Too hot, poor battery life, unstable Wi-Fi driver
on April 15, 2022
Posted by: vadimkantorov

The laptop is too hot, keys are too hot to hot. The lap is getting too hot quickly. Battery life is more like 5 hours (without any serious load) as opposed to advertised 12-14 hours. Wi-Fi driver occasionally hangs Windows11, doesn't work with some Wi-Fi networks
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello there, vadimkantorov,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review in regard to your XPS 2-in-1 Laptop. We are sorry to hear about the issues you came across with overheating, wi-fi, and battery runtime. We have suggestions that can help with improving the system temperature and the battery life of your laptop.

1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat, and can cause permanent damage.
3. It is recommended to use the portable system at a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
6. Make sure that your computer's Drivers and BIOS are completely up to date. This will help regulate your system's temperature and help with performance.
7. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

so far, so great

I am just a few days into my new laptop, but it has performed flawlessly and its thermals have been great. I'm impressed with the build quality as well. I do think that thermal performance has been improved from the 9300 vs 9310 and Tiger Lake has provided a performance upgrade (r20 score of 2063 on optimized setting).

XPS13 developer edition good, some tuning missing
on November 1, 2020

Overall good, and I realize it's a developer edition, so I needed to tune a few things. Performance wise Dell doesn't give you much (e.g. with tlp and cpufreq I was able to get geekbench5 to go from 1050 to 1450). The WiFi6 is disappointing. My older X1Y5 thinkpad gets a solid 80-100MB/sec, but this Dell is very flaky (30-60 MB/sec).
I love the symmetric USB-C (this would have been a dealbreaker for me), but I miss the mouse pad buttons as I'm used to thinkpads. I also don't like the Fn on the left, I'm used to Ctrl on the left. They are hard (impossible?) to remap in linux. Maybe I can find it in the BIOS.
The bright 500 nits screen is fantastic for outdoor.
I had a few mysterious lockups via the window manafger (i'm used to KDE), which I could only solve with a reboot.
I didn't see a fingerprint login option, but I prefer not to use that anyways (think border control).
The screen does not fold flat like all my thinkpads. This one stops at 150 deg or so. Also the hinge is not as stiff as I would have liked.
Nice to see the newer 5.6 kernel, all current LTS ubuntu's are using 5.4
There was no keyboard protector (this prevents fatty imprints into the screen after some months). I plan to keep a running log of my experiences on a public website.

Disappointed. So much potential.

Experienced unplanned shutdown and restart twice in the first 72 hours with a message upon starting back up that says "It looks like Windows didn't load correctly". This was unacceptable for such an expensive product so I just returned it.

Hello Ken,

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear about your experience. Below I have provided steps to perform a hard reset. We also recommend running a hardware diagnostic test. I have provided the link below.

1. Power off the laptop. Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter or power cord, and remove the battery.
Note: For Dell laptops that have a non-removable battery, see the Dell knowledge base article How to reset Real Time Clock (RTC) to recover your Dell XPS, Dell Latitude, or Dell Precision laptop.
Note: For certain Dell Latitude laptops, we recommend you try and recover the laptop using the forced ePSA method. See the Dell knowledge base article How to Use Forced ePSA to Recover from POST or Boot Failure.
3. Disconnect all external devices or peripherals like USB drives, printer cables, and media cards (SD/xD).
4. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain residual power.
5. Connect the AC adapter or power cord and the battery.
6. Power on the laptop.

Hard drive failure after three weeks
on November 12, 2020

Utterly disappointed. My new XPS 13 9310 laptop had a fatal hard drive failure exactly three weeks after delivery, despite being used only a handful of times, handled carefully and kept it in its case at all times. Ten days later, a replacement hard drive was shipped without Windows. Still unable to start or use product.

The best in form factor and performance!

Excellent performance in an extremely small profile. Screen is amazing, feels 4k like in sharpness and excellent brightness. CPU is extremely zippy and battery life is amazing. An amazing upgrade over my 10th Gen HP Omen. The evo platform and amazingly quick starts make it almost tablet like in ease of use. My only knock is that I have to remember my dongle for HDMI otherwise this is really the most perfect iteration of an XPS I've ever had.

The exceptional laptop with a minor flaw..
on November 12, 2020

This is a laptop of exceptional quality, and the design is no exception. Every part about it it beautiful, from the tiny bezels to the aluminum chassis. The only thing, is the software. Sometimes, when I'm typing, the screen will start flashing colors, and flickering. When that happens, I have to reboot the device, and it goes away. This was a minor problem at first, but it is starting to happen more frequently which is slightly annoying. That was the only thing holding me back from giving this a five star review. Well, the laptop does get slightly warm, but sometimes I actually enjoy it if I'm cold. Overall, this is a great laptop, and I recommend it even with the flashing colors. If it gets worse, I'm crossing my fingers that dell support will help me solve this problem or get me a replacement.

Hello OGrin,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue with the battery. Below I have provided steps that should resolve these issues.

1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.
2. On the options list, click Power Options.
3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built-in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You can enable or disable this mode within settings, or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.
a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
b) If running Cortana, then type Battery Saver into the search box and choose from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to meet your needs best.
c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
d) Additional settings are available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize additional Battery Saver feature.
