Every New Parent Needs One For The Nursery!

I have used our AG500 for several things over the past few years of owning it. Camping, sitting out back on the porch, center table piece for dinners and hangouts. It's clutch for all the above-mentioned scenarios. With that said, until 3 months ago, when my wife and I had our first baby, we never really knew its ultimate purpose...the Nursery Light! This thing has been clutch in our baby's room. It's mobile so we can move it to the chair for bedtime stories. We can have it at the changing table through the night for those late-night/early-morning changes. Soft yellow light for winding down, red light for the times we need to change her but not try to wake her up. It's a game-changer for sure. Every parent of a young child needs this light in their nursery. You will not regret it.

I like the little thing, but it won't be my go-to battery light source except in special circumstances. I'm more into practical features than multi-mode lighting. So I think the AlpenGlow 500 doesn't hold a candle against my BaseLantern XL (pun intended).
The lighting is good and the different modes are cute. Heck, even the size is cute. It doesn't weigh much, which, while nice, means the battery isn't big. That means you can't use it as a lantern for long AND expect to charge your phone, power external BioLite string lights, etc. For example, a fully-charged AlpenGlow would be exhausted by charging my iPhone 8 3 times.
One thing I REALLY like is the hanging hook in the base (instead of a closed loop). I used it for chores the other day specifically because of the hook and it all worked beautifully. I even used the half-side light mode so the full light didn't shine in my face.
I like the single button on top, but the shaking for mode variations is a little gimmicky? I'm a techie, but I'll have trouble remembering when to shake to get fireworks mode when I use this again in a month.

The main reason I picked this lantern was for its large internal battery (much larger than the competition) and brightness. At 500 lumen it feels like old gas lamps I used to use and with the warm glow option it looks them too. I was tired of inflatable solar lanterns leaking, breaking, and not charging fast so I wanted something that could last a long time and be recharged easily with USB while driving or with a battery bank. The glow of the lantern is very even and no hotspots to blind you. Light falloff is gradual making the usable area of light more than enough for a picnic table, tent, car camp area, room, etc.
It has a few quirks like flickering when turning on or changing brightness, and I would prefer another button to the shake feature. It's very lightweight and I almost feel it could be slimmed down or gain an even larger internal battery. I'm curious to see how the translucent plastic shell holds up over time with camping and hiking use; scratches and scuffs might reduce the light transmitted through the shell or impact its evenness. A retractable handle or slots for a strap would be nice as I like to use it while walking sometimes; it's easier to see the night sky and hike using a handheld warm light lantern vs a headlamp.
I've used this for photoshoots and night photography and the color options are nice to play around with. I enjoy the flickering campfire/candle mode and use it often at home. The randomization of the flicker could be improved for a more natural look but hopefully that can be done with a firmware update.
Overall this is currently the best LED camping lantern on the market when considering the best combo of size, brightness, durability, and battery life. I'm happy I bought it as it will get heavy use in my outdoor photography business.

Love this thing. I've used it a lot and one lantern is bright enough to provide enough light for cooking dinner in the great outdoors (especially paired with a headlamp). It is hard to find gear in this industry that gives the priority to WARM white light that it deserves. I can't stand harsh, full-spectrum white light. And most LED lanterns offer nothing but. The colors on this badboy are where it really shines. Fantastic warm hughs, both bright and dim, and wonderful fun colors for party time. My only complaint is that it does not have USB-C. I am trying to switch all my devices over, since USB-C is the future and is vastly more convenient. It was painful to discover that this useful piece of kit isn't hip to the new way. I hope gen 2.0 adds USB-C right away! The lantern is valuable enough that I'm going to keep it, and would recommend it to a friend, but please give it the best connector for the future!

Have been running the light at warm medium all month at night without a recharge, truly impressive. The thing I like the most is that at full brightness this light is really very bright and the warm light setting is the best of all lights I have tried. It’s easy on the eyes, creates a beautiful setting. This light is solid all around! Highly recommend. Just for full disclosure I like them so much I own 10 of them.

This is my second AlpenGlow 500. They make ideal night lights, perfect for midnight trips to the bathroom or kitchen, without having to turn other lights on. While all the settings are very cool, the candle flicker is my favorite- and the charge lasts forever on that settting!
