TurboTax is GREAT

It is a great software and the step by step in very good and helpful. But what is greater is the CUSTOMER service!! They are knowledgeable and courteous.

Watch out for additional hidden costs

Intuit advertises that some of their products include a state return. They don't tell you that it costs $25 more to e-file each state return! Also, if you have to file state returns in more than one state, add another $40 for each additional state! So, to e-file in 2 states, you'll be paying an additional $90 on top of the base federal package price. It adds up to be quite expensive for a product that hasn't updated its clunky screen design for decades.

Best way to self-file your fed and state tax

I've been using TurboTax for over 20 years now. I use the interview data entry format to make sure I don't miss something. I efile both fed and state taxes. I do wish they would bundle in the state tax e-file charge of $25 like they do for the federal e-file because otherwise you have the hassle of either deducting that fee from your refund, which slows it down and complicates things, or you have the hassle of paying online by credit card. I always purchase the $45 Audit Defense insurance. So far so good. I'm glad that TT Deluxe still includes simple Sched. C for businesses, though they still prompt you to upgrade to a more expensive product.

Eh, it works okay, but costs too much

It walks you through the steps, but then gives you the standard deduction anyway. Every year I debate trying something else, but I'm used to it.
