Good for play, building part not for kids

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a neat set, especially for a bunch of kids who got into Pokemon because of the latest movie. The fact that its a block construction set is both a pro and a con, especially considering we received it for our 8 year-old who enjoys building with a different popular brand. The packaging is a really wasteful bummer that includes plastic. There's no upside to the way they packaged it because it isn't sized right and is not durable enough to store the toy in. It is not a solid box, but a cardboard wrap around a plastic tray with six sections, each of which contains a folded paper instruction page and two plastic bags filled with pieces. I thought the intent was for them to dump the pieces into the section while building and then store the finished characters when done but the sections are too deep to get the tiny pieces out of, even for small fingers, and they are too small to keep the finished toys in. They are sealed with plastic film like food packaging and the plastic bags are too thick for an 8 year-old to cut open easily. The actual construction is too difficult for an 8 year-old as well; although she really wanted to do it all by herself, they are all customized pieces and putting them together is not intuitive. She did one with a lot of help for about 15 minute and then let Dad do the rest, which took about five minutes each . Parents will appreciate that most of them fit together tightly so the finished models aren't always falling apart, but the trade off is that they are too hard for younger kids to snap together themselves. On the flip side, certain items, like some of the tails and Psyduck's head and bill won't stay together much at all; they use straight pegs to connect and they should have used a ball-and-socket construction method. All that aside, they were really excited to play with them as action figures. Its hard to find sets of Pokemon action figures this size, and these have moving parts and can be customized to some extent. Some of them have shooting projectiles and there is a 3-D cardboard soccer-like field that they enjoyed. My 4 year old serious Pokemon fan enjoys them the most and has played with them a lot; he likes that some of the pieces do come off, and modifies them accordingly, but can't get some of them back on. My six year old wanted to "build one", which actually consisted of watching Dad do it and putting on the tail. She made a story up with them using her imagination that was really neat. My eight year old isn't really into Pokemon, so she didn't play much. I think its a great toy for multiple ages once its built, but the construction portion of the toy isn't worth the investment unless they also have an interest in Pokemon.

Kids dove right in!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My kids, ages 9, 6, and 6 all dove right in to build the characters. They did it themselves with little help from me, only one of my 6 year olds asked for a little help at the end building his. This toy is good for boys and girls, my 9 year old girl loved it, as did my 6 year old twin boys. They played with the characters after they were built. Surprisingly there was no fighting over who got to build what character. But they did fight a little once they were built over wanting to use the other’s character. The kids loved it! Only downside was that a couple days later I found pieces on the floor. My kids are BAD with toys that have little parts. Even though we have a bin, they always end up on the floor. A negative for me as a Mom. A major positive is that Mom had some peace and quiet while my 3 children worked on building their Pokémon characters...and to me that is PRICELESS!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These were pretty simple to put together. My daughter enjoyed creating her own pokemon and then pretending to battle. We are a huge pokemon family so even my little ones were in awe of creating pokemon from little blocks.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My son was so excited to recieve this set. There are 6 figures to build. So we did them as a family. I must admit, we had fun building them. Although a couple had their slight challenges, we worked together to complete them. Once they were built the real fun began. My kids love the battles and just the characters themselves. This is a must have for any Pokémon fan.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We love this toy. It was so fun to put together. The colors are bright and the characters are detailed. We especially like that it has characters that are not as common. Your child will love it!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great building toy. My daughter loves to build as well as loves Pokémon so she is having a blast with this set. What is great is once you are done building you can continue to play with making these characters battle in the stadium. These are made great and put tot her without any issues. Perfect for any kid that likes to build and loves Pokémon.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this product free for my honest review. The mega construx pokemon trainer team challenge was a toy I can honestly see my 9 year olds playing with for quite a while. They were able to build the pokemon themselves, it took them a little while but they enjoyed it. Love that it comes with moving parts and a battle area. It seems to be well made and my kids like that they can make the actual pokemon or some new "pokemon" that they come up with.
