Always Good With TurboTax

Have been doing my taxes myself for many years doing TurboTax. Makes a complex process relatively simple and a lot less stressful. Very cost-effective too. Go TurboTax!

I have used Turbo Tax for years now, I love how you can select step by step or do it on your own. Instead of going to tax prep business and spending $100-$200 I love that I can use this for $40, this is the best if you only own a home, and have children. No hassle!

Hit and miss

Overall, TurboTax is helpful. It finds the forms I need to file and obscure small items I wouldn't think to claim. However, it has limitations. One I found was in the Illinois tax return - it does not allow the user to choose to apply the refund to next year's taxes. And it prints out the entire federal form to submit to Illinois, although only the first page is needed.
Furthermore, if you have municipal bond mutual funds and want it to figure out what part is not taxable by the state, you have to enter the percentages for all 50 states, not just the one you're interested in! Another general issue is the lack of transparency - it's hard to figure out what TurboTax is doing with the data that's input, so it's hard to know where some of the claims are coming from. I found myself going over and over the process multiple times to make sure I didn't miss something, and it isn't as easy as you might think to find where to go back to in order to input missing information. I am hoping that the developers will correct some of these issues soon.
