Not the best modular, but has its perks
on July 26, 2021

It's hard to pinpoint what's off about this modular. I don't mind and am not frustrated with the two, 16x32 baseplates, nor do I find the tree awkward (like others have expressed). I think what I find off about this set are two things:
1. The size and structure of the house is somewhat weird. If you're placing this in a city, or a row of other modulars, this building sticks out in the wrong ways. It's easily one of the shortest buildings, and the bright teal color is only found in the Downtown Diner to match. Not a huge problem, but again, it sticks out for funny reasons.
2. There are some building choices here that make this modular seem a little "cheap" or that it wasn't fully finalized. For example, above the bay-widows there are three stacked rounded plates. I get that these are necessary to take the second floor off, but it makes it look a little strange, and almost looks like it's an error. Perhaps it should have been one complete, brick-tall rounded piece instead. Another issue is on both buildings, the back side/second floors look abruptly cut off. This makes the buildings look skinnier, less substantial, and overall less realistic. I get this is to reduce piece count and bring the cost down but it's a nevertheless noticeable. Pet Shop didn't have that problem and they look a bit more complete. There are also a handful of pieces who's colors don't match the accompanying or conjoining pieces. Tthe roofing tiles on the house are blue while underneath is black, and the snot bricks on the last level of the bookshop are tan instead of nougat.
Pros! It's my wife's favorite modular, there are some very fun building techniques, and overall, I'm glad to have it!

I love it!

I own three expert modular buildings so I am not the most experienced with this series and more experienced lego fans may have more useful things to say but I love this set. The build was fun, the main colors of the buildings look nice together, and it fits right in with my other two modular buildings. One odd thing is that one of the pieces looks like its marbled when I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t be but, its not a huge deal because you can only see it from the side. I do think this set could use a little more interior detail, particularly in the apartment above the book store but I can always do that myself using my frankly ridiculously huge collection of legos. I love this set and I cant wait to see what lego does with this series next!

Hmm, that's odd! Don't worry, though. It's super easy to request a replacement for that piece. Head to LEGO.build/BricksPieces-BV to get started.

Not what they used to be

This new one lacks the detail of previous kits. It’s beautiful on the outside but inside it’s just OK.
Previous sets like the Diner, Assembly Square or Parisian Restaurant were more detailed and made more sense.
The ladder in the basement with the chicken on the table? Is that a mousetrap? The upstairs apartment with the stairs that only would work if the top is removed? The bookstore that is just lame inside?
There is one room that was great, though. It’s the first floor of the blue building. All the other rooms were just kinda meh compared to previous kits.
The tree on the outside does look great though.

Fun modeler building

I love the fact that you could separate one building and put it on one side of the city and put the other one on the other side, Also they both have some detail, but it’s an awesome set.

Only 1/2 happy with this set.

I feel only half happy with this set. The reason being, I wish this set had been a stand-alone building of the bookshop rather than compromising so much by adding a second building. The compromises are pretty sever, especially for the teal townhouse, which is lacking a bathroom, a kitchen and the basement is more of a crawl space. This is suppose to be a home, but lacks the basic necessities of a house.
The bookshop itself suffers from the same disappointing compromises as the bookshop, but on top of not having a bathroom or a kitchen, the bookshop suffers from a lack of books and bookshelves.
I like how the bookshop exterior building looks and the colors. I also like how the townhouse looks, but I REALLY dislike the teal color. The teal seems to really clash with the warm colors of the bookshop.
The build techniques are fine and the set was enjoyable to build.
I love bookshops, and I got this set because of that love. But I DON'T love this set. I would had loved this set if the designers didn't make any compromises by just sticking to one building, the bookshop. I would had loved to had seen a fully realized bookshop with at least two isles of bookshelves, glass cabinets displaying rare books, a bathroom, and a backroom or office. This set is such a missed opportunity, as I have seen builders who purchased two of these sets to built a full bookshop building. I'm not going to double dip for something the designers should had done in the first place though.

It's okay...

I was very excited for this set and to add on to my collection, however, I was kind of disappointed. While I did like the birch tree, the exterior color of the home and the figures, that was kind of it. As others have stated it is a little smaller than other sets, so for the money I didn't think it was a great deal. The bookshop really did not have much detail inside and the home does not have a kitchen, real living space, or a bathroom. It is basically a small bedroom on its own floor and a dining space with a window bench and a fireplace. I understand it's not real, but something a little more realistic would have been nice. Overall, this set was really lacking. I hope future sets are more thought out.

To small for the money

I have over 11 Creator buildings plus Fishing Shack and Treehouse. I love to build Lego buildings. With this set you build a nice building but its way way to small to be anything worth playing with and adding to your Lego street build. I'm saddened that we get one bookcase, and actual book.... If its a bookstore we should have had several actual books and several bookcases not ONE. If you took away the title Bookstore on front would you know it was a bookstore no.... I did enjoy the grandfather clock build but the rooms are again very very small so that one piece of furniture in each room is about all that can fit in the space.
Next time I suggest make just the bookstore and just a townhome model I'd pay for each building as long as it was the size of both buildings in this kit. Overall I'm sad that this set is so sparse for what was paid and it leaves me saddened that Lego could have done better by going a little bigger and adding a little bit more furniture to the build.

Bookshop Review
on December 16, 2020

I absolutely adore the Modular Series. I have loved everyone of them going all the way back to the beginning. They have been challenging, fun, and I am always blown away by the original building techniques that the designer employs to make the build unique. This is the first modular lego that I did not feel was creative and unique. The facade of the bookshop is nice and the spiral staircase is cool. However, nothing else warranted praise. The back of the build is bland, and the side of the apartment building with the fireplace shown is an eyesore. While the birch tree was pretty, it did not fit with the build or the other modulars. It's too much of a distraction. The building is stout which makes me wonder where the pieces that could have been used to raise the height have gone. That's right, into the double interior wall. I don't know why it was decided to take a step backwards and not integrate the two build together like how it was done in the Detective's Office. Overall, this build did not live up to the reputation of the modular build series and was a clear disappointment.
