Well I have watched my son-in-law cook on his and he has always made great food. Well I was surprised when a big box came to my house. My son-in-law and daughter bought me one. They even sent burgers and fixing with it. Amazing what you can do these days. Anyway I love it. Everything I cook on it turns out great. So easy to get to the temperature you need and it stay there it takes the work out and puts the fun in. Thanks kids. Love y’all and Traeger. It’s going to be a great summer.

It will grill but not smoke meat

The tailgator is great for grilling but thats it. I have had nothing but problems trying to smoke meat. It randomly faults out and losses temp. Shouldnt have to restart it 4+ times. It cant ever maintain a steady temp like if seen green mountain smokers do. As i write this now ive been cooking a pork butt for 12h and only at 170 temp because it losses flame with anything under 300 setpoint.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Tailgater 20. We regret to hear this has been your experience while cooking on your grill. The smoking temperature range is 165-225 degrees F. Traeger grills cook on an average. This means the temperature will fluctuate above and below the set temperature throughout the cook, but the average temperature is very close to the set temp. A home electric oven works in the same way; it just shows only the set temperature; whereas, Traeger grills show the real-time temperature. On a typical, good-weather day, the grill should fluctuate no more than ±25°F/14°C. The most common contributor to any temperature management issue is low-quality or old pellets. Check the pellets at the end of the auger or in the firepot to make sure they have a nice sheen to them and have a nice "snap" to them when breaking. If the pellets crumble or look dull, try a fresh bag of pellets. If you change the temperature too often during a cook, this can cause issues with maintaining the temperature. Instead, give time between changing temperatures so the grill can keep up with the changes. Your grill does come with a 3-year warranty from the date of purchase. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us from 6 AM - 10 PM MT, 7 days a week, and one of our team members will get you squared away.

Nothing low and slow for me!!
on September 29, 2024
Posted by: No low and slow Mark
I can't cook anything low and slow. The minimum temperature the grill will maintain is 250-280 degrees regardless of what temperature I set below that. Set 180 grill maintains a temp of 250-280, set 225 maintains a temp of 250-280. Higher temps above 280 it maintains temperature fine. But I can not anything cook low and slow! So no brisket no pork butt no ribs. Severally limits what I can cook on this grill.....very disappointing I can only cook half the meats I want to!!

Thank you for your review of the Tailgater20. There are several reasons it can run above set temperature from parts installed incorrectly, incorrect startup or shutdown process, part failure or even the weather. Where the grill runs good above 250 the weather can be playing a role. The grill like your car will absorb the heat and be very hot inside. Try moving it into the shade and cooking in the cooler hours. You can learn more about running hot on our support page, or call 1(800)TRAEGER to have one of our agents look at the grill with you.

Great City Solution

Bought for use on balcony in apartment near the beach in LA. The wind outside picks up all the smoke, even when there’s a burst of smoke just starting up, so not scary to neighbors. Amazing pulled pork within hours of opening box.

Hi, and thank you for your feedback on the Tailgater 20. Depending on what is happening with your tray, you may not have to worry about it as much as you think. If the concern is regarding some light surface rust, while this will usually take quite a while to occur, it is not necessary to replace the tray since it never comes into contact with food. If the issue is more related to warping, which can eventually happen over a good bit of time, as long as the grease flows out to the bucket and doesn’t pool on the tray, or end up dripping off to the side, then it shouldn’t be a problem. There is a quick test that you can do to confirm the proper channeling of liquids/grease, which is simply to slowly pour a little water on the highest side of the tray (left side for Tailgater) and verifying that it drains into the bucket. If you prefer, you can even call Traeger support and have an agent help with this test and answer any other questions that you may have.
