What a great piece of lego engineering. This is only my 5th set I've built. But what an amazing piece. So much fun building it.!! Highly recommend. I love all the little room details/treasures. The mini figs are excellent. Don't miss this set. Great work to the designers everything went smooth and great flow to the build. Loved the little elevator ride!! Only thing I wish it had was more light up features to show off all the little room details. Thank you so much for an excellent set!!!

Super fun build

First - you MUST buy the power functions to go with this set. Without it, it's a fine build but you'll lose out of the motorized elevator (much better than hand-turning).
Regarding the elevator drop, there's a bit of a danger of getting out of sync with the Powered Up app. The app decides when it's pulled the elevator car to the top of the tower, so if it's too short, too bad, and if it's too high, it'll activate the drop of the elevator car before you execute the command. It is not an error in my building, I'm convinced after all sorts of troubleshooting, but in any event, you can get out and back in to Powered Up and it'll work fine.
My only other complaint is that one of two of the black roof sections are connected to the structure by the most minimal number of bricks, so you may find it frustrating to get everything just right and not trigger a collapse of the roof section.
All of which sounds like I didn't enjoy the set, but I really did. The little touches all over the set are delightful, the build (other than the final two tower sections) is fresh and not repetitive, and it's a hugely entertaining structure all around.

Nice mechanics, poor design

I really was excited to build this one, Beyond the Brick's Boone gave a really great review and everything he mentioned about the hidden clues and Easter Eggs made it interesting. It was interesting! I do like the mechanism of the elevator and the cool way the front doors open. I am also impressed that they have included a disabled character and ramp. But, unfortunately, the details of this house (I am talking about the outside mostly) are just cheap looking and not so interesting. The color choice of black for the roof accentuates the seams of the roof and it just looks cheap (and would also show off dust eventually). The repetition of the details around every window set are just a bit boring. But, it is a good set to buy for parts. Plenty of gears, olive green bricks, candlesticks, and black plates. This is one I felt fine taking apart for parts. I think with different colors and more design variation, this would be fine.

Great Build

This is my first review ever. I love Monster/Horror Themes, so when this came out I had to have it. For me the thing I like the most about this build is NO DECALS, NO STICKERS. I hate stickers. My old Army paws have a hard time with them.
It took me 3 days to complete and It was a ton of fun. It is going to look great on my display table next to the 10228 Monster Fighters Haunted House, with the 40423 Halloween Hayride in the middle.
I added some of the old Mummy Bricks I had, it really made it POP.
Please make more of these. A Universal Monster theme is due

Hauntingly Beautiful Build!

I love the look of this model! It is in my opinion the most beautiful building design for an official set. I'm almost tempted to buy a second one, so that I can build it as a normal house. I love the colors and the ingenious techniques that went into the build.
My only grip with this near perfect set is when working with the two motors, USB hub and Powered UP app, is that the teeth of the chain can easily loose their grip with the drop carriage so that the carriage will not make it all the way to the top of the tower. Some days it works perfect, and others its really off. I don't know if room temperature has any play on this or not, because I do not move or mess with this set other than opening it up as it is designed to open like a doll house.
The Powered Up App is wonderful and adds a great soundtrack to this set. Even with its chain flaw, this is by far my favorite set.

Fun Experience!
on August 13, 2020

I loved building this set and the Egyptian curse theme. I love little details that Lego is so good at doing, the camera to take your picture on the ride made me smile. I notice a lot of complaints about the lift, I did have a hiccup with the lift chain; I modified it by adding 2 links (it came with 4 extra) because it was too tight and I couldn't get the ends to reach. After adding the 2 links, the lift rises and drops like a charm. The crank can be a little difficult to start, but once the lift gets past the first floor it moves easier, it's just trying to get past the slowing mechanism (which I thought was genius).

Nice set - Way too easy to build
on June 1, 2020

Let's start with the critique: The set is a super easy build and doesn't justify the 18+ age range. The building instructions are too simple to make it a challenging building experience. Sometimes one step includes only two or three bricks. For the most part building techniques are simple as well as repetitive and also don't provide many challenges. I had hoped for a much longer building phase and distraction. The free fall tower gets boring after the fifth time.
Now for the positive aspects of the set: The set has many references to old LEGO sets and they are described throughout the building instructions which is really nice. That way LEGO makes sure that you don't miss any of the references and it is a nice short break from building when you have a short read about what you are actually building right now.
Overall experience: The free-fall tower is a really nice feature but you don't get to see much of it as the car falls down. This probably has to do with the tower not being high enough to see much - don't get me wrong, the tower is high, just not enough for this purpose. I wouldn't recommend Power Functions for this set as it doesn't make sense to have the free-fall tower running in an infinite loop. Many online reviews that I saw online said the free fall is not working well as bricks get in the way and the chain creates problems. But when you apply a good sense while building and make sure that bricks are aligned the free-fall tower works very fine. I didn't encounter any issues with the functionality. The brake mechanism is very clever and I liked building it. The interior is full of experiences, the exterior looks nice. Under normal circumstances I would add this set closed to my Modular Buildings display, but in the end the entire experience was a bit boring all the way from building the set to using the free-fall tower. By the end of the day I had it disassembled and re-packaged to sell it, in the hopes that someone else will have more fun with it.
While it was just not enough for me to keep it, I still would recommend it for fans!
