Great Play at a Steep Price
on September 15, 2016
Posted by: TeeKay101
This set is a minor upgrade of the previous Death Star, with one of the biggest updates being in the form of updated minifigures. The set itself has incredible play value!
Display value is okay, but since the original set's release many years ago, lots of new parts and building techniques have been implemented, and things like the stair-stepping could have been minimized. Being able to remove modules would have helped with play a bit, too.
The major issue with this set is the price point. With fewer parts than the recently released Disney Castle, this set costs $200 CAD more. I'm aware that themes, other sets, and piece counts are not directly comparable, but this price point is still significantly higher than it seems like it should be.
Over the previous iteration of this set, factoring inflation and the new updates, this price point still doesn't seem to stick.
This set comes with a lot of minifigures, most of which are not exclusive to this set (or won't remain so). The parts aren't all that unique... lots of common grey and black. Nothing wrong with that, but again takes away from the justification of the price-point.
It's a wonderful set. It's just seems overpriced.
Side note: personally, I'd prefer if the UCS label was used for models that have more display value than visible play value. It seems like there's been a shift to brand all of the higher priced sets as UCS this year, and I wish there could be a shift back. Just one ultimate collector's opinion!
If you have the money, by all means, buy this set!

Perfect display and play piece

This set is amazing! It draws you in from every angle. It comes with a great selection of minifigs, and you can't help but add even more. Its fun to recreate scenes from A New Hope, and think of your own stories. There is loads of room in the hanger bay to include other ships, containers and figures. It is a robust and very well put together piece. It is easy to turn around but I would recommend placing it on a 'lazy Susan' (spinning plate) to make it even easier.
Quite a pricey set but you certainly get your monies worth in terms of qty of pieces, minifig selection, and sheer enjoyment it brings to continuously tinker with.

A Great Surprise Gift
on February 1, 2017

Received this as a great Christmas present from my parents (my mother gets a kick from shopping at toy stores for her adult son)! This kit is spectacular. I missed out on the last iteration and will not compare them as that serves little purpose. The build is challenging but the fun is kept the whole way. The instructions were very easy to follow and I especiallly liked the ease of distinguishing between light gray, dark gray, and black parts. Mini figs look very very nice and really complement the set. An extra imperial gunner or officer would be nice but I have plenty of extras. This set is big- really big. It is also very sturdy as my 3 year old son loves playing with it. I did take off the green laser parts from the main laser though! All in all this is a real deal considering what you get. A great play toy that really doesn't take up all that much space. Great mini figs and a fun build. If you missed out on the last version save up and get one or find a benevolent family member :).

A fun build

I've built several large builds so far and this one has to be one of if not my favorite builds so far. As a big Star Wars fan this set hit all the right points for me, between the build and the scenes it has to offer it was great. It is rather pricy but as a fan of both Lego and Star Wars to me it was worth it especially after it was finished. This set is massive after it's built the pictures do it no justice. The only real con for me on this set was the price point but as I said as a fan it made it worth it. For the most part the build wasn't to challenging but there were some points that did slow me down for a second. This set also came with the best instruction manual that I have seen in a lego set yet, it was very easy to understand. The manual is the largest one I have seen for a set before and is very well printed making it clear. I'm not much of one for doing reviews but this set was so good and has received some negative reviews from some focusing on the cost and not the whole picture that I felt I should write one.

The battle station is fully operational!!

I just finished building the ultimate collector’s series death star and it is totally awesome. One of my most favourite features are the detention block and the trash compactor.i like how the detention block has a little trap door leading right to the compactor and you can make han, luke, chewie and leia jump in. I also like how the stickers in the detention blocks hallway make it look longer. I also like the hangar bay too and how LEGO revised the diagona. My favourite minifigure is the black suited imperial officer and imperial navy troopers. I strongly recomend this set if you have enough money!!

Everyone is overreacting, Krennic delivered
on December 23, 2016

People are overreacting. Krennic made sure to deliver a Death Star, and he did. As soon as the pictures of 75159 and 75098 came out, the community ranted on these sets. This reaction will soon grow to the universal dislike of both sets. Both those sets had high price-per-piece ratios, yet 10236 had a higher ratio, and it was met with universal acclaim. 10236 even had fewer figures and fewer exclusive ones. 75159 upset a lot because many own 10188. For the regular customer, an improved remake with a slightly increased price tag is favourable over a discontinued set that is 2-3 times the price. After reading many of the reviews, it is clear that they’re reviewing the price tag, the UCS label, and the picture at the front. I never seen people do an instruction manual comparison, and prove the sets to be complete replicas. Many people enjoy the set, so it isn’t right to push the negative reaction. Now to the review. This model requires a clear table to make most of your play. Since this model is so heavy, it is important to carry it using both arms, and have it close to the floor. This model is not sturdy, and it cannot withstand falls. To show the amount of room, I took photos of the death star without the minifigures. Since the rooms are connected and have a lot of space, there is a lot of play value. To provide vehicle play value, we get a TIE advanced; the model’s wings come off too easily, and it cannot withstand pressure. Despite the space constraints, the throne room was captured well, and the railing has a more precise location. After comparing the building instructions, I found the sets to be structurally the same. In the old set, only grey bricks embed the plates, coloured bricks are ow embedded into the plates and several sections of the set feel more complete. The railings are more curved and complete. The racks and canisters have more pieces in their builds, and they look more detailed. The biggest improvement are the minifigures, and now they are up to today’s standards. You also get four more imperials. Tarkin has a more detailed torso and lighter hair than his Rebels counterpart. Leia’s torso, and Han’s hair were long overdue updates. We finally got them. The Death Star Troopers exclusive torso better match the films. The lieutenant and officer are recurring extras, and have unique torsos. All capes use crease-free fabric. Consoles have updated prints. The turbo laser has received a huge update, and the central laser is more secured. As someone who did not own 10188, the entire build process felt new to me. I just got into LEGO Star Wars when 10188 came out, and I was never able to afford it. By the time I could, I was disappointed with 10188’s minifigure selection. With 75159’s release, it worked out in the end. If you already own 10188, this set is probably not worth your time, money, and space. If you enjoy Star Wars and Rogue One, and you want your VIP points to go to good use, I highly recommend this set. I hope this helps. Merry Christmas and happy holidays

Firstly, this set was what I always wanted and now I have it!
The capes are made of silk and the figures are heavily detailed. Love grand moff Tarkin aswell.
The turbo lift was sleek and the trash compactor was my favourite part of the set because you get a dianoga in it!
I still prefer the 10188 Death Star and figures just because it is a classic set!
Have fun building!

Awesome build, so much detail for each level. The little finishing touches for some parts are just so simple but effective.
