Turbo Tax keeps getting better each year!

My TurboTax experience this year seemed to flow much easier this year than last. I find the process flawless, and I hope to use Turbo Tax for many years to come.

Need A New Gimmick
on March 31, 2021

I use Turbo Tax every year, but this " free, not free" does not sit well with anyone. I know customers and even my experience have been bad. It's time for another gimmick. It is always "Free" if... or some other way of making it not apply. not worth the bad reputation.

Unexpected fees

Purchased deluxe to include state. Was charged 25 for state at tax preparation completion and an additional 40 for processing fee.

comprehensive and consistent as usual
on March 31, 2021

The experience was very good as usual. I have confidence in the completeness of the return. There were some unclear points about how to handle the RMD money that was processed before the requirement to take it in 2020 was dropped. However, updates in the later versions of the software had comments added to make the required responses clearer in the situation.
It would be nice to know what the actual deductible amounts are for the deductions section. For example, I know that deductible amount for medical expenses is adjusted. It is not clear if the amount shown in the summary is the total of expenses or the deductible amount. This information would help strategize expenses for next year if my total of deductions began to approach the standard deduction. In the current summary, it not totally clear how close the actual deductions are.
It is still a bit odd see the changes that have been implemented in the 1040 SR. The extra calculations seem to be rather informal in structure. Of course, I have not completed non computerized paper form for maybe 25 years now. Maybe this is not relevant. However, when I contemplate completeness, it is hard to know if it is all there. However, I just trust the excellent history of TurboTax!!!

Works but needs some improvements
on March 31, 2021

The product works OK, but there are a few things that need improvement:
* The place to enter my IRS-issued "Identity protection PIN" is tucked under "Other tax situations" in the Federal section. Because so many people are issued these PINs for security, it should really be included as a question in the Turbo dialogue/interview -- "Have you been issued an IRS protection PIN?". This entry can be easily missed (as I did last year) and / or confused with the IRS e-filing PIN code (as I have also done).
* When e-filing my NY state taxes, there is a requirement to enter the first three characters of my license "document number." Turbo states that this an "8 or 10 digit number," BUT it is not a NUMBER. It is a CHARACTER field! The language should clearly state this to avoid confusion.
* Many times the "Back" button is either not included on a screen, or brings the user to a different place in the interview than anticipated. This is confusing and frustrating.
* In general, the navigation is not always clean. When going back into Turbo and reviewing data previously entered, there should always be an option to skip over a section if the user does not want to *update* the fields.

I've been using Turbotax for years and I am very, very happy with it EXCEPT when I have returns that are a little out of the norm. For instance I did the tax returns for my son who is in the military and Turbotax failed me completely in highlighting how state returns are so different for the military. There should have been some sort of a red flag when I stated that my son was in the military. For me, of course, I didn't know what I didn't know and the software should have given a signal.
I often work in several states and I find that the allocation could be clearer, particularly when you may have things like unemployment which is taxable in one state and not in another. Perhaps you should have a simple worksheet that makes this allocation clear and simple and highlights potential issues.
