it should be a crime to use micro usb in 2026

I've been waiting forever for Biolite to upgrade this to USB c. But it doesn't look like they will. A lot of their other products have it. So you have to make sure you bring a micro USB cable with you.
If this fix this one silly issue then this would be 5 stars. Literally this light is incredible

Thanks for the feedback. We hear you on USB-C, and we love it too. That’s why our newer products, including recent headlamps and lanterns like the Alpenglow Mini, use USB-C charging. As we continue to introduce new products, USB-C is the standard we’re moving forward with.
Some earlier products were designed with micro-USB at a time when it was the most widely used charging standard, which helped keep products accessible and compatible across the BioLite ecosystem. We understand that carrying a separate cable isn’t ideal.

Exactly what i was looking for and so much more. I was in search of some sort of light to use for a night light for my kids in there tent when we went camping. Well, the alpenglow is perfectly! It not only fit my need, it delivers so much more. We have used the candle flicker when sitting out side, star gazing. We have used it as a lantern at the fire pit, we even used it as a accent light at a baby shower (set it to pink to welcome our new niece). The fact is, it has so many functions you will be finding all sorts of great ways to use it you never even considered. If you want a bright base light, a low light to set the mood, a colored fade to calm your kids, or a multi changing party light on the go, the alpenglow has you covered. Period.

Overall this lantern does exactly what it advertises and well. The “shake weight” feature works well and is quite accurate. The AlpenGlow 500 feels lighter then the BioLite lantern/flashlight combo which has been my go to for powering my site lights in my tent. The 500 is much larger in width but the same height. Personally for Backpacking (which is what I do) I would pick up the smaller AlpenGlow, and use this one more where size and weight aren’t an issue. If you wanted a good lantern that’s very feature packed, I highly recommend this, especially with the ChromaReal colors.

I want to let everyone know how Fantastic this AlpenGlow 500 is in an emergency. We recently had tornadoes that came through our community, notably our neighborhood. The electricity was out for three days. We started using the AlpenGlow 500 while we where down in our basement during the storm. When the storm was over we continued to use the lights. The amount of light these AlpenGlow 500 lights are amazing but also all the fun colors help lightened the mood. My Husband would take the lights to work to recharge them so we could use them at nighttime. I would definitely purchase more of these lights to use as presents and also preparedness.

Terrible battery life

We bought this for camping and have found that it doesn't last long at all. Only really long enough to cook and eat dinner before it needs recharging. It takes forever to charge as well so definitely find a different lantern.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

i've been digging BioLite product since its inception. seriously. Design, quality of build and overall smart function meets design is a winner. Purchased AlpenGlow 500 and it arrived with an instructional video. Nice... yet why a video? Answer: because there are so many things the light will do. Without getting totally granular, here's my pros and cons of the AlpenGlow 500: PROS: Solid build, sturdy as ALL of the other BioLite products are. Battery last ridiculously long.. even on bright mode. Dig the small concealed handle atop (to hang in tents, trees, misc.). CONS: 1) AlpenGlow 500 uses a micro USB.. Why? Should be USB C as almost ALL smartphones and laptops are USB C enabled, plus USB C powers faster. 2) There are so many modes to turn the lights on, you'll need a video to remember it. Trust me, I can't even remember how to enable the multi color mode. This leads to 3). Less is more. Get rid of the 8 ways to enable different light modes.. make it SIMPLE. Yes, it's cool yet it simply takes too much time to remember these steps. Lastly, folks, bravo for this product and it' lil sister AlpenGlow 250 yet I truly believe you've taken two steps back and one step forward ;-)

Great Product With One Fatal Flaw

This product is great! The light is beautiful, the color options are fun, and it's easy to use. The only problem is that the female charging port fell out and into the device. I could hear it rattling around inside the plastic casing and could no longer charge it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
