This Set is great. We Need more collectible Trains. How about the Flying Scotsman, Union Pacific 844, Updated Santa Fe Super Chief maybe. I'd buy them all.

Top notch display model

A pleasure to construct and very worthy for adult interest but easily suitable for younger builders. Congrats to the lead designer. I was particularly pleased with the subtle brown color. The color choice has a natural "aged" patina appearance in natural light and plays down the normal shiny brick look. The details are very well done and tend to be quite authentic. It's a very solid and strong built construction. I appreciate the color coded parts that aid orientation. There was plenty of heart and soul in the design of the packaging and product. Directions were great as usual and the only caveat for me was the color contrasts in the manual we're a bit on the weak side. Other than that, good job Lego Team! Now I'm hoping for a circa 1800's logging industry Shay, geared steam locomotive, in the future.

Getting the most out of this amazing train

If you like Lego and you like trains you'll find this set is amazing. Probably the best train Lego has produced for adult builders.
HOWEVER, there are two problems with this set that can lead to great frustration. Fortunately both of them can be easily fixed.
1) If you are planning on motorizing this set, when you get to step 53 in the instructions, stop and read ahead 65 pages to where they give the instructions for motorizing the set. You will discover that you can save yourself from 15+ min of building an interior that you will subsequently remove to make room for the motor. (if you are not motorizing it right away, go ahead and build the interior)
2) At least one popular youtuber encountered a serious design flaw that causes the train to derail, especially when running on the old metal track (9v track, discontinued 14 years ago), but what he didn't realize is that the problem is easily fixed. I too had this problem. So first let me explain what the problem is- when two wheels on an axle go around a curve the inside wheel wants to go slower than the outside wheel. For a non-powered train axle having red traction bands on both wheels can cause problems because the "grip" causes the two wheels to fight each other and in this case even contributing to a derailment. The solution is to remove exactly one red traction band from each unpowered axle. Ideally you should remove the red band from the right side of the first axle and left side of the last axle, but it will probably work if you remove exactly one red band from a given unpowered axle. In recap, you want red traction bands on all of the motorized wheels so the train will move, and then for the non-motorized axles you only want one wheel with a red traction band per axle so that the rods will turn and then for the other wheel on that axle make sure that it does NOT have a red traction band so that it can slip on the curves (don't worry about the smaller wheels, those already spin independently).
Other tips- if you are only building this set for static display, you might want to slip a couple of brown 1x4 bricks and a 1x4 tile into the gaps between the cab and each hood. There are also some clever tricks using 1x4x1 panels for hiding this gap when running, but you'll need to search online for those.

The Little Engine That Could

I think I can, I think I can. Seen the movie?
The build was fairly easy and it's split in 4 bags, with bag 4 being the two end carts, bag 1 is the track and Bag 2,3 is the middle train.
There is a good amount of repetition. About 75% of the set, I would recommend building bag 4 simultaneously as that saves some frustration.
The set took 4-5 trys to order online, Kept crashing before finally going through. Glad I got it early. If you're a fan of trains, this is a good set for you. It's a nice display piece. Kinda funny looking too.

This is the first Lego Set I have gotten since 2013, and let me say that A: I have missed Lego so much, and B: This was an amazing set to return with. I am a huge fan of trains in general, and this model is incredibly detailed! I would love to see some new Lego train sets in the Creator Expert line, like the GNR class N2, or the A1 Peppercorn. Love it!

I was so happily surprised to see Lego reveal a new train set that my nostalgia overpowered me and I caved. No regrets! I haven't bought a Lego set in my adult life in over 15 years but this set was too good to miss! Combining my love of the older Lego train sets (like Santa Fe) with a beautifully designed 18+ expert box and display. Most of my Lego sets end up on a self so I appreciate the clean look and details of the Crocodile and classic display track. I loved the build and the final product looks very nice! Can't wait for more Train sets of this quality! Thanks to the Designer and Lego for giving me a nostalgia trip and a break from the realities of 2020 adulthood!
