A 90s Throwback in both Theme and Build
on September 9, 2021
Posted by: Mawgim
This was a fun surprise! My wife and I decided to get this as we didn't have any type of Lego Halloween display.
When we bought it, we thought it'd be similar to a modular style type build, but surprisingly it wasn't. The doll-house build made this all the more unique. The 90s references with The Adventurers theme made us both incredibly happy, and the functionality of the tower drop and light brick make this one of our favorites.

Like many others but I may have solved one problem
on April 14, 2021

I hate that I have to write a review but I want to help a few folks with a solution I found to one problem. I, too, built this to specs, only to find the clicking, the jamming and more when it came to the elevator.
However, I think I stumbled on a partial solution - carefully remove one chain link. The tighter the chain, the less it clicks and it catches the gear better. I'm at one less than the specs in the instructions today. Tomorrow, if it continues, I'll see if I can take out just one more and have it still hold. I worry, long-term, that this will stress more links and they will wear out. LEGO might have to always make those links and never retire that element. The elevator still doesn't perform at 100%, more like 75%.
The braking structures do not work automatically. Somehow those need to be reworked. Everything's tight, all gears and wheels are as they should be but there's just something missing from it all to make it work well. I won't buy a Hub to automate this until it works manually. That'd be a waste. I'm not sure it will work manually, ever, without my bringing in a lot of spare pieces from other sets.
For the doors at the top of the tower, they take jimmying and even adding one more stud to each of the poles to make them fit into the roof without falling over. These are actually the worst doors I've seen on a set - same with the House's front doors. The door construction itself is too flimsy. That needs to be shored up.
LEGO needs to send an Update pack to buyers, similar to how Apple, Windows or other software does an update (rather than how auto manufacturers recall the vehicle). It needs to have pieces to cover exposed and unsightly studs and above all, needs a chain redesign. Those links are not designed to hold up long turn and cannot take too much stress. Another gear or pulley system needs to be put in that's more sound.
Fragile structures, such as the doors at the top of the tower, need to be redesigned. There's no reason pieces should fall off, jamming the elevator shaft. I can't let me daughter touch it at all - she breaks pieces off, too. It's not her fault, the set is just flimpsy.
Like others, I've a HUGE gap between the roof aspects and the wall structures underneath each. It's unsightly. I'll have to figure out how to improve that design.
I've put together LEGO for more than 35 years now. This is the first set I've ever built that is so incredibly fragile. Had I known, I might have chased after the Haunted Castle from Hidden Side before it sold out. This isn't user error - when so many people have the same problem it's down to design flaws, no matter how many times it was tested.

Beautiful set but elevator needed more work

As many haver reported, the elevator (which is the big payoff for this build) is finicky and just not designed well enough to work consistently. It is too much friction for the chain to move past the wheels. We improved things some by shortening the chain by al ink or two but it is still hit or miss. I think Lego should at a minimum include some troubleshooting tips in the booklet.

Elevatoris a Minus
on September 24, 2020

I got this set for my grandson and myself. I basically like it, but the elevator gets stuck going up the shaft. If you try pushing the crank a little harder, the chain breaks apart, which is a real pain to correct. We have to take the roof off to stick a dowel into it, to push the car back down. The crank is rather flimsy, and comes off easily. After the first build, I figured something must have been put together incorrectly, to cause the elevator to malfunction, We took it apart down to the foundation, and rebuilt the entire thing, but no joy, nothing changed. You really can't use the elevator, and since this was a selling point for us, it's very disappointing. On top of that, there were a few pieces missing, which we were fortunately able to find substitutes for out of our stash. This is unusual, only a few sets out of the many we have are missing pieces. Because of the elevator issue, I would not buy this set again. Perhaps it wasn't tested in Quality Control enough.

Excellent set with many “Easter Eggs”. Great play features. The build isnt bad but builder needs moderate expierence. The ride function only works flawlessly if you are really careful building ( aligning parts and giving technic parts some “play”. careful builders will be rewarded with flawless action feature which is great.

Fantastic Set, Frustrating Lift
on June 15, 2021

This is one of my absolute favorite Expert sets. I love all of the detail and references to some of the classic Lego sets of the past. The printing on the minifigures is some of the best I've ever seen. However, I'm a tad bit disappointed with the lift. I rarely every use it because the chains often slip off the gears due to their size. The cart makes most of the drop but stops right before it fully completes it. I have to push it the rest of the way down which causes the gears to grind. Despite its many flaws, this is a great display piece and makes an excellent addition to my collection.

We're so happy you love the Haunted House set! The issue you're having with the lift might be caused by the gears being too tight. Try loosening them just a bit and it should be all set! If that doesn't help or you have questions, please let us know with a call to LEGO.build/Service-BV. We're here to help!
