I have been waiting twenty years for Lego to release a roller coaster and its finally here!
THE BUILD Construction time in total was about eight hours. It might seem repetitive building supports over and over, but there is more than enough variation that it isn't boring. I only encountered a few minor issues while assembling the supports. When assembled correctly the build feels stable. This set is packed with plenty of cool building techniques from the coaster sign to the roof of the station.
CONS The only con I see in this set is I wish it had a steeper drop hill.
VALUE I've seen a lot of complaints online that this set doesn't include power functions. I feel that most people that are purchasing this set probably already have a few power functions sets themselves. Also the set has a pretty good price per piece ratio especially with the new track elements that you can buy power functions to go with it without running up the cost too much. I feel the overall value of the set for the money is great and I can't wait to purchase a second one for parts!
LAST COMMENTS I hope this set brings many future coaster sets and maybe a strict coaster line with rail packs and hopefully loops, corkscrews, barrel rolls, and many more inversions.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Roller coaster.....awesome

Our 6 year old son wanted this...luckily daddy wanted it too. Wonderful mixture of complexity. We all assembled on and off over a day and a half was great watching it come together. Even managed a few testing accidents that required the Lego police and emergency services..now we have to buy a second so we can "design our own version".

Just like LEGOland roller coaster!

Just recently returned from LEGOland California where we went on the LEGO Technic Coaster - way fun!
What I noticed about the Roller Coaster set 10261 is the track seems almost identical to the Lego Technic Coaster! Now I can "go for a ride" whenever I want! Who-hoo!

I have been waiting for this set for years. It did not disappoint. It is very well designed and build order is excellent and it is so much fun to watch it run. And you can run both sets of cars at the same time :)
I think the price point is fair for this set. I definitely feel I got every penny's worth of value. Personally I am glad the motor/battery was not included, that would have driven the price to the pain point (IMHO)... especially for those of us that already had them.
I did have some trouble with the chain lift, it occasionally slipped on the upper gear. After triple checking that I had installed it correctly, I installed a small mod that resolved the problem. I removed 3 links and put a chain guide toward the top to force the gear to engage without slipping (picture included). This in no way detracts from my whole hearted positive recommendation of this set, I still assume I did something wrong.
Like the other reviewers, I hope this is just the beginning. Loops.... corkscrews... inverted... please. I am actually considering buying a second set to see if I can connect them together for twice the fun.

The set I have always wanted!

When I got my Lego freight train set as a child many years ago, I used to put bricks and books under my track to turn it into a roller coaster. Since then I have always wanted a proper Lego roller coaster set.
The set can be built in two halves at the same time. I have experienced this in other sets and it should be advertised because it makes building with a friend or family member so much easier and more fun. I built this with my partner and we clipped the two halves of the ride together at the end.
Luckily I already had some medium power function motors handy, so I used one to power the chain lift and rollers. I powered the motor with the train controller from my childhood train set.
The set has a lot of play value as it comes with a load of mini figures, some stalls and the ride platform. Cars can be stopped and started from the ride platform using the tyre mechanism. If un-motorised, the chain lift can also be hand cranked which adds to the fun.
The only con to this set is the usual one where it has some stickers instead of printed bricks. Given the price of the set it should have been all printed bricks.
The model is huge and impressive to look at, making it both a great standalone piece or a standout part of a fairground. Overall I am very impressed with this set and have had great fun making and playing with it!

Finally!

I've been waiting so long for a true roller coaster, and I'm so happy it's finally here! The build itself was pretty repetitive, but once I started putting the track pieces in place, my excitement kicked into high gear. I have it set up with power functions, and run both trains at the same time so I can watch it go round and round and round and round and round... :D Overall, an awesome set, but would love to see some slanted curve/corner pieces...and like others, a loop would be amazing. Also, the price point is really disappointing-I feel like this set should be at least $100 cheaper. Even though I've been waiting since childhood for a Lego rollercoaster, I took weeks mulling it over trying to justify the high cost.

Creative Design

The addition of a legitimate roller coaster is long overdue from the LEGO Group, but this makes up for all that. This visually striking set adds a new level of play experience for the whole family. The price of this set makes it a bit hard to attain in many households, but is on par with the piece count. You get 11 minifigures which tops almost all other LEGO sets on the market.
There are a lot of moving parts here so be sure to follow the instructions very closely or you will have issues with the functionality. The chain and gears should all work well with little to no resistance to the cranks. The trains themselves move quickly and flawlessly around the track. The design is smooth and even though the trains move quickly on the track, the three circles it takes gives it a decently long ride before it either stops at the station or goes around for another ride.
You will want to add Power Functions to this. It is great fun to watch it work by itself. LEGO did a great job all around with this set. The only thing I wish it had was a loop, but I get that's asking a lot. Hopefully we'll see more similar sets to add to our amusement parks.

Best Family Build Yet
on July 1, 2018

We are a family of 3 (soon to be 4) who love to build with Lego during our free time. We usually buy Lego sets that our son(age 5) picks out for birthdays and other holidays. We generally build a set over the course of a few days or weeks one bag at a time before bed time.
This set took the longest for us to complete, but was very enjoyable to build. My son loved the Minifigures and other accessories like the juice stand and cotton candy cart, while my wife and I were blown away with the design of the frame and intricate mechanisms. My son also liked helping me with the gear assemblies, chain drive, and other complicated sections.
Most importantly, unlike a few of the sets we've built in the past, this one has had the greatest play value. My son and I have spent hours loading the cars with various themed characters and acting out their trips to the amusement park. Most recently was Sensei Wu and the Ninjas driving the Ultrasonic Raider to the roller coaster for few hundred laps and some cotton candy. :D
While the price is rather high, I believe this set is a great value, especially if you or your kids like to play with Lego sets just as much as building them.
The only sort of con for me, is that it takes up a lot of space. We've designated a coffee table to it, and it cant really be taken apart into smaller sections for storage. But its size is also what makes it so incredible and fun.
