Awesome build... elevator keeps failing
on August 9, 2020

I bought this set the second it was available. I was so excited for this to come. I’m upset to give this a low score because I really love this build. The set is amazing! The only problem I had was the elevator. It worked fine at first then started giving me a problem about a week in. When I got the hub and additional pieces for it, I rebuilt the elevator. But unfortunately after a while I ran into the same problem. It truly is a haunted house haha. But even with the problems I would recommend this set to friends. Out of all the sets I’ve built this is still my favorite.

We're sorry you’re having some difficulty with the elevator. We always test and retest our toys to make sure that they’ll hold up to play when they’re built exactly as shown in the instructions. If a part of your set ever seems like it's not very sturdy, the best thing to do is double-check your build. Sometimes there may be a piece just a little off from where it should be. You’ll also want to make sure that all the pieces are pressed tightly together.
If you'd like a hand troubleshooting the build, or if you find that any pieces aren't holding together as they should, feel free to give us a shout at LEGO.build/Service-BV and we'll be happy to help.

Haunting, but...

The house is an interesting (if repetitive) build with lots of very cute details, e.g., the pipe organ, the changing picture, the window and wall decors, etc. The elevator -- the centerpiece of the model -- is finicky; it started to work only once we set the chain length exactly to the 174 links required and thus stretched the chain almost to the breaking point. Alas -- it does work.
Manual operation of the elevator is tedious and mostly boring. Using a hub and motors required using the Powered-Up app and that is a disgrace. Maybe there are instructions somewhere, but we simply could not find them. "Cute" sound effects don't make up for grinding noises if the motors are connected backwards (no instructions...), and even if they are plugged in properly the elevator often gets stuck half way between top and bottom. There are lots of buttons in the app; however, most of them seem to have no effect, the icons are too small to be intuitive, and the sound effects get annoying very quickly.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Worst lego I've ever bought

Total waste of money. Roof pieces near impossible to attach properly. Rest of build crumbles as you try to attach or pieces pop off of the roof pieces. I love Lego and have built a ton but this was a nightmare. Worst design and instructions I have ever seen from Lego.

This was my first Lego build and it was a blast. Bummed out I haven't started it years ago. Knocked it out in 12 hours. The detail is awesome and the elevator works beautifully.

Highs and Lows (haha get it)

This is a very interesting and fun set to build. Agree with other comments that the printed pieces are superb and the set does not become too repetitive despite the window assemblies being largely the same. The mechanism that lifts the elevator is not as smooth as it could be for a set this size and this price. I doubt I'll hook it up to Power Functions because the carriage that lifts the car tends to get hung up and you have to lift it with your fingers. When it hangs up, it's a lackluster experience, especially compared with some of the other amusement park sets. It would have been fun to have the car slide into and out of the elevator carriage on a track, a modification I might make later. The Easter eggs from the Adventurers series were lost on me so I had to look them up. I didn't particularly like that the antiquities in the home were stolen artifacts, even though it describes the Baron as evil and it seems that the artifacts cursed him in the end. Still, I felt the backstory seemed to glorify the theft of antiquities by white men. I'm sure Lego didn't intend for that, but it bothered me as part of the backstory of the set.

We're sorry to hear that your elevator isn't working as expected. From what you describe, it's likely something a little off in the build. A part out of place, a gear too tight, or regular pieces not pressed together tightly enough. A little rebuilding should do the trick.
If you need a hand troubleshooting the build, you can always get in touch at LEGO.build/Service-BV.

Enjoyable Build

Bought this kit because it looked awesome and was not disappointed. Shared progress through my social media account with friends and received a good amount of positive response. I can’t wait to disassemble the kit and rebuild it. My only gripe (very minor) was the 300+ links for the elevator chain but sometimes you just have to pay to play. I would highly recommend this kit.

This is another modular that i didn’t care for. I wish there was more detail on the inside and some hidden features. It’s a haunted house but it’s not scary

nice to look at but not functional

I have collected and built many lego gothic strictures including the lego Isengard, the Disney Castle all of the monster fighter sets and the many new Hidden side sets and Hogwarts sets. This was was a great fun to build and its interior is a work of art. However try as I may I was not able to get elevator to work properly - the chain as noted by a another reviewer constantly snapped . oh well it will make a great residence for my Doctor Strange or a Vampire mini figure

We're sorry to hear you've had trouble getting your elevator to work. There are three things you'll want to double-check:
First, make sure that your build's exactly what's shown in the instructions. If a part is a little out of place, that can put too much tension on the chain. Everything should also be pressed tightly together (except gears, which need a little room to turn).
Second, check the length of your chain. You might have some spares of the little chain links, so make sure you have the right number. 148 works for most builders, but depending on how tightly together your build is, you may need 149.
Third, make sure all those small chain links look A-Okay. If one's broken or a little bent, it might not hold like it should. If you need to request a replacement, just go to LEGO.build/BricksPieces-BV.
If you need more help troubleshooting the set, get in touch at LEGO.build/Service-BV.
