However, if it mostly damaged the lid and got hot enough to burn the coating, it is likely that the fire was grease related. To prevent something like this from happening, there are a few simple precautions that can go a long way for keeping your grill safe. The first is making sure that any covering on the drip tray, whether it is a tray liner or aluminum foil, is in good condition, completely flat and not hindering grease flow. Additionally, it is also important that the grill is regularly maintained so that grease and soot are not allowed to build up on the interior walls and grate. Even what might seem like dry, harmless particles and residue could liquify and ignite during a cook.
