Hello, and thanks for your review of the Traeger Ranger. Although all smokers can have some temperatures swings, the maximum variation for this particular model should be 25 degrees. Depending on whether the grill is running hotter, cooler or both, as compared to the set temperature, there may be different possible reasons causing the fluctuations. For instance, if the grill is running hot, especially when you first turn it on, it might be something that can be corrected with a simple adjustment of the startup procedure. While there are a few different things that can be quickly looked at, it is a lot easier to do with an agent on the line who knows all the ins and outs of the grill. When you have a little time, please reach out to Traeger support at 1-800-TRAEGER, and let an agent go over everything with you. You can reach us up until 10:00 PM MT, any day of the year.

Very Disappointed

I received a Treager Trailhead as a Christmas present. I have used it four times and am very disappointed in the results I have had. I have had a Treager for many years and had great results. This grill will not hold temperature. I set it to 350 degrees it heats up then drops down to 300 degrees and will not get any hotter no matter what I do. am getting ready to return grill.

Hello, and thanks for your feedback regarding the Traeger Trailhead. While you can encounter some variation with any pellet smoker, running 50 degrees cool is outside of the expected range, regardless of the model. One of the more common causes of something like this, especially on the smaller, portable grills such as either the Ranger or the Trailhead, is the placement of the food. If whatever you are cooking is too close to the thermostat (the small metal rod that sticks up on the partition between the main part of the grill and the section with the pellets), it can cause the grill to appear to be running cooler than it is because the probe is picking up the temperature of the food, which will always be colder than the temperature that the grill is set to. However, if this is not the case, or you just want to go over the situation with someone directly, you are always encouraged to contact Traeger Support, where an agent will check everything with you and possibly even stay on the line for a test run of your Trailhead. When you have the chance, please give us a call at 1-800-TRAEGER. We have agents available up until 10:00 PM MT, every day of the year.

Beyond Annoyed

Beyond annoyed that this site has no info on taking care or anything towards the ranger pellet grill. No support for this style grill at all, on this website. Don't need info on other pellet grills, need specific support for ranger grill a travel grill that gets turned on its side and moved around that would have specific instructions for cleaning that style.

Hi, and thanks for providing your feedback on the Traeger Ranger. For the most part, the Ranger will follow the same instructions for operation, cleaning, seasoning, etc. as other, larger Traeger models. Even swapping out components is very similar, though the actual parts may look a little smaller. But there are Ranger specific instructions available in the owner’s manual and even on Traeger.com. Just search “Ranger” on our website, then click the SUPPORT link above the results. There you will find a list of articles that are exclusively to the Ranger, and others that include sections that address the portable, tabletop style grills. You can also look at information regarding Arc style controllers, which is the type of control panel that the Ranger uses. If you cannot find the information that you are looking for, you can always reach out to Traeger Support, 365 days a year. An agent can answer any questions you might have and even provide you with links to related articles on various topics.

Response from traegergrills.comBy Traeger GrillsTraegerMay 8, 2024
Hi, and thank you for your feedback on the Ranger Portable Grill. Without knowing the details, it is difficult to say what specifically could be causing the problem. However, if it is simply not turning on, there are only so many things that it could be. Assuming the outlet and cord are not responsible, it may just be a blown fuse on the control panel (there should be a spare attached). If this is the case, you’ll want to do a quick component test after replacing the fuse so that you don’t just blow the new one on the next attempt. Although there are steps for doing this on the Traeger.com Blown Fuse support page in the “Determine What Caused the Blown Fuse” section, it is usually easier to perform the test with someone on the line from Traeger Support. There are agents available every day of the year who can help with this, or any other concern you have with your Ranger, so do not hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-TRAEGER up until 10:00 PM MT, any day of year.

I cannot get this grill to maintain temperature. If it's windy outside, forget using it.
Response from traegergrills.comBy Traeger GrillsTraegerOctober 4, 2024
Thank you for your review of the Ranger. Temp issues can be caused by different factors such as pellets, start-up to ventilation and weather. You can learn about temp issues in portable grills on our support page, or call 1(800)TRAEGER and one of our agents will assist you.

Worth it, great portable smoker
on November 2, 2024

I bought this several months ago and it working great. It’s not a full size smoker so don’t expect the same controls but it does a great job for what it is. I take this to Elk camp to all my friends gathering and smoke a variety of things with excellent results. Because it’s so small it does tend to get hotter than the set temp, this is an easy solve if you are monitoring with a MEATER prop. I’ll vent off a little heat and drop the temp on the controls down. Finding that sweet spot for your target temp of 225 is right about 215 depending on outside temperatures. Also make sure to clean your temp sensor. Overall I would say it come close to replacing a full size unit, but it won’t get you the same cooking space. Worth the money in my opinion if you want a portable smoker
