Great product

A classic Lego build that leaves you hoping it never ends. My only complaint is that the mechanics/instructions of the elevator is confusing to a semi-newbie. The elevator works, don’t get me wrong, but I sat there for 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do because the instructions did not click in my head as to how this was going to work. Overall, an amazing product for the season!

this is a beautiful and challenging build. It has a nice mechanism and super fun to play with .my cat loves to watch the elevator go up and down .The details and the color coding is amazing. The organ is beautifully designed and the painting is cool. it is easy to store .it is fun for my Kids to play with .I wish I could be a minifigure and go inside it .

An absolute MUST

I have so much good to say about this set. Firstly, I'm a huge fan of haunted houses, and this pulls off the look incredibly well. The color scheme works great for it as well. All of the easter eggs from the old Adventures themes were a great touch, too. I loved that they also included back stories on all the artifacts in the instructions as you built them. The pipe organ mini build is easily my favorite that I've seen, and I appreciate the clever use of the light brick for the photo above it. The elevator function is really fun to mess with as well. I saw on a lot of reviews, people mentioned they had chain issues. I didn't seem to have the same problem, but it was sort of tricky to get the car to start going up the elevator sometimes. I think it has to do with all the wheels used to slow the car down, but its easy to work around. It's also worth noting that this build is pretty repetitive at times. This didn't bother me, personally, but it may feel tedious to some. But for those of you who hate stickers: this set has none! It was fairly refreshing to build such a massive set without having stickers to break the pace up.
In all, this set is without a doubt worth every penny, and is one of my new favorite sets of all time, along side Hogwarts Castle, the Tree House, and the UCS Slave 1. It is absolutely HUGE (I'll include a photo of it next to the Hogwarts Castle set just to give you an idea of its size), and is a joy both to look at and play with. For those of you wanting it now when it's out of stock, check your closest Lego store. I lucked out and found some at mine, and snatched it immediately. It was such a pleasant surprise, because I wasn't expecting to get this for quite some time.

Great Looks, Poor Functionality
on August 29, 2020

I knew that I wanted this set as soon as Lego released images of it. It's huge, it's impressive, and it appeared to have everything that would make this set epic. As I put it together, I was thrilled with just how great this set was- and how awesome it was in terms of design, attention to detail, and just overall looks. I was extremely satisfied with the build... until I was finished and tried the elevator mechanism. The mechanism that many seem to have trouble with- but Lego continues to say is just builder error.
I've been building Legos for a long time. I have quite the collection- including many epic Technic sets like #42009, #42100, and more recently, #42114. I've also built all of the Creator Expert Modular buildings- some of which include some tricky design elements. I've never, ever had issues related to mechanisms not working correctly once built. I've never had to take parts off and redo them because something didn't work right... until the Manor Von Barron. Somehow I was able to put together the much more complex Lego Liebherr R9800 Excavator without making a mistake... but faced issues with getting this relatively simple building together? Issues that continue to plague the model despite many attempts to rebuild its components?
It seems like the elevator mechanism can't handle the weight of the elevator car when it's passing by the wheels that provide the braking feature that's used during the car's decent. When you turn the lever on that raises the car- the model clicks loudly as the gears slip. Eventually the car slowly is raised up the tower- but the action is slow and clunky. Once it passes the brake wheels- the clicking isn't as often. That slipping/skipping of gears completely ruins the 'wow' factor of this model.
Many reviewers have complained about the clicking/skipping issue- and Lego just tells them to rebuild. I have. I've rebuilt the.tower twice. I've rebuilt the gear mechanism a few times. I ensured that every piece was put together perfectly to avoid problems with the elevator car getting caught as it moves up the tower. I've added links to the chain. I've taken a few out.
Nothing improves the clicking noise / skipping problem. It's almost like the chain and gear design aren't strong enough to lift the weight of the car. Maybe Lego should have used a larger chain or more robust gear design.
If only one or two people were complaining about it, builder error would be an appropriate assumption... but when many reviewers have alerted Lego to this problem- and YouTube reviewers (including Lego superfans) are all experiencing the same problem... then you know it's a design problem and not a builder problem.
Unfortunately, that means that this Lego is just an awesome exterior/interior building. The ride function would have made this an epic set. Unfortunately, considering the somewhat consistent problem that many reviewers are complaining about with the elevator- this set is just good, not great or epic. It looks good on a shelf, but the coolness of showing the ride function off to friends is overshadowed by the embarrassment of the very loud skipping of the gears and inconsistent functionality of the elevator function.
Other than telling people to rebuild their sets or to call the phone number for support (and be put on hold for an hour)- will Lego offer any other support or a reworked design for people who have paid a good chunk of change for this set? It would be nice.

Disappointing Haunted House
on November 21, 2020
Posted by: Audio
This is one of the very few lego sets I have ever purchased that I did not enjoy building. As some others elsewhere have noted, this is not really a haunted house, but a faux haunted house built around the elevator ride. The brick light used for the back light image is very fun and a great feature. However, the build itself is repetitive and mostly the same, the interior elements are a bit juveinelle (the Monster Hunters haunted house was far superior), and the build felt wobbly as pieced together. The roof pieces provided a significant amount of frustration and provide a minimal "look" of finished.
As for the elevator, I did not have some of the same issues others described, but the wheel mechanism for mine never allows the elevator to come all the way down. Having built all the window sections over and over for the majority of the tower made me just want to be done with the project.
Unless you are very interested in the elevator ride mechanism as the main feature, this is a lackluster haunted house and not a fun build.

Poor

I was very excited about this set, like all other releases this was a build that I wish I would not have purchased. Disjointed, lacking soul. Feels like a team that failed at bringing a lego build to life. Just a cheap, push it through junk. Designers, you failed. All sets just seem to getting more simple and less thought.

Terrible Design for the elevator
on September 3, 2023
Posted by: thebocesman
The elevator gets stuck going up because the shaft is too narrow. All videos online say to just take the whole thing apart and try to make it have a little more space, but I shouldn't have to do that.
If I hadn't bought this over a year ago I'd have taken it back to the store to get my money back for this AND the power motors I bought. I feel swindled by buying those bc at least I can reuse the bricks from this.

Overpriced for the features and a bad build
on September 23, 2020

I have been building legos for years and years. This set disappointed me. I was so excited to get it and when putting it together it was a bit boring. The only item I truly liked were the handicapped mini figure and the organ. The roof was difficult to put together and everytime I look at it, the roof falls apart. Also the elevator does not work and I took it apart twice and rebuilt it. It just spins. And I am not sure what the other gears were for. I was so disappointed. Usually a Lego build gives me a high and makes me laugh for days. This one just mad me sad.

We're really sorry you're not 100% happy with your LEGO® Haunted House set.

We always test and retest our toys to make sure that they’ll hold up to play when they’re built exactly as shown in the instructions. If your set ever seems like it's not very sturdy, the best thing to do is double-check your build. Sometimes there may be a piece just a little off from where it should be. You’ll also want to make sure that all the pieces are pressed tightly together.

If you'd like a hand troubleshooting the build, or if you find that any pieces aren't holding together as they should, feel free to give us a shout at LEGO.build/Service-BV.

We listen carefully to the feedback we get from our all fans, so hearing your thoughts will be super helpful for our designers when they’re coming up with new sets.
