Hello Gordon,
I want to sincerely apologize for all the problems the printer has been causing. We certainly build our printers with the intent of providing a reliable experience for our customers, so I can imagine how frustrating and disappointing a situation like yours can be.
Due to the vague nature of the issue, please reach out to us for support. We'd be more than happy to work through any troubleshooting or initiate a replacement under your printer's warranty. You can give us a call at +1 800-474-6836 between the hours of 8 am - 9 pm ET. To expedite things a bit, I recommend gathering this information beforehand:
- Model number - Serial number - Your location - Your case number (from prior contact with support)
On a related note, I'd like to mention the fact that HP printers do also have the warranty from their purchase date, so if you find you need to use it, I hope you will. To verify the warranty, you can use the following link: support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarranty
In case of further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us at: hp.com/contactHP
I took everything out of the box, the printer and electric cable, plugged it in, followed the instructions to set the printer up and realized there were no other cables in the box. There was an Ethernet cable missing and a USB cable missing. I had to used the USB cable from the printer I was replacing. Not a happy day.

I was told by the sales rep that the 404dn could auto select emulations. I should have known better, it cant. Back in 1990, the BGL printer/plotter which came standard with Postscript, PCL, HPGL, Calcomp, Tektronix, and others could auto select between all of them. This is as far as HP has come?
This was a replacement for an HP 2055 that gave long and good service but finally gave up the ghost. The M404 does everything the old printer did but even more smoothly. I have a minor quibble with the documentation, which does not make it clear how the paper feed works (tray 3, if present, by default unless paper has been placed in tray 1) or explain what "normal" and "fine" resolution mean in terms of dpi. Otherwise a very fine and solid printer that does everything I got it for.
The printer is fine but your Smart App sucks. You really messed things up when you went to the Smart App over being able to format the printer from Windows. I definitely would not recommend any of the HP printers as long as you are required to use the Smart App.
Overall the product is great . It prints fast but when printing different size papers it has a hang up. The printer will stop printing when it does not recognize the paper type.
I would recommend this to a friend!
