent or damaged. When applying, if not walking fast enough the spreader will not fling the product properly and therefore will potentially hit the wheels. All of our broadcast spreaders under went a design change at the end of 2020 that changed rotor angle and changed the agitator back to a 2-wing agitator. These changes reduces the potential for the product to hit the wheels.

So disappointed in Scotts info, VERY hard to find info on spreader settings. Most products say check with the spreader maker and Scotts does not bother telling owners the settings for different products. Sorry I bought this unit because I have to guess what setting.

Terrible!!

DO NOT BUY! Axel/Wheels came off after 2 uses, door to release fertilizer gets stuck in the open position often, and fertilizer gets stuck in wheel area causing lines in grass. Its a huge pile of junk and VERY expensive for what you get. I cant name a single thing I liked about this product.

Design nightmare. Do not waste your money!

I bought this with the intention of being able to load the entire bag into the hopper. Was I wrong! I used Scotts Winterizer and as I moved across the yard, the bouncing compacted the product so much that the spinner could not go around. I ended up on setting #9 before I could get enough out. I ended up going around my 12,000 ft space 5 times in order to get it all spread.
