Not what was promised

I have been a Traeger fan for years, not my first Traeger, and I have loved all the fun cookout times that I have had.
I bought this grill during the original release, I got in line and felt fortunate enough to get one within a few weeks of the original shipping date.
I have worked in embedded systems development for years, and I got about what I expected when I saw a grill company trying to design an internet of things device, quite a steep learning curve on the part of Traeger, and a lot of patience from me.
I had a unit replaced because of an inexplicable blower fan error. I had a board replaced because the wifi antenna that they designed into it does not have sufficient positive lock and it came loose in shipping. I put up with all of the tunings and retunings of the PID control of the system, either causing the thing to spew smoke for the whole cook, or go out, or backup. I learned to dread the next firmware update, and what new quirks it was going to bring.
A year or so in and I worked through all those issues with Traegers help, much happier now that so many of the firmware bugs were getting resolved, it has been more reliable, and I loved that I could program up my cooks and start them at night and wake up in the morning and expect it to be doing exactly the right thing at the right time. These were fantastic times, and I finally started feeling like I was getting what I paid for.
Then the updates started to get worse. Unannounced database updates making it so my unit wouldn't show up without an app update, obfuscation of the only part of the app that I care about which is to control my grill, nonsensical "improvements" to the UI on the phone just making it harder to do what I needed to do.
Now with the latest app update I can't see my carefully curated custom cook cycles unless i use the manual interface on the front of the grill, and I don't believe that i can trust that to be there the next time I power it on and get an OTA update.
I'm one firmware update away from selling this thing and getting something else.
I've been a die hard traeger fan since I first started but they are making it really hard to stay that way. I still appreciate the patience and responsiveness of their dealers and customer support, but man the app is terrible, and I feel like I am at the mercy of the firmware update schedule. For a top of the line product, this was anything other than a top of the line experience.

Expensive Paperweight

Purchased the Timberline 1300, refuses to connect to WiFi even when basically sitting on the range extender. Trouble shooting instructions on app don’t match grill menu. Dealer says call Traeger and Traeger doesn’t return calls. So disappointing, now stuck trying to deal with this lemon.

67 yr old that cooks outside 200 days a year always gas or charcoal grill kinda guy. We entertain often (20 to 20 guests) purchased a 1300 three weeks ago or 18 meals ago...while I am far from competition ready, not one bad meal has come off of that baby!!! NEVER SMOKED MEAT OF ANY TYPE prior to this journey. Now I’ll never grill again! I am now a smoker! Heck that 1300 while it could be a competition smoker could easily be dubbed “smoking for dummies” put brisket on went played golf, came home wrapped it in foil put it back on the grill, wen inside showered cleaned up guest arrived and eat a dang good brisket that I claimed to have slaved over for hours...till my wife ratted me out and talked about how easy it was! Simply stated outstanding

Avoid this series

We've had this for a couple of years and have to say that it never fails to disappoint our family. First it was the fan turning off in the middle of a cook. That was a great thing to have happen during family bbqs. The customer service sent a new fan and that did not solve the issue. The next part sent was the controller. This seems to have fixed the issue with the fan. Now all there is to contend with is frequent over temps (gets over 500 degrees and has to be shut down) slow ignition warnings and a hopper that doesn't seem to read the pellet level correctly even after calibration. This is our third Traeger and most likely our last. Stay away from them they are not the same as they were even 10 years ago.

Hey there. Thank you for reviewing our Timberline 1300 model grill. We really appreciate your feedback.
If the grill is getting too hot by going into the 500's, it may need to be tested to determine the accuracy of the thermocouple. The best way to find out is with a completely cooled off grill. You'd want to take note of the outside temperature, then when you select your temperature and hit ignite, the grill's controller displayed temperature should be no more than 20 degrees away from the outside temperature, if it's beyond that, you would need a new thermocouple. This would also help your grills temperatures in general, if you had any issues.
With Slow Ignition warnings, for this, we would want to look at how the pellets are being fed by the auger. We would remove all parts from the grill (drip tray, heat baffle, grates) then run the grill to watch the pellet feeding process to make sure it's working right.
The Pellet Sensor we can definitely take a look at with you. We can attempt to calibrate it, and depending on when it was purchased, we could replace it under warranty if it's malfunctioning.
All newly purchased Traeger grills come with a 3-year warranty, and accessories come with a 1-year warranty.
If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 1-800-TRAEGER, and we'd be stoked to assist.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice grill the 1300 but have owned a Lil Tex with a blanket for over 8 years the 1300 takes forever to light and does not get as hot or hold the temp as well as my old grill with a blanket. Need to design a blanket for the 1300!

Overall experience

Every thing has generally been good with my Timberline 1300. Im overall very happy. But a few things i want to mention:
- bamboo cutting board was warped from day one. I have made sure to bring it in when i am not using the grill
- i am still waiting on one of the items I ordered over a month ago, i have had to make all attempts to see when it will be fulfilled. At no point was i given and idea that it was backordered until i called two weeks in. Also no timetable for fulfillment given
There need to be much better communication when i comes to items sold and what is actually in stock in the warehouse..... im no logistician but im sure that with in a day or two of placing an order your fulfillment center knows if its in stock and can simply send an email if its out of stock and an estimate when it will be back in stock to the customer

totally unreliable ....

We have owned this grill for a couple of years, initially it worked well .....has always been kept under an enclosed porch with vented hood over it. All pellet containers and bags have been stored inside our house. For over a year, almost every time we have attempted to cook on the grill, the pellet auger plugs up and we have to take our food off of it and finish is up in our oven inside. We just got our power back on after Hurricane Sally and were really hoping for some grilled burgers !!! About 10 minutes into the grilling ......the grill shut down and my wife had to finish the grilling inside on our stove..............I'm sorry , but, this grill is not reliable to cook anything....................my wife ordered me to pull the grill out and get rid of it !!!! Please, anyone, let me know if you want it ....... you can have it !!!
