Battery life is very short only lasted about a half hour and could not charge it because of overheating. Called customer service who was helpful and they are sending me out a new battery because this one might be defective.

AWESOME MOWER!

This 21" mower with batteries cuts my lawn so much better than any professional company and I have tried 3 different lawn companies in the past 6 years. I have had my zoysia grass commercially reel mowed and it was always a problem with 1) their equipment not working properly,2) they could not change the height of the mower cut and 3) it was very expensive. So I decided to do the lawn myself. Did not want to go thru the hassle of using a gas-powered mower. Been there, done that... always ran into problems...difficult to start, have to drain gas at end of season, change oil, etc.
I have other Greenworks products (2 blowers, tiller) and have been very pleased with them all. So I decided to look into a battery powered mower. Best decision I have ever made! This mower, mulches beautifully, cuts clean, and is easy to handle and store. I use the self propel only when i am going up the hill, for it will drain the battery quicker if you use it constantly. Take a look at the pics. I am so very happy with my Greenworks mower. Just wish I had made this purchase a few years back!

Battery doesn't seem to last for advertised time

First I do really like this machine. It is super quiet, and does a very fine job of cutting. I also live in south Louisiana, and my grass is tough (St. Aug/Zoysia mix) so it probably had some effect on the battery life. I do have to cut weekly. I used this mower after an 8 day growth, and it only lasted 30 mins. before needing a recharge. Having already a Greenworks 40v chainsaw, I was able to finish in about 45-50 mins. using spare battery.
I am chalking it up to our grass here it is very tough and hard on mowers/blades. I will use it on smaller areas, maybe back yard where I can trim better with this mower. If you live in Deep South where St. Aug/Zoysia or centipede grass is common, or if you have a slightly larger yard you may want a more powerful (80v or greater) system. Still all in all a quality, well built and easy to use machine.
Pros: Easy to Use

Hello cajuntractor,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the run time of this battery when used in this lawn mower.
It is important to adjust your mowing techniques to make the most out of the battery life! This unit is advertised as running up to 45 minutes *per 4Ah battery, but it goes without saying that that the harder the unit works, the quicker the battery drains.
Here are a few mowing tips to help achieve the optimal run time.
1) When cutting thick grass, reduce walking speed to allow for a more effective cut and a proper discharge of the clippings.
2) Only mow 1/3 of the total grass length at a time - no more. For a healthy lawn, always cut off one-third or less of the total length of the grass. The average lawn should be approximately 1 1/2 to 2” (3.8 to 5 cm) long during cool months, and between 2" to 3 1/4" (5 cm to 8.3 cm) long during hot months.
3) Mow when the grass is dry. As this is an electric unit, mowing wet/damp grass is a safety issue. However, ensuring the grass is dry will also help the grass cut cleanly and discharge appropriately. Wet/damp grass carries more weight and will mostly stick to the blade/motor shaft and will not appropriately discharge or cut easily.
4) Make sure the battery is cool before use. When the battery will not be in use, we suggest storing it indoors, in a cool dry area - away from direct sunlight. Leave the charger unplugged and the battery disconnected from the charger unless it needs charging.
We hope these tips will help! If not, we would be happy to investigate to see whether your run time would be considered average; please contact Greenworks at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS). All we ask that you have access to the unit so that we can complete troubleshooting with you and gather necessary unit information.

Back breaking

When going forward it’s a great mower but when you get in a spot you have to go backwards it won’t go in reverse the wheels lock, needless to say you have to lift it and carry it in reverse. This machine will only go forward. If i would of known this I would’ve bought something different. Now I’m stuck with a back breaking machine.
Pros: Cost-Saver

Hello Laurie48,

Thank you for taking the time to review our product we always appreciate customer feedback! The self-propelled feature is not usable in reverse. They are designed to lock when pulled back to prevent damage to the drive belt. If you are using the self-propelled feature, the mower will attempt to move forward and will be difficult to move backwards. You would have to release the self-propelled lever to pull the mower backwards while still holding onto the start lever.
We hope this information helps you understand our product better, and perhaps encourages you to give it a second chance.

If you have further questions or concerns, please contact us at 1-888-909-6757. We are happy to help.

Terrible batteries
on May 24, 2023

I purchased this lawn mower last year. The battery that it came with had 4 bars, but wouldn't charge more than 2 bars, no matter how long I charged them. It would run for about 20 mins. I called customer service and they sent a new battery. The new battery would charge all 4 bars, but still only run for about 30 mins. We have mowed for about 4 or 5 times now and the new battery, although it charges all 4 bars, it only goes for about 20 mins. I have had a black & decker electric for about 12 years and was able to mow my lawn in one go for all 12 years. There was no significant change in the battery over all those years and the greenworks batteries are worse than how mower batteries were 12 years ago. Very disappointed. No more greenworks products :-(

Fire the engineers! Battery system is terrible

I am a huge Greenworks customer and now so disappointed. There is no method to get the battery out of its cage. Your fingers cannot fit in between the plastic holder. The battery should and does not have a handle to pull it out. So after 1 year you fight with it and need an entire tool set to get out the battery. Notice the pictures don't even show you inside the cage? That's because the camera can't see inside because a stupid engineer had the battery cover fall on you. Does not stay open or go all the way up. You need a tool just to keep it open while getting other tools to get out the battery. Fire the engineer

Dear No more greenworks,

Thank you for taking the time to voice your option! Our batteries do take a firm grip to pull the battery out. This is to ensure dislodgement does not occur during operation. Make sure that the tracks that the tracks on the battery are free of debris and dirt before you insert the battery, any debris can affect the movement of the battery. When removing the battery, apply a firm grip to the battery latch and place one hand on product and remove the battery pack with a firm pull.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This mower is my 8th (mower, chainsaw, 2 blowers, 2 string trimmers, snow blower, snow shovel) Greenworks 40V tool that I have purchased. ALL HAVE MET AND EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. Don’t let anyone tell you the 40V does not have enough power. Granted to cut a tree over 14 inches in diameter is a little tough with my 16 inch saw. But how often do most of use have that task. The ease of operation and low noise level are so much better than gas powered. I WILL ALWAYS RECOMMEND GREENWORKS!!!

Bail switch cuts off too easily

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I assembled my new mower and charged the batteries. I have been able to mow both front and back lawns. It takes one and a half batteries to mow each lawn. The mower starts easily and runs well.
My only complaints are that it is difficult to maintain a medium speed of propulsion. Also, the bail switch is too sensitive. I can maintain pressure with both hands, but it still cuts off too easily. Is there any way to adjust this switch?
Pros: Easy to Use, Quiet, Effective, Powerful
