Not bad, but the battery sucks

I've had this watch for a little more than a month now, and I've got only two complaints. First, the sleep monitor is off. Sometimes it says I'm sleeping if I've just been sitting. Even if I'm moving my arms. Fitbit was WAY better at sleep tracking. And second but honestly the biggest problem, the battery life is absolute garbage. It's supposed to last up to 40 hours. I don't know how, unless you literally only use it in watch mode for those hours. I have it connected to my phone for notifications, do not have wifi or NFC on, and have it wake when I move my wrist, but that's it. I literally do nothing else on it and I have to charge it every day. It's a good watch with a lot of features though so if you don't mind popping on the charger every day (I charge mine while I shower) this is a great watch.

One step forward, Two steps back.

The Summary: Get the Gen 3 Galaxy watch, unless you absolutely need the new sensors.
I've had a Galaxy watch since the Galaxy watch 2 and this is by far the most frustrating to use. The advanced sensors are nice, if a bit finicky to use. Other than that, the battery life is sub-par, It slows down to a crawl if you plan on using more than one app at once (like exercise and Spotify), the button positions have been swapped with no option to change them, and I think the overall aesthetic is inferior to the Galaxy watch 3 (admittedly a personal preference.)
The standout issue for me is the performance. I use my watch as a standalone device with wireless headphone when I exercise so I don't have to take my phone with me. If I open Spotify with the workout already started, it takes ages to load anything. I timed it and it took 1 minute and 25 seconds longer to load than my galaxy watch 3. On top of that, if I happen to hit my goals for the day during said workout, then the animation and notification seem to crash either Spotify or the workout - every single time.
On the topic of my old watch: last month I switched back to my Galaxy watch 3 and I'm not going back to the 4. As a point, I never turn in my old devices, I hand them down to my younger siblings after a year, so I have both my nearly 3 year old GW2 and nearly 2 year old GW3 to test against the GW4. Even the 2 is faster than the 4 in the scenario above.
I always thought faster with longer battery life was the was forward but apparently not anymore. Maybe I got a defective unit but Its soured my taste towards the whole "newest model" culture that Samsung and Apple seem to be perpetuating.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Don't waste your time if you're not on a Samsung

If you are intending on using this with a non Samsung phone don't bother. Half the functionality doesn't work and you won't get notifications from apps in a work profile. Apparently everyone else can get this right and function but Samsung can't figure it out or intentionally is screwing those of us that want to use a non Samsung phone. Battery life is laughable, 1 day...really what's the point of offering sleep monitoring if I have to charge the thing all night while I sleep.

A suggestion for Samsung
on February 14, 2022

I have a suggestion for Samsung that if it does, it will most likely triple the sales of its smartwatches.
The design and appearance, and the hardware and software features of the Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatches are really good.
But their batteries are awful. But if the dimensions of the length and width of the Galaxy Watch 4 watches are kept at the same current dimensions, and from the underside of the watch, only one millimeter is added to its thickness,
and The same amount of free space is added to the volume and size of the batteries of these watches, surely their charging time will increase from the current one or two days (which is really annoying) to a week.
And this will be a big trump card against Apple Watches.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Information to get the most out of the Watch4

I am learning a lot about this watch. One thing I can pass onto others, if you want an inactivity alert like other smartwatches (gives you alerts when you have been inactive for a certain amount of time), you have to get the "Wear Stand Up Alert" app. Unfortunately, it is compatible only with the Google Fit app. (Since this is now a Google Wear OS, Google Fit and Samsung Health are both compatible on this watch). This means for all those who still want Samsung Health, you must also run Google Fit so that the inactivity minder alert will work. Also, don't worry about the mention that the inactivity app works best with the bubble software. I got everything working fine without it and the bubble stuff is too complicated if all you want to do is get an inactivity alert working.
I am tied to use both health tracking apps because I need Samssung Health since I swim and Google Fit doesn't track swimming, You can manually take the Samsung Health swim tracking information and enter it into Google Fit, but this can only be done on the phone, not the watch. I also prefer Samsung Health over Google Fit for other reasons such as auto detecting workouts. Google Fit doesn't trigger fast enough for that IMHO.
Concurrently using both methods does drain the battery much faster. In addition, I use the sleep tracking. I am talking lots of battery demand here. Luckily, I am able to get a full day of battery life using both tracking methods only because I am willing to run the watch in grayscale almost all the time. I find I only need color when I am trying to find an app whose icon is still unfamiliar to me till I see colors. Using the watch settings I set the double-finger triple-tap option to grayscale. Without the firmware update, it never triple taps from grayscale back to color. The firmware update fixes this. Also, I can't use Always-On due to trying to minimize battery drain which I can also live without. I get close to a full day of battery life because of these sacrifices.
Even though Always-on is off, turning your watch so that it faces you should automatically wake up the watch. Yeah, don't count on it being reliable. In some cases, this is annoying when I need to use my other hand to tap the watchface to turn on the display. Sometimes, like when I am currently swimming, I just want to glance at the watch, and it doesn't turn on. So having to skip a stroke to turn it on is a pain. Hopefully, Samsung is listening. Please fix this!
Samsung, hey, how about for us smaller watch people giving us better battery life? I would LOVE to have a battery that lasts more than a day!
I did have a watchface on the Watch3 that I loved because of all the fitness and bio information right on the watchface. Unfortunately, this watchface is incompatible with the Watch4 and the developer told me it is due to going from Titan to Wear OS and it will be some time before he can support his watch faces on Wear OS. Sigh.
Lastly, and this should have me knocking the rating down to 3 stars, I am not because to me, this is really about the watch itself. However, the watchband broke already after wearing it only 2 weeks. Since it is still under warrenty, I suspect that Samsung will replace it without blinking an eye. It's just a pain to have to wait for the replacement as I can't wear the watch swimming till one comes in.
Also, I prefer a watchband that can still breath whether I am working out in the pool or outside. Staying damp under the watchband after a workout is not comfortable to me.
So, that's it. Hope this helps someone out there!

Battery life and watch faces

Battery life is a joke. I'm lucky to get through a day with Bluetooth connection 95%of the time. My Galaxy watch 3 would easily go 3 days. Options for high end watch faces are also disappointing and functions of available watch faces aren't even close to what was available for Tizen. The Tizen operating system is far superior. The only reason I bought it was I thought there would be more apps and better functionality, not true at all. I'll try to pawn this off to recoup some money and go back to my Galaxy Watch 3.
