Portable but heavy

I have owned the Pro 22, the Pro 34 and have added the Tailgater to take with us while camping. The new style of control panel takes a bit getting used to. It is very much different in design and function. We bought the Tailgater at the California State Fair and got a very good deal however, the sales rep told us the Tailgater weighed approximately 45 pounds which I have found out is not accurate at all. This unit is closer to 70 pounds. The way the temperature stick inside is wired with a very long lead seems a bit awkward. I took the bottom panel off and threaded the excess wire down and under and zip tied it in place. Without doing this, the excess wire is just bundled up between the smoker barrel and the pellet hopper. Clunky design. Assembly took about 30-40 minutes.

Great smoker

Great little smoker. Perfect size for 2 people but I think we should have gotten a larger one. Found out that if it was bigger, I could smoke multiple types of meat at the same time.

Great little pellet grill. Perfect size for my wife and I. Use it a few times a week and haven’t been disappointed yet.

Great little smoker

Great powerful smoker topping off at 450 degrees. Portable but heavy, hopefully a sign that it is built to last. Unfortunately, I have to fold the legs and lay the whole thing on its side to fit it into the back of my 2021 ram 1500 if I want my bed top to close over it. If it was a literal inch more compact, I’d give it 5/5

Easy to get great results

Kids gave this to us to use with our camper. So easy to get good results that it is getting more use at home than my other, and very good, charcoal and gas grills. My only concern is that I might forget my hard won skills at charcoal grilling!

Throws codes = fails on smoke and lower temps
on November 30, 2024

Cooks fine on high, but when smoking or trying a notch or two up it shuts down with different codes. Happens frequently. Cleaned it out, tested it on high and worked. Guests arrive for a meal and it went out "codes" on hour two of the smoke. Tried a second time the next day just putting in half the pets in the hopper, still threw an error code after keeping an eye on it all day. Restarted it and concern with large temp variances as well, ready to throw this out along with the pellets.

Hi, and thank you for reviewing the Tailgater 20. One of the codes that you may have seen was likely an “LEr”, which is a low temperature error that comes up whenever the grill stays below 125 degrees for more than 10 minutes. As for the other codes, they were all likely related to the same issue and could help determine what caused the grill to shut down. But without knowing exactly which ones were shown, there are several possibilities to consider, potentially being the result of anything from excessive dust in the bottom of the hopper, to a faulty fan or RTD probe. To take the guess work out of the diagnosis, please consider giving Traeger Customer Service a call when you are with the grill. One of our agents can look over your Tailgater with you, and even do a test run to see the different codes you are encountering so that we can determine the exact cause and provide the correct resolution.

No Hassle Grilling

I bought my tailgate pit about 4 years ago. We just love the simplicity and effective operation of this pit. It's great for chickens, ribs, sausage, steaks and even a medium turkey. We use our pit on the weekends and love it!
I would recommend this to a friend!
