I like this machine but its first generation design needs some tweaking. First of all it brews a great pot of coffee. Uses a cone filter - a MUST. I brew as little as 4 cups and as much as 12. All consistently good. I like the 5-beeps tone that says "I'm done and ready." Also like the set to brew timer and the ability to set the warming tray stay hot time. (15 minutes for me. No burned coffee!) The K-cup side also works well - mostly. Single serve seems to be a little hotter than Keurig which is a plus. The choice of 6-8-10 oz. works for all tastes. Very happy.
But, here's the downside: Biggest flaw: The mechanism that pushes the K-cup down over the lower needle often creates a large hole on the top foil part and grounds spill out. Useless, waisted cup of coffee. And a mess. It depends on the manufacturer of the K-cup. Some make pretty tough plastic single-serve cups.
I have found that I now manually push the K-cup down on to the lower needle with two thumbs. It becomes flush with the holder and then I lower the handle where the upper needle pierces the foil top of the K-cup. This "workaround" works! Perfectly pierced K-cups that are then perfectly brewed. The carafe on the brew side catches and gathers water in little cracks, openings, and hollow handle areas when in the dishwasher. Before you use the carafe you have to shake it and dry it thoroughly to avoid water and "spitting" on the warming plate.
And this has happened more than once: you must be sure to press the filter basket into place until it "clicks" so the brewed coffee wil dispense into the carafe. It's easy to forget to do that when you first wake up. The coffee brews and collects in the filter basket until it overflows and grinds stream out - a big mess. NOt a good way to start the morning!
The machine should shut completely off, not just the warming plate, after a user-selected amount of time or built-in default shut off.
I offer the following solutions to Cuisinart: 1) Seal the crevices and openings on the carafe where water collects so it comes out of the dishwasher ready to brew without the dish towel first. 2) Put a mechanism/piece of plastic in the brewing lid that pushes and snaps the filter basket into place to avoid non-dispensing of the coffee into the carafe. 3) Create a larger ring over the K-cup that pushes it down along the rigid outside rim of the K-cup rather than the center foil so no matter how tough the plastic on the bottom of the K-cup is, the pressure exerted on the rim will be more than enough to pierce the bottom of the K-cup with the needle. That's what I now do by hand. 4) add a default and/or user selected turn off time. Save electricity and save the machine's heating element. Perhaps save a house fire when one goes off to work and leaves the machine "on" all day.
One more thing. When the machine was brand new I tried to open the K-cup side. It appeared that the silver metal accent was where it opened. I tried to pry it open there. Oops. I actually damaged the opening part a little. The opening was about an inch below the silver accent handle.
I am quite satisfied, and pretty fussy, but realize this first generation "combo" unit can use some minor twekas to make it 5-stars. Here's to generation 2!

I love love love my Cuisinart “12 Cup/Single” brewer!! I liked the other popular single cup brewer that I’ve used for many years but I wanted to make a good pot of coffee in the weekends when everyone is home. My counter space was limited so my choices were few. Cuisinart is a great brand name with exceptional products so my choice was easy. I told my husband that I wanted it for Christmas and he got it for me. It fits perfect in my space and We are very happy with it!

I got it as a Christmas gift but waited to use it until my kitchen was finished as it was getting remodeled. The water tank for the single serve side hasn’t worked well and keeps about 6 oz of water in it like the sensor doesn’t work. I would not purchase it again and was so excited to get it. What a disappointment. Wish I’d used it before the time was up to return it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
