Ok but not great

We purchased this dishwasher to replace our previous midline one that really was a workhorse. We were hoping it would be just as good or better with the extra sprayers but even with a light load in the wash we have to run it on heavy cycle always. So, it does clean but not as well as we had hoped.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

My older dishwasher sounded like a jet plane was landing in the kitchen. i could only run it when i was leaving for work in the morning because it was so loud and clunky. the new one is SO quiet i cannot even hear it running. and it gets everything clean :)
I would recommend this to a friend!

everything is fine except the top draw pull out system because of the poorly designed utensil trays

Not Like My Old One
on July 15, 2014

My last dishwasher was a GE and I was so happy with it for 16 years that when I had to replace it, I chose another GE. The dishes simply don't get as clean in this new one, from the silverware to the glasses. I have tried a couple of different detergents, but to no avail. I guess they just don't make them like they used to! I'm very disappointed in this model.

Never disliked a GE until now

We've had this machine for several months now and I hate it with a passion. I've always had GE appliances and have always loved them. But, on this machine, the detergent door usually does not open during the cycle so I have to wash the same load up to 3 times. I've tried all the remedies, I don't put anything anywhere near the detergent door, I use temp boost, I've raised our water heater temp, I even use the steam feature. Sorta defeats the purpose of Energy Star once you've done all that just to get the detergent to dispense. It's already hard to get more than a few things in each load due to the way the tines are set up. Not only can I not put anything in front of the detergent but I can't put anything in front of the silverware baskets either. The silverware baskets don't allow for the items to get clean. The baskets nest the silverware and they leave a ring where they touch the items. The cycles take too long and it seems to be getting louder over time. Hopefully this is just a lemon but it's a poor design also in my opinion. I really think GE should exchange this machine for us.

Very quiet but soap dispenser does not open
on July 24, 2014

I had this dishwasher installed about six months ago. I'm pleased with the quiet cycles which was the reason I wanted a new machine. I am not pleased that the soap dispenser does not open half the time causing me to re-wash the dishes thus causing me expense of hot water for another full cycle. Because of that reason, I would not buy it again.

REVIEW OF GE GDF540HGDWW DISHWASHER
on July 30, 2014

from Poway, CA, United States
SUMMARY: Several Installation problems, good dishwasher once it's installed.
INSTALLATION: The manual installation steps are out of order and incorrect. For example, it has you mount the dishwasher in its final position and then tells you to hook up the hoses and electrical connections! No way! It has to be about 1/4 of the way out so you can get at the connections. A strain relief is needed for power cord installation and NOT SUPPLIED. The dishwasher had 1 bent leveler (the adjustable height foot on each corner), indicating poor Quality Control. I chose to accept it as I could still adjust it.
DISHWASHER FEATURES AND PERFORMANCE: The best feature is the silverware baskets on both upper and lower racks. You can remove one if you need the extra room and still fit an average load of silverware in the remaining basket. Another good feature is the ability to raise or lower the upper rack. It does an excellent job of washing (I use powdered detergent), and the Heated Dry does a good job (although I usually don't use it and just air dry after it's finished). The noise level is quite low (similar to a quiet refrigerator). The 2/4/8 hour time delay works but 1 hour steps would be more convenient.
I would recommend this to a friend!
