Poor moveability

When you need to pull the mower back 95% of the time the drive wheels are locked and you have to drag the wheels across the lawn. Don't know why they rarely release. Makes for a very poor and strenuous lawn cutting experience. I have several Greenworks 40V tools - weed trimmer, hedge trimmer, leaf blower and power washer. Been a good customer but now I am so frustrated with this lawn mower, i will start replacing them another brand.
Pros: Quiet
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello DirkD.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and leaving us your feedback. We are sorry you are not happy with the self-propelled drive system. With self-propelled lawn mowers, there are two categories to consider: front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. All Greenworks self-propelled mowers have a rear-wheel drive system. The self-propelled feature is not usable in reverse. They are designed to lock when pulled back to prevent damage to the drive belt. If you are using the self-propelled feature, the mower will attempt to move forward and will be difficult to move backwards. To revers the mower, you would have to release the self-propelled lever, move the mower forward at least 6 inches, the clutch in the wheels will release and you can pull the mower backwards.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This mower has plenty of battery to mow my small yard on one charge. Its easy to use and i like being able to adjust the walking speed, as i like to walk at a brisk pace. The turbo power was a great feature when mulching leaves.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good Mower Need extra Batteries & Self Propelled ?

I've had this mower for 2.5 yrs very happy with it. You need to buy more batteries, mine came with (1) 5ah which only ran for maybe 20 min so i ended up purchasing 2 more batteries. I have a .25 acre lot that's including the house & garage on it so really not a lot to mow & (1) battery wouldn't do the front yard I got (2) more when they were on sale that way i could complete the whole yard while the first battery was charging. The self propelled mode works ok at first then dies out once the battery gets low so overall great mower needs extra batteries & don't spend extra on self propelled unless you have just a small yard.
Pros: Convenient, Easy to Use, Quiet, Durable, Environmentally Safe, Effective, Powerful

Battery life and design are a problem
on July 13, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this mower last July and have used it since then. The self-propelled sliding handle is awkward and uncomfortable, but the real problem is the batteries. The batteries started lasting shorter and shorter times. The manual says not to fully exhaust them or this can happen. But there is no way to tell what charge remains in the batteries as one mows, and the mower fully exhausts one battery before switching to drawing power from the second battery. Seems like it was designed to make you have to buy more batteries. BUT the battery I need (so I can switch out three of them) is out of stock. Very frustrating. Buy something else.

Hello Dkay.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. Greenworks batteries typically feature a Battery Capacity Indicator (BCI) button that allows you to check the remaining charge.
Here's how to check the battery.
Locate the BCI button. This button is usually found at the end or on the front of the battery pack.
Press the button firmly. You may need to apply a direct push with the tip of your finger.
Observe the indicator lights. A series of green lights will illuminate, indicating the remaining charge level. The lights will remain lit for a few seconds before automatically turning off.
Battery charge levels
3 Green Lights: 80-100% capacity.
2 Green Lights: 50-80% capacity.
1 Solid Green Light: 20-50% capacity.
1 Blinking Green Light: 10-20% capacity.
No lights: Under 10% capacity, requires immediate charging.

Frequent Problems

I live in a hot and humid area of the United States and this mower frequently stops from overheating or stops due to our thick grass. It seems like there is an issue every 5 minutes or less with this mower. Because of this, it takes me multiple DAYS to mow my 1/2 Acre lawn. It is frankly ridiculous. Additionally, I do not use the self-propel feature, because the batteries already die so fast that it is not worth the extra power drain. I've used gas powered mowers of similar price-range and never had any issue like this before.
This lawn mower is weak, poorly engineered, and not worth the price they are asking for it. I will not be purchasing another electric lawn mower from Greenworks ever again.

Hello DisappointedCustomer547.
We are sorry to hear that the included 40v Mowers' battery runtime does not meet your expectations. As we are not sure of the condition of your lawn, we are not exactly sure why the battery did not meet your expectations. The maximum runtime often applies to a flat, open yard. Slopes and obstacles require more power, and users can expect running time to be less, if this is the case. Runtime measurements are also related to the condition of the grass and if it is well-maintained. Tall, thick grass requires more power, and you must mow it slower, consuming added runtime. Here are a few tips to ensure the max runtime is achieved. Ensure you charge the battery fully before each use, maintain the battery properly by cleaning terminals, avoid extreme temperatures during storage, consider buying a second battery for larger lawns, mow in a straight line, and choose a mower with a powerful battery suitable for your lawn size. If the grass has been left to exceed four inches, we advise that you raise the cutting height and cut no more than one-third of the length of grass at a time, wait a couple of days and do another one-third, cut when grass is dry and walk at steady pace to allow the blade to work more efficiently. As the lawn becomes consistently maintained you will see the cut and runtime improve. Hope these tips help!
