Use Measure and Patience for a GREAT BUILD!

I had bought this set for the aesthetics as well as the fact that I’m a huge fan of amusement park rides of all sorts. But then I saw the negative reviews that pertained particularly to the car stopping or getting stuck, or the chain not catching the car as well as it should, etc. I can totally see how those instances can easily happen, but more on that later. I found this set to be a wonderful build inside and out due to the gothic/Victorian architecture, and all the fun mini-builds like the artifacts placed all around. The mini figures, ride operators/ghosts as well as the wary park guests look fantastic! Ok now here’s the important part. As you are building the drop tower, from the VERY first lay out of bricks in the footprint, until the very top, you MUST carefully lock each brick tightly and MUST make sure that all bricks for the tower align as flat/straight/perfect angles at corners as possible. Sometimes those flat 1x1 pieces can be a few slight degrees off and that can make a difference in how smoothly the car comes up and down. There is so little room of give in the shaft walls and the outside of the car, you must exude measure and patience in this part of the build. I used the exact number of chain pieces needed and gave slight adequate spacing around all the gears. Once I finally got the car built, I placed it at the base of the tower and turned the crank a bit reluctantly. It took a couple turns for the machinery to “marry”, so you will hear sounds from those turning pieces, but once all gears linked to the chains, the car went up and pummeled down perfectly! Whew! I’ve cranked the mechanism for this play feature dozens of times and each time a perfect raise and drop! If you are patient in the tower build and strive for straight edges and perfect corners, the build will perform as it is intended. As an added bonus, I added LCD flickering candles inside. Spooky and cool! Enjoy the build if you plan of getting this fine set!

I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. There were just a few possible improvements that keep me from giving it 5 stars. I wanted to write a review because I saw this one got more negative reviews than I expected. I think this is one of the coolest looking sets for sure, some cool mechanical stuff and a lot of fun little details. I wish there were a lot more haunted house/halloween themed sets.
I actually didn't have any issues with the elevator - while building I made sure that all the gears and wheels were fairly loose and free spinning, and when I attached the chain I made sure it was tight (I think I used the recommended # of links). At first I thought the elevator was getting stuck at the top but then I realized you have to just stop turning the crank and it will have a brief delay before falling. If you keep turning the crank the elevator won't fall all the way to the bottom either.
Some other details I really enjoyed like when I was building the front doors I thought wouldn't it be cool if these open simultaneously, then you end up adding gears so they do that. And liked the little dangling skeleton, snakes and stuff.
The only other issue I had was that I can't quite get 2 of the big fold-out sections to fit together squarely but I think that happens on some of these sets if the bottom isn't square or it's not on a perfectly flat surface. I've tried making sure all the pieces are tight but there's still a little gap. Also difficult to fit all the minifigures in the house when it's folded up. It's nice that they have a minifigure with disabilities and a ramp for the front entrance, but then ironically you can't really fit him in the house or elevator very well.
The only things I would have changed - I wasn't familiar with the references to the older adventure theme so the references were lost on me. There also could have had more detail on the roof like adding tiles or little mossy bits, leaves and snakes and stuff. And I would have rather had it just be a "haunted house" than a haunted house amusement park attraction. Like I would have rather had monster minifigures rather than 6 humans. But if you don't like some of that I think this would be a great set to take and add some of those features yourself.
But overall it looks really cool, lots of fun to build, fun mechanical features and lots of details. I hope there's more like this in the future but doesn't need to fit into the amusement park theme.

Extremely Happy I purchased this set.

This is an awesome set it is a lot of fun to build and play with. It has some unique building techniques. Lots of detail and interesting aspects to the build. The instructions are superb, easy to follow, and actually somewhat enjoyable at times as they include some details about the artifacts as you are building them. By far, one of the nicest sets of instruction manuals I have encountered.
All of the features worked flawlessly. I had no problems or trouble with the elevator or chain. A little advice for the chain is count the links and use the specific number stated in the instructions. Also, when you assemble the chain links make sure they are all snapped together the same way.
As I said before the elevator works flawlessly in my build.
This was an excellent building experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. As a matter of fact I may just buy a second set just because I liked it that much.

The Best

So this is my very first Lego build on my own. I worked with my niece on a couple of the smaller Disney princess sets, but nothing to this scale. I absolutely love it and now am obsessed with Lego. The build was a complete joy. I am a scary movie/haunted house fan so this was a no brainer purchase for me. I was a little worried about the elevator portion because of the reviews, but all worked perfectly. No missing pieces, no problems with instructions….just so much fun.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Works perfectly

Having read several reviews on this set that complained about the elevator not working, I was careful to tightly connect all the pieces and make sure they were flush, as well as triple-check how many links were in the drive chain. The first run through it did stick, but just at one point where a 1x1 was slightly off center near the top and it was easily fixed without disassembly; now the elevator works perfectly every time and it NEVER gets old! Drop coasters are one of my favorites, and having this little ride at home is almost as fun as going on the real thing! I love all the nods to the older Egyptian sets that my brother and I built when we were kids, though my favorite detail is definitely the beautiful pipe organ. All the little stories in the instructions about each artifact's origins are a nice touch as well!
My set was missing two parts, one from bag #8 that was crucial to the mechanism (had to pause the build for a week to wait for the part to arrive), and a 2x1 from bag #16 that I could skip and add later when it comes in the mail. Weirdly, the #16 bag instead contained a 1x6 black plate that doesn't seem to even be in the inventory for this set, so I'm not sure what happened there, but thanks to LEGO for sending out the missing parts right away.

Egyptian Theme

This is one of my favorite sets of the last few years. I love the Egyptian haunted theme! Reminds me of sets I had as a kid. I enjoyed adding the power-up features, however the elevator operation can be touchy and does not always work or can get annoyingly jammed. Really test out the chain operation and overall spacing while building the top of the tower. Great set overall!

Haunted house set

What a great piece of lego engineering. This is only my 5th set I've built. But what an amazing piece. So much fun building it.!! Highly recommend. I love all the little room details/treasures. The mini figs are excellent. Don't miss this set. Great work to the designers everything went smooth and great flow to the build. Loved the little elevator ride!! Only thing I wish it had was more light up features to show off all the little room details. Thank you so much for an excellent set!!!
