[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When my six-year-old Dell Inspiron finally died, I needed a new computer for my business (as a content creator and editor). I'd worked on ThinkPads before, and after doing a thoroughly exhaustive review on the best laptop computers, I decided on the ThinkPad X1, Gen 9. It came with a solid-state drive, which was absolutely non-negotiable (hard drives are okay, but I got used to the speed of the SSD).
Overall, I'm happy with the machine. It's quick, it's light, and it allows me to multitask. My one complaint is the lack of USB ports. That one is on me, as I didn't study the specs closely enough (I thought there were at least four USB ports, which is the case on my older ThinkPad). I bought an inexpensive USB hub, so that took care of the problem. But again, for a purported "business" computer, the lack of USB connections is a little baffling.
So, to summarize -- if you're in the market for a light, fast workhorse laptop, the X1 seems to live up to the hype. But keep in mind the lack of USB ports.
So far nearly everything is as advertised. I've only had it for three weeks but the unit has been running great and is very light weight. The only complaint is the battery indicates that it only charges to 95% and Lenovo support hasn't figured it out for me yet. It is a pricey unit so my expectations are high for the next couple of years. Only time will tell.
