Great set
on November 2, 2016
Posted by: LEGOstarwarsguy12
Ever since I was young, I have always wanted the Lego death star, but the old one was so outdated that I never saved enough to get it. Once this one came out, I knew I had to get it. It doesn't deserve All the hate, just because it is $100 more. It has so many minifigs and big plates that are worth more than 10 cents per piece. I just wish it could have had a little more updates such as remodeling some of the interior. They could have put some grey pieces to put on the emperor's stairs, like the Death Star final duel set had. Also the trash compactor leaks pieces a lot. That's why I fixed those things!

Great set, gets a bad wrap because of high cost
on December 5, 2016

This set gets a bad wrap because of the high cost compared to last year's set (which retired early 2016), but otherwise it's a really robust Death Star with a ton of mini-figures, and all the playable areas of the set.
One "gotcha" that it took me a while to notice ... some of the parts seem to be overlooked in the step-by-step instructions. More than once, I moved to the next step, only to noticed that the previous step left out some of the parts. The only way that I was able to catch on, is that the "new/next" step visually showed parts that the previous step had not. This caused me to go back a handful of times to fill in the blanks on my own.
Because I do absolutely agree that this isn't exactly a UCS type of set, and more like a repurpose of last year's set with some minor tweaks, the price isn't exactly justified.
With all that being said, if you don't yet own a Death Star, pick one up. If you do own the previous model, pass on this one and be happy that you paid less.

I was only missing one piece!!! I love buliding Lego star wars sets, or and Lego set. First of all, I think you get a great money's worth. You can clearly see how much time went into desinging this set. Second, easy to buliding of you commit, lots of different pieces! Good set!

One of the Best LEGO Sets of All Time
on March 31, 2018

His set is the best of all time. It shows many different scenes from the Death Stars in episodes 4 through 6. I had to get a shelf that was 16" wide just because of the size and it is a great part of my room. It works as a great conversation starter too.

Amazing Set
on February 14, 2021

This set is the best one I have. Technically, it's my mom's but I convinced her to let me keep it. The design is just out of this world. (Literally) It didn't take too long, only because I begged to build it in every waking minute of the day I didn't have school. The builder did a phenomenal job. It is designed so intricately. For example Vader can fit in the Tie but not a pilot because the shape of the cockpit is literally molded around Vader's helmet. There are so many features and details. You can reenact half of A New Hope with it. Overall 10/10 would recommend.

Pretty good

I got this set as a gift, and wasn't disappointed, as I didn't have the previous set. The minfigs have greatly improved, and some extra features have been added, but I was disappointed by the extra 100 bucks compared to the last set due to the extra 200 pieces. It is fun to play with, and looks great on display, and is a must have for any Lego fans that don't own the previous one. Mine was missing around 10 pieces (minor pieces) that I had to replace from my collection, and I know others that have had the same problem. Overall I think it is a great set, but is very expensive, and I feel like they could have just done an update to the old set instead of calling it a re-release, and they could've used that UCS slot to release (or re-release) something fans really want *cough* UCS millenium falcon *cough* also I recommend the imperial trooper battlepack, because they contain the new storm troopers in the set, and who doesn't need more stormtroopers

very little improvement over retired 10188 set
on October 4, 2016

this set has barely any improvement over the retired set. it appears LEGO just redesigned a box and slapped a $100 premium on an old set. i am very disappointed at the lack of creativity here. i hope this is not a new face of lego/disney coop. as a collector i will not be keeping this one, its an abomination. had different scenes been incorporated in the similar doll house design it would have been a must have. as it currently stands this set is a waste of money for those that already have 10188.

I am sorry that you purchased a set that did not appeal to you. We tried really hard to make it clear that this set was a redesign and re-release of the original Death Star set 10188 and I am sorry that you were not aware of this.
Just as you and other builders were excited with the release of set 10188 in 2008 we are excited to be able to re-release this set to the next wave of young builders.
You are correct in noticing that there are subtle changes and a price increase. This has nothing to do with "a new face of LEGO/Disney coop" but many other factors including the rising cost of materials and cost of doing business.
I think we can all agree that every LEGO set has a purpose in the LEGO portfolio and we look forward to helping kids fulfill their dreams by offering this epic set once more.

He’s headed for that small moon!
on January 5, 2018

It does at times feel like a small moon! You really don’t get the scale of how big this one is until you’re about half way through, it widens and widens as you go. Such a lovely build, instructions are like you’re building a car, perfectly broken down and illustrated with some nice touches in there. Although doesn’t mean it’s an easy one, I’ve made a few mistakes along the way, and it takes a fair bit to resolve, trust me! But, to Lego’s credit, all the bits are there, well organised and numbered, it was a genuine pleasure and delight to build. Spent 2 days with nothing but music and this for company...flew by! Price wise, yes, it’s expensive...but then again, it’s a frigging Death Star! The gold standard of Star Wars Lego! And when you consider all the bits and all the time and effort that went into designing it...totally worth it. If you’re going to get hung up on the price, I would say get something a little cheaper, but if you can look past it and enjoy it for what it is, you won’t be disappointed. One slight thing I’m not a fan of, however, is it being one of the Ulimate Collector pieces...it’s not, I wouldn’t display it. It’s got plenty of play value if you like to play with your sets...but I think I’ll deconstruct in the next few days. Spend the time boxing it up nicely for a bank holiday weekend to enjoy again! Go on...treat yourself!
