i came to read some reviews and i disagree with the people that gave this lego set 1 or 2 stars. I have lego sets from the 80's from when I was a kid and now my children play with them. If you know what Lego is all about or payed attention to what you are buying you would not be disappointed. A Lego building doesn't produce sounds... doesn't have a speaker and even though the motor part is cool, it would be just as neat without it! It is a Lego set, not an instrument people! I bought it because it combines my two passions, piano and lego, I love how it feels, how it looks, and how it moves. although it is a baby grand, not a grand piano you can also see that in the pictures and ads. I also like the original model better, the one submitted to ideas, but I understand it would be more expensive and complex to make it that way.

Phenomenal build

I was super skeptical of buying this LEGO set because of the high price point, but after spending around 15 hours or so building this set, I am blown away. The attention to detail is amazing. The seat being functional was cool. The pedal working, the different ways the lid can open and close, the intricate detail to mimic the strings inside a piano, all of it was amazing and in particular I really, really like how this build is smooth looking. It is not like a Technic build where you see the 'bones'. No, this looks like quality item once done.
That said, I did notice three things that are a little disappointing. 1. The side of the piano where the batteries go does not fully close and there's a gap. Minor pet peeve, but I understand why this choice was made. 2. The piano does not play music from the piano. This is a known issue that many have stated in prior reviews and I see what they mean. I might add a raspberry pi with a speaker into it, but this just seems like a missed opportunity from LEGO. 3. The keys, while phenomenal, play the same pattern regardless of song selected. Again, I understand why this decision was made, but it would have been cool if the piano keys actually changed patterns based on the song.
Aside from those three points, I love this build and it honestly has me exploring other larger builds. What do do next.... highly recommended.

Great Product, Needs a Little Work

The piano itself is fantastic and works well. The instructions are good. It's worth buying and building whether or not you want to use the app's features. There's two things lego would benefit on improving, and to be aware of before buying:
1) The instruction booklet is so large that it can be difficult to read all of the instructions, especially the information near the binding, like which parts are needed for each step. They would really benefit from separating the instructions to 2-3 booklets, as they do for other large sets.
2) The three legs on the piano are flimsy and not designed well. Moving the piano at all, even gently, causes the legs to fall off under the weight of the heavy piano because there's so few connections keeping the legs on the piano. I had to glue the legs for them to stay on. If you don't feel comfortable using glue on legos, this may not be the product for you.

I'm relatively new to the LEGO scene, but just knew I had to have this set. I waited until release date and somehow was lucky enough to score one. As an avid piano player since I was 4ish, this set blew my mind. The details on this were INCREDIBLE. It brought me back to being a kid as I eagerly tried to learn the mechanics of the instrument. I would crawl under, over, around and through to see how it worked - from the keys hammering the strings, the pedals, the way the top would open/close, the sliding/collapsing of the sheet music holder/stand... The details of this set were stunning, right down to the red velvet (well, plastic..) of the hammers over the strings. This brought me so much joy to build, the memories this conjured up were priceless. It was such a pleasure to build, and looks amazing on display. I must admit, I cried a little when I was finally done assembling and powered up the Lego app to make it 'play.' This is easily my favorite set - I am so glad I spent the money. I must admit I was on the fence because of the cost, but knew it would be worth it in the end - and it was, a million times over. Thank you Lego (and everyone involved) for designing and providing such an amazing piece. Simply stunning!

Coolest Music Box I Ever Built!!

This is the first Lego set I *had* to have. It ended up being my anniversary/birthday/Christmas present from my husband. As a piano player, and ex-piano teacher I absolutely loved the design! The detail put into this one was awesome! From the sound board, to the strings, and the little hammers attached to the keys, I had a blast seeing it all come together. The instructions were very well done. I also appreciated the tests for the motor as you went along with the build. As to people being upset about not being able to “play” your own songs, this didn’t bother me. I went into the purchase knowing it was going to basically be a music box ... one that looks fantastic! If you love pianos, and can appreciate a great design, buy this set.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Need to fix

The piano wires (orange tubes) was shipped in plastic bags and a lot of them were bent and I was unable to straighten. Suggest you ship between cardboard or something like that. No instructions on making the music besides turning it on which goes off after flashing a few times.

Pianist Nirvana a la LEGO, however…

The detail and technical adaptation of this build is utterly amazing. Why it’s not 5 stars is that if you are going to put that much detail into something, don’t drop the ball. What bothers me to the point of not using the music via the app is that the notation is incorrect for every song. Not even like someone tried to get close. I don’t think any of the music is under copyright so that just felt like laziness. Bothers me. But maybe others don’t care.
