A pleasant and enjoyable build.

When I first saw the box art I kept thinking of buildings I've seen in my hometown. It looked like a nice, quite slice from the city. And the build did not disappoint.
I haven't bought or built a Lego set in nearly 15 years, and with each one I build now I'm impressed by the amount of milage they get out of every piece. A lot of creativity and talent at Lego, and it shows in this set. From the stonework, to the bay window, and even how they connect every room, I couldn't help but smile thinking how much fun the people who designed this must have had.
I won't spoil much, as part of the fun for me is seeing how they use pieces in clever ways, but one thing that surprised me was how they used skeleton legs to make the rooftop guardrail on top of Birch Books. That's something I never would have thought of doing, and when put together it fits together seamlessly.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking to get back into Lego, and it makes a beautiful display piece as well. That's not to say younger fans of Lego wouldn't have a great time going through the rooms and playing out scenarios with their mini figures.
This is also the first set that I've come across that would make a great cooperative build, as both buildings have individual sets of instructions. It would be an enjoyable activity for families, but even couples looking to have a nice project to work on together would enjoy this as well.
Great work to the folks at Lego.

Attractive, Good Choice for Intermediate Builders

Many non-expert builders I know are interested in this set because of the bookstore, and it's a good one for someone with less experience because of the clear, well-organized instructions. The new colors of the 107 Townhouse are attractive and pop out among the other Modulars although the build itself is small. I do think the brick color and design of the bookstore is too "matchy" to make it an attractive neighbor for Assembly Square, and I would have liked to see more books in Birch Books. But there's space on the balcony and under the spiral staircase for people to build their own shelves. I ended up flipping the two buildings and moving the streetlamp to the other side for a better aesthetic fit in my town.

Not impressed

I look forward to the release of the new modular every year. The first modular that I built was the Parisian Restaurant, and the interior detail was so fantastic! It rekindled my love of Lego as an adult. I've been hooked on this theme ever since! The Bookshop was a disappointment. It is smaller than the other modular buildings, and it separates into two separate buildings which I don't really like. The interior detail of the bookshop and the apartment are lacking, pretty minimal and nothing interesting or unique. I feel like the bookshop was a missed opportunity, because they could have added lots of interesting interior details. I imagined lots of bookshelves full of books, and a ladder that rolls, maybe a little cafe. The exterior of the building is attractive, but it is too small next to the other modular buildings. At this price point, I expected more. I really hope next year's release will be a larger set with lots of unique details and more advanced building techniques.

The build is much more laid back than Titanic or even Assembly Square. Pevsner’s Architecural Glossary identifies the arch over the bookshop entrance as a depressed or three-centered arch. This feature happens to feature one of the most interesting building techniques in the set. I don’t find the amount of books to be too little, for a lego set. The buildings square off well and have a sturdy structural soundness that is an improvement over parts of Assembly Square, I find. There is a fine level of plant life to complement the buildings. I find the style to breathe well, appearance wise. There is an airiness that brings about a sense of calm.

Disappointed this year :(

I buy these buildings every Jan & anxiously wait each year for a new building release. This is the 1st time in 12 years that I was disappointed by a build. There is a random bed on the top floor of the bookshop.....what is the purpose of this? There is no door & accessible from the 2nd floor stairs. Strange! The 2nd building is a townhouse? Where is the bathroom?? Kitchen??? The basement is a cool new feature but otherwise nothing exciting. Hoping next year Lego comes back with the level of design I expect from an expert Creator set.

This set doesn’t achieve the same level of detail as some of the other Modular buildings, like Parisian Restaurant and Detective’s Office. I was a little disappointed in the bookshop’s interior; there aren’t a lot of books and the upper floors are basic. The townhouse was more thought out in my opinion. I love the mouse trap in the basement and the first floor’s sitting area containing a fireplace and table with a teapot and newspaper. As for the exterior of this set, I appreciate the birch tree with a perched bird. I also like the color scheme and “Birch Books” sign. Overall, while I think the Bookshop could be improved, it is a nice addition to the Modular series. I would recommend placing it next to the Pet Shop or another small building.

Fun build, limited play
on January 20, 2020

This is the first modular building set I have purchased, but I agree with the sentiment that others have expressed here: it seems short on details. I have built (or helped my kids build) several of the recent Harry Potter sets, and when I compare this set to those, or to the Tree House, it seems like there are a lot of missed opportunities: empty wall space, empty floor space, empty yard space that could have been used for more details.
Chief amongst the details that are lacking, I think: books and bookshelves (esp. in a bookstore), gardens, and bathrooms and kitchens. There are certainly some unique spaces, like the half-basement, but many of the spaces such as the dining room table and cafe table and sales counter seem a bit generic. By comparison, the HP sets are rich in unique moments, and the Tree House is packed with the sort of details that enliven play.
This set WAS fun and challenging to build, and the exteriors of the buildings are each charming and complex—the exterior stairs on the townhouse were particularly interesting. But once my 7-yr old son and I finished building it, we found that the model airplane was one of the few bright spots for imagination.
