For my brother, George
on July 3, 2020
Posted by: Albisauce
Growing up, my brother George and I amassed a huge collection of toys. LEGO’s we’re always king. George was super into the old school pirate sets, I was never a fan. He ended up collecting each set released and they were always His Crown Jewels. He kept them through college, a stint in the military, marriage, and then passed them on to his children with pride. George passed away several years ago. When I first saw this set, it caused a surge of emotions to rise I had forgotten. It awoken my childhood and a new sense of joy. I bought 2 sets. I built one, which is now proudly displayed on my fire mantle. The other is George’s.

Bought For The Ship
on August 7, 2020

I have wanted a LEGO Pirate Ship for many years. I missed out on the older sets years ago and never really liked the POTC sets. When this set was released I wasn't sure I wanted it. I didn't really care about the shipwreck island theme. However, after looking at pics of the assembled ship, I thought I would take a chance and ordered it. Boy am I glad I did. I love this ship! Lots of detail inside and out. I am not a fan of the yellow min-figure heads, but since this is a nostalgia set, I understand why they were used. I also wish they had provided more cannons. A pirate ship with only 3 cannons?? Well, that won't do. So I purchased 5 additional cannon sets. I then rearranged the lower deck to accommodate the cannons. Now this thing looks like a pirate ship! I also purchased additional blue plates to make a nice ocean base. I used some of the island parts to make a small island with a treasure chest.

Pretty good set

This set is a disappointment at first due to the lack of interior access in ship form. Along with limited deck space for cannons and sailors. In the island form, the interior has limited access apart from the captains room, this is another disappointment. However, in conclusion the set itself was a fun build and used a variety of building techniques. The final product was slightly disappointing compared to the hype but overall very good.

Cool but really shouldn’t have been an ideas set

I was really excited once I saw that the Pirate Bay got accepted on LEGO ideas and was extremely disappointed that they used an idea as a tribute to a completely different set. Now I am unaware how they came up with the idea to have a throwback to the Black Seas Barracuda for this idea and I am definitely not informed enough to say that this was legos decision but I am unhappy with it nonetheless. The original Pirate Bay had so much detail and was a great base for the pirates. Here the actual bay is an afterthought and just uses various chunks of the ship. So the bay doesn’t have half as much attention as the original idea, so what about the ship that was so important to leave the original idea as an afterthought? Well in terms of a pirate ship it really isn’t that good. It honestly could have been one of the best LEGO pirate ships ever made but there was a horrible detail that ruins it all. And that is that the interior of the ship is the same as the bay interior. If you are unaware of what this means it means that the cannon flaps are still windows, that the interior is pretty much not accessible, and that you are left with nowhere to place your cannons (not even mentioning that the set is one cannon short of what it could hold [3/4 cannons]) The only place you can place them on the ship is on the deck and not the interior without customization. Now some may argue that this is the case with other LEGO ships that there is only one level with no deck. A good example of this is the LEGO black pearl. It doesn’t have a deck and you just place the cannons on the only level that is there. The difference is that that is where the cannons are supposed to go. They are behind the flaps and not just on the deck randomly. The interior of the ship in this set is just the interior from the bay build with the tavern and kitchen and so on. Not that you can get to it anyway. It somehow feels like the actual island is an afterthought and that the ship was an afterthought at the same time which I can’t really believe is possible. Altogether it is far from a bad set but doesn’t do anything really excellent.

Cool looking but not great play value
on January 17, 2021

I was attracted to this set because I really liked the way the ship came apart into a sort of wild beach playground. However, on building it, I discovered that the inside of the ship with all the detail is pretty closed off... you pretty much have to take it apart to access the inside. Not much of a playground if you can’t get inside to play. The outside is impressive, except for this one poorly design piece that falls off constantly. A bit disappointed in my purchase.

Fragile and frustrating
on January 10, 2022

This set was easily the least enjoyable build of several dozen sets built. The trees are incredibly fragile and a stiff breeze will break them. Also the two halves of the shipwreck display do not actually quite lineup.
