Bad year?

I have used this product for several years with great results. This year is a different story. I purchased 2 (at different stores) of the largest bags. In the past the soil was very rich looking, but light weight, worth every penny. The first bag I purchased this year had large chunks of wood and wires in it. The second bag is the really bad one. It looks like cat hair balls (from either end of the cat) with very little of what looks like actual soil. It appears that it may be from mulched palm trees? I try not to look at it while watering. I can't remember which bag I used to repot an indoor plant, but within a couple days it was covered with gnats. I had to put it outside. What has changed?
Cons: Didn't work as expected
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback.
Some small pieces of back and twigs are intentional components of our growing media. Most of our soils, especially potting mixes and garden soils, are made of composted forest products and contain very little, if any, soil. This provides high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction.

Fungal Gnats!!

The small flying insects are likely fungus gnats. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil), but can be a nuisance. A possible way to control fungus gnats includes allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering, which will help control the larvae. Also, you can try applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants; the larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die.

I used this in my containers this year and have had problems Plants are either too wet or not getting enough water. Hard to balance watering Definitely would not use again unless I mix it with other soil.

The soil should stay moist like a squeezed-out sponge Plants must be monitored weekly for proper moisture level. The texture and draining characteristics of potting soil are not compatible with native soils of the earth. Plant needs fertilizer: All of our potting soils have either synthetic or organic fertilizer mixed with them. For containers that receive frequent watering, where the water runs out the bottom of the pot, or containers chock full of plants, the fertilizer will run out more quickly and need to be supplemented with one of our container foods

You have ruined this product. I used it for my Kimberly ferns at a part time home fo years and they stayed beautiful without watering for a week. Now, they dry out and turn brown in a week. I depended on this product and now I cannot. Please put the moisture back in it.

Fungas Gnats, Mushrooms, and Mold

I re-potted several plants with this soil. Each plant I re-potted now has a serious infestation of fungus gnats which I can't control. The other plants in older, different soil are completely fine and healthy. I've tried sprays, insecticides, soapy drenching, sand, potatoes to attract larvae, etc...Still terrible and filling up fly strips daily.
Also, the plant with the worst infestation has started to grow mushrooms and mold. See the attached photo. Mushrooms growing outdoors aren't a surprise, but I've never had mushrooms grow on indoor houseplants. I water sparingly, once weekly, and the soil doesn't usually seem waterlogged.
I have spent far too much time trying to fix a problem that shouldn't have occurred. I wouldn't use this soil again.
Cons: gnat infested, grows mushrooms
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Do Not Use for Indoor Plants

I have well over 40 house plants and about 20 in my office. I had bought two bags of this product - one for my home and one for my office. I couldn't understand why this winter, I had a problem with gnats in my house that I had never had before. I was told they were from the soil. After finally ridding them for the most part in my house, I started to notice them in my office. Today when I opened the bag in my office, it was filled with these nasty gnats. I would not recommend using this product.
Cons: gnats
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We are sorry to hear about your experience with our Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix. We make every effort to ensure that our consumers receive the best possible product. Our soils are not sterilized and occasionally insects can get into the bags. Fungus gnats are attracted to the fungus and moisture conditions of the soil. They breed very quickly and can quickly become a nuisance if left untreated. Adult gnats can be caught using a small saucer of water and couple of drops of dish soap placed near the plants or a heat source. To stop the breeding process, use a 1/2 inch of sand around the top of the infected containers. The newly hatched gnats are not able to crawl through the sand and will die. Again, we are very sorry to hear about your experience. We do offer a product guarantee. Please contact us using the following link for additional assistance. http://tinyurl.com/7ag7a3n
