Ok for display but lots of playability issues

Too many flaws add up to make the build and play with this set annoying and just not fun. There is an issue with the gearbox that I could never fully resolve. After many builds and re-builds to make sure I had everything right, the wheels still do not turn smoothly – there is always some gear grinding and catching (some posts on other Lego forums speculate that there may be a design/quality issue with the tan gears). Un-motorized, when I push the train on actual Lego track, the wheels in the main section often lock up and slide. The wheel sets on the front and back sections have also been problematic. When changing directions, they often seem to catch on something, get out of alignment, then lock up and slide along the track. Between all three components, more often than not, one is not working right. The price to buy the Powered Up components for the train is ridiculous. I can almost justify the cost of the hub since it includes all the “smarts” – but the additional cost of the Technic Large Motor is crazy. For both parts, it is basically the cost of the train itself. Out of sheer curiosity, I also tried using the significantly cheaper Powered Up Medium Linear Motor and noticed no difference in performance (maybe it matters more if you use the train to pull other railcars). My other gripe with the Powered Up components is that you have to use a smartphone and the Powered Up app to get the motor to function in any manner except start/stop (which is what you can do with the Powered Up remote). I still have old Lego 9v trains that run like they did when I bought them decades ago. That won’t be the same for anything that relies on a smartphone app.

Outstanding Build

Even though I own close to 1000 sets, this is my first review. As a train and a Lego enthusiast, I am just in awe at the superb design and expert quality that went into this design. I hope Lego continues to manufacture Expert sets with adults in mind. Because of my love of Lego, I hate to complain but I did have a problem with the build book. The colors up against the dark background were very difficult for me to see. Other than that, the whole set was perfect. I have this train displayed in my office with all my other builds.

Awesome Set! Easy to add matching passenger cars
on September 1, 2020

Lego designers really did a great job with this set. It looks incredible, it's really easy (but expensive) to add power functions to it, and it is actually a pretty accurate portrayal of an actual Crocodile Locomotive.
Two suggestions to make this set even better (for Lego or collectors)... first, close the gap between the middle part of the locomotive and the two end pieces with 1x2 slope pieces in reddish-brown. It's easy to do and doesn't require a lot of parts- but will make the set look much better. Second, add three 1x4 tile pieces in dark bluish gray to the pieces on top of the wheels on the front and back- that will prevent the train from derailing when taking corners at higher speeds.
Other than that- this set is really great. It looks good on the display stand or along regular track. I designed and built a few matching passenger train cars to this locomotive. I used the current passenger train #60197 as a guide for how to design the passenger cars, but used a 6x28 base instead of the 6x24 base that's used in #60197. The pieces aren't expensive and are widely available in dark bluish gray and reddish brown. Others have created matching passenger cars in dark green. Both options look great and really add some custom pizazz to this locomotive.
This set is sure to be a collector's item one day. All retired Creator Trains significantly increase in value over time- so if you are considering this train- buy it before Lego retires it. You won't regret your purchase.

Absolutely love it.

I got this Lego set as a Christmas gift and really enjoyed putting it together. It took me quite a while to assemble it, working on it a little bit at a time over a couple days. The only downside to this set is that the hub, motor and track for this engine are sold separate. I guess this is to keep the cost of the set itself affordable, since larger Lego sets do tend to be somewhat pricey.

Exceeded my expectations.

The crocodile locomotive is not only a very delightful display model, but also good for running along my railway. There are a lot of nice printed details, and the only sticker is a UCS style plaque. The set number on the side of the engine is a nice touch, and the locomotive can be easily motorized. The only thing that could be improved is that there is an innacurate gap between the ‘noses’ and the cab, and that it does derail somewhat frequently. But there are many videos online showing easy fixes for both. LEGO sets are quite pricey nowadays, but I feel like this was fairly priced. This will attract not only AFOLS like myself, but also train fans in general. 10/10

Looking forward to more!

A beautiful model that captures the look of the prototype. Great detail also that is only visible during the build process.
I hope Lego releases many more trains like this which are larger and more detailed than the standard Lego trains.

nice train, instructions need a little tweaking
on July 10, 2020

I like trains, so was happy to get this one. it was easy to build and looks cool.
however, the instructions could be improved a little. Like others have said, the black background looks cool, but makes it a little harder to see which pieces are being specified. P. 114 should be corrected to show that the top brown plates should be centered on the pieces below. As others have said, p. 52 should have a reference to p. 122 (or thereabouts) for installation of power. I figured something was missing and it's nice that it was set up to be easily disassembled, but it would have been helpful if they'd had a callout right there. The image on p. 126 showing how to offset the wheels should have been earlier (e.g., p. 124) so you don't have to look ahead or redo the wheels (this is minor, since it's just two pages, but still..). This might sound like nitpicking, but these changes can make it easier for less experienced builders.
