Ruined my Concrete
on July 31, 2014
Posted by: hangten
Just like most of the other reviewers this product has completely ruined my concrete in the backyard, sideyard and front yard. We used this everywhere and there are dark orange stains all over the place -- it looks horrible. We've tried numerous products to get this out and nothing seems to get it out. Some products make it slightly lighter with alot of scrubbing but the stains are definitely still there and very noticeable. Thank you very much Scotts for warning us CLEARLY of the potential risks. We are now convinced we will not be able to get rid of the ugly stains and my wife wants to even possibly stain the concrete now. If we do end up staining, the use of this Scotts product may end up costing me thousands of dollars. But, hey the lawn looks good, right?
Cons: Didn't work as expected, Messy, stained concrete
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

We are sorry to hear about the damage to concrete that occurred after using Scotts Green Max Lawn Food. The iron in Green Max Lawn Food may stain as indicated on the back of the label. The quicker a stain removal process is begun, the more effective the process will be. Sunlight and water will help to fade the iron stains from the product on outdoor surfaces, but will not completely remove them. Have you tired any of the following products? While they are not endorsed or guaranteed by Scotts, they have shown to be effective at removing iron stains.
Singerman Laboratories Concrete Rust Remover (only available on-line at The Rust Store) Goof Off Rust Stain Remover Outdoors Super Iron Out Outdoor
We suggest you refer to the product label before applying any product to your concrete. Before using any commercial cleaning products to remove stains, test a small area to make sure the cleaner itself does not cause damage. Most stain removal products work best with two applications.

Never have I been so disappointed in a product made by Scott's as I am with Scott's Green Max. We live in a lovely golf course community where we all keep our yards in exceptional condition. Our new concrete now has orange streaks down the entire length of the driveway and sidewalk. This sure does set us apart from the other homeowners. I feel there should have been a warning on both the front and back of the package in larger print. As a loyal customer, what can you do for us now?
Cons: Messy, Problem with label, turns concrete orange.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I tried this product and loved how well it greened up my lawn. One downfall is it will leave iron marks on sidewalks, so make sure to sweep up any that gets on concrete areas. This product was a complete success and worth a little extra money. I will be using Green Max in future applications.
Pros: Value, Quality, Easy to Use, Good Directions, Effective
Cons: iron colorization on concrete
I would recommend this to a friend!

Stains in pool, deck, driveway, and sidewalk!

Spread some Greenmax using spreader. Used broom & blower to sweep off concrete and deck, but a hard rainstorm washed some into pool and on other concrete surfaces. Now I have multiple stains and blotches. I see from the reviews I'm not alone. Like the others, I'm out money and time, plus worrying whether the stains are ever going to come up.
Cons: Didn't work as expected, Problem with label, stains!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I used it on my yard last sunday and it was watered in good and I applies it like the instructions. My yard looks no different than my neighbors who do nothing and their yard is light green. Also now I have the seed heads popping up everywhere and it looks awful. I love scotts products but not this one!
Pros: Easy to Use
Cons: Didn't work as expected
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I am sorry that you did not receive the fertilizer response that you expected from Scotts Green Max Lawn Fertilizer plus 5.17% Iron. To get the most out of any fertilizer, we recommend that you maintain your lawn with adequate water and regular feedings. If repeated applications of fertilizer fail to green the lawn, we recommend that you purchase a soil test kit to check the soil pH. Soil pH should be between 5.5 - 7.5 for lawns. If it is outside this range, add lime (to raise pH) or soil sulfur (to lower pH) at least once a year in spring or fall. A pH imbalance will prevent the lawn from absorbing fertilizer, even if you apply heavily.

I even purchased the spreader to apply the product. Iron marks on NEW CONCRETE SLABS, Brown patches on lawns. I noticed that the inside wheels have ridges and the product built up to where there was more applied than should be, this could be the major problem, design should be changed on the spreader and the product should be more concrete friendly.
Pros: no pros
Cons: Messy, Didn't work as expected, iron marks, brown patches
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This stained my driveway badly.

I do not recommend this product. The potion of the product that landed on my driveway, stained it permanently. I had to pay a professional cleaner to come out to my house because no matter what I tried I couldn't get it out. Unfortunately, the professional cleaner was also unsuccessful, so now I have a stained driveway and brick pavers. I will never buy this product again. Stick with the turf builder in the summer and the bonus S when temperatures are cooler.
Pros: none
Cons: stains driveway permanently
